The league was founded by Conrad Totten, known as Connie. For a long time, Totten was interested in forming a baseball league in Valley Stream. Totten approached Watt Howe, who owned and was the editor of the "Valley Stream Mail". Watt undertook sponsorship of the teams, and offered advertising support in helping to form the league.
Meetings were held at Valley Stream Central High School and the clubhouse at Firemen's Field to organize the league.
The first game was played at Firemen's Field on June 10, 1943, and incumbent mayor Henry Hendrickson threw out the first ball.
The league formed with 10 teams in the beginning. The founding members of the league were local volunteer organizations who placed teams in the league over the years. There were teams from the VFW, American Legion, Kiwanis, Elks, Police Boys Club, St. Mary's (pictured above), Warriors, the Masons, and later, Blessed Sacrament and Gibson.
By 2007 the league evolved into one organization, the Valley Stream Baseball League, and a travel organization with teams from ages 9-19, the Valley Stream Colts and the Hawks.
The League went to went bats in 2013 in the 12u Jeter, 10u Wright, and 9u Rookie (Soon to be Rivera) Divisions. 2013 League registrations included discounts for Valbrook Baseball Camp, subscriptions to the VS Herald, and discounts at Beaver Bats in Oceanside.
-information for this history page provided by Richard Totten, whose grandfather, Conrad Totten, founded the league. Richard Totten played in the Mail League from 1948-55.

Colts and Hawks Travel Program
The Valley Stream Baseball League officially combined it's travel teams into one program beginning in 2007. In the past, different organizations created teams; BSAA Angels, Gibson Yankees, VSML Dodgers, VSML Gladiators and the Spartans. The origin of these team were all players who played the the VSBL.
Bob Inzerillo, with Rich DeAngelis and John Tufarelli, started the travel program for the youth of Valley Stream. In 2001 Mr. Inzerillo founded of the Valley Stream Hawks. He has agreed the be the director of the VSBL travel program. Mr. Inzerillo has tremendous knowledge of travel baseball. He is very aware of the different leagues and tournaments that the VSBL teams can compete in. We will be forming teams for ages ranging from 8yrs-18yrs old each season forward.
The name Colts was chosen for the new teams beginning in 2007 to join the already existing Hawks teams. New logos, uniforms and the www.coltsbaseball.com web site all made their debut in 2007 as part of this exciting adventure. The Hawks continue on as an alternate VSBL travel team name.
Please contact Bob Inzerillo at 516-492-5119, or Armando Hernandez if you are looking to become a part of VSBL Travel Baseball.
A look back to 2007......
Our new travel program proved to be a huge success in its inaugural season. That summer, Coach Inzerillo took his 18u to the FABL Open Division title in 2007 and Coach Rocchio's 18u team finished first in the Connie Mack West Division.
We had two 16U teams coached by Bruno/Corea/DeAngelis and Tufarelli/Breidenbach/Iadevaio. The Bruno team played in Connie Mack while the Tufarelli team took on the Babe Ruth League, winning the Nassau County Championship. Coach Tomaszewski coached our 14U group that played in the Connie Mack League Koufax division.
Our 12u Cooperstown team was headed by Chris Vesley and Mike Labeck. They took their Colts to AllStar Village in July.
Coach Bilello's brought his 13u team on board with the Colts, and they competed in the Babe Ruth League Rookie Division. They assembled the 12 year olds from their squad and went to Cooperstown Dreams Park in 2007.
The Colts 12u team was coached by Lee Bogner. The boys played 2007 in the NT Baseball League and won the Floral Park Memorial Day tournament. Coach Lee also took his group to Cooperstown in the Diamonds tournament.
Last but certianly not least, our 11u team was coached by Vito Frisca. Coach Friscia's team played NCYAA in '07 summer and later won the Fall NCYAA championship going 13-0.

2011 VSBL Annual Awards Dinner
Wearing custom championship T-shirts, players from the Valley Stream Baseball League’s top two teams were honored at the annual awards dinner last Saturday night at the VFW hall.
The Rays won the David Wright Division, for players ages 9 and 10, beating the Orioles 12-10 in the final game. They were coached by Jamie Lewin, Tom Marten and John Doncell.
“The kids really worked hard all year long,” Lewin said. “They love the game of baseball.” He added that the team is like “one big family,” and the children play very well together.
Capturing the Derek Jeter Division championship, for players ages 11 and 12, was the Marlins. In a rematch from last year, the Marlins beat its biggest rival, the Hawks, to win the division title. Coach Matt Roth, who has been leading the team for the past three years, said the players did what it took to win. “They practiced hard, played hard,” he said. “It’s been three years in the making.”
Players from both championship teams received trophies. Additionally, each child was given a T-shirt with the names of the players and coaches.
The Baseball League also recognized some of its top players and contributors. Darius Badger was named the Player of the Year from the Wright Division. The 10-year-old who attends Wheeler Avenue School played catcher for the Cubs this past season. He has been in the league for four years and said he always helps his teammates to become better ballplayers.
Patrick Loftus, 12, was the Player of the Year from the Jeter Division. He attends the Kellenberg Latin School and has been in the Baseball League for eight years. This past year, he played first base for the Angels.
He was recognized not only for his play on the field, but for his other contributions to the league. Patrick has helped with registration at Firemen’s Field and set up for the annual Opening Day festivities.
League President Bob Inzerillo described Darius and Patrick as two “very special kids.” He said the award goes to players who have good baseball skills, are good team players and show a dedication to the league.
Coach of the Year honors went to Nelson Martinez, who guided the Cubs this past season. The Man of the Year award actually went to several men, and women, who have made a difference. It was presented to the Valley Stream Parks Department, for the work its staff does to take care of the fields that the Baseball League uses, specifically at Firemen’s Field.
Accepting the award on behalf of the Parks Department was Frank Torres, a parks supervisor. John Tufarelli, a village trustee and former Baseball League president, praised the work of Torres and the parks staff. “The field where your kids play, they are pristine,” he said.
In addition to the awards ceremony, Inzerillo highlighted some events from the past year, including the first ever Firemen’s Classic Tournament. It featured teams from Valley Stream and other surrounding towns. He also said he is excited for next year, which will be the Baseball League’s 70th season.
