Wednesday, May 2 USJ brings home 14-AA crown / By DAVID THOMAS dgthomas@jacksonsun.com In another rematch of last year's Class AA state title baseball game, University School of Jackson easily defeated Covington, 12-1, in five innings to win the District 14-AA tournament championship on Wednesday at USJ. The Bruins (34-5) play host to Dyersburg on Monday in the regional semifinals. Covington visits Dyer County. USJ came up with four runs in the first inning. University of Tennessee signee Josh Liles was hit by a pitch, Danny Grimm and Preston Overbey singled, and Clayton Gant hit a two-run single. John Wills, the tournament's most valuable player, then hit a double to score Overbey. Wills scored on a sacrifice fly by Will Glenn. "When we are ahead, we need to stay ahead," Wills said. "I saw the ball well and have been playing pretty good." Wills was 3-for-3 with two doubles and a single. "John (Wills) has been tearing the cover off the ball," USJ coach Brad Dyer said. That takes pressure off the top of USJ's batting order. "You can't pitch around (Josh) Liles and (Preston) Overbey because John (Wills) is carrying his weight," Dyer said. And Overbey, only a freshman, is getting it done on the mound. Overbey overpowered the Chargers in the four innings he pitched, allowing only one hit. Covington scored its only run in the second inning when Evan Gangaware singled, stole second and scored on a throwing error. "I'm more confident when I have the lead," Overbey said. "From the first inning, when we jumped out 4-0, I was confident." Overbey also figured in the game's best play in the top of the fourth inning. Gangaware hit a slow roller a few feet up the third-base line. Overbey sprinted to the ball, fielded it and made a perfect throw to first for the out. "It's the little things that matter," Dyer said. "You're not going to score 12 runs every game." Benji Fesmire pitched the fifth inning for the Bruins. He and Overbey combined threw only 51 pitches in the game. Only two Charger batters got the ball out of the infield. USJ had 11 hits and scored in every inning. "It's been a long week for us, but we have a chance to play Monday," Covington coach Geno Miller said. "USJ is great, but I'm proud of these kids." The defending Class AA state champion, Covington (15-20) lost nine seniors from last year's team. They started this season 2-9. "I knew Covington lost a lot of people, but we have a lot of young players who keep stepping up," said USJ's Liles, the district's regular-season MVP. "The veteran players need to lead." - David Thomas, 425-9637 |
