Wednesday, May 23Round 1 - USJ 4, Marshall Co 2Last year's Class AA baseball runner-up took its first step in reaching a third straight championship game. University School of Jackson defeated Marshall County in its BlueCross Spring Fling state baseball tournament opener to advance in the winner's bracket of the double-elimination tourney. Marshall County (28-13) will play at 10 a.m. today in an elimination game. USJ (38-5) will play afterward. USJ starting pitcher Clayton Gant's two-run double gave the Bruins a 2-1 lead. Will Glenn followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 3-1. Tennessee signee Josh Liles' sacrifice fly scored pinch runner Dusty Bright to give the Bruins a 4-1 lead. "We were trying to make him throw a lot of pitches because we knew he had thrown a lot last week," Liles said. "He pitched a good game. We just hit the ball when we needed it." Bright ran for starting second baseman Benjie Fesmire, who left the game when he caught a cleat to the face while stealing second. "He just scratched his head," USJ coach Brad Dyer said. "He wanted to go back in, but I wouldn't let him. He'll be alright for (today)." |
