The Essex Hornets remain the Vermont Division One hockey champions. Tim Carpenter's goal at the 5:35 mark of the second overtime gave Essex the 1-0 win over the top seeded Rutland Raiders in the championship game on Monday night at the Gutterson Fieldhouse. Carpenter took a feed from defenseman Bryan Currier and fired a shot through the five hole on Rutland goaltender T. J. Bowse to end a titanic struggle between the defending champs and the unbeaten top seeds. Rutland carried the play through most of regulation and the first overtime, but Essex goaltender Mike Fogg held the fort, making 31 saves to pick up the shutout. Essex's superior depth was a big factor, as they out shot the tiring Raiders 8-1 in the second OT, culminating in Carpenter's winning goal. For Essex the title was their twelfth all time and their second in a row. They end the season at 17-6. For Rutland looking for their first Division One State title, the season ends at 20-1-2. We taped the Essex/Rutland championship game for broadcast Tuesday night at 7:00 pm on the Vermont Broadcast Sports Channel, channel 74 on Comcast Cable in Chittenden, Franklin and parts of Addison counties, as part of the Merchants Bank High School Hockey series.

Burr and Burton 3 Colchester 2
The Burr and Burton Bulldogs are the 2007 Vermont Division Two boys hockey champions. Chris Coppin put away the rebound of a Shane Daiek shot at the 3:13 mark of the second overtime on Thursday night at the Gutterson Fieldhouse, giving the Bulldogs a 3-2 win over the defending state champion Colchester Lakers. Burr and Burton dominated the game's first two periods getting second period goals from Trevor Pollock and Daiek to take a 2-0 lead after two. But the Lakers rallied on a Nick Kehaya powerplay goal and a Tyler Bouffard short handed goal to tie the game in the third. The Lakers had the better scoring chances in the overtime, but Bulldog goaltender Jake Griswold was solid in the nets and it was the Bulldogs who got the goal that counted, nailing down their second hockey state championship. They finished the year at 18-3-2. Colchester finishes up at 19-3-1. We taped the Colchester/Burr and Burton state championship game for broadcast on Saturday afternoon on the Vermont Broadcast Sports Channel, channel 74 on Comcast Cable in Chittenden, Franklin and parts of Addison counties as part of the Merchants Bank High School Hockey series. It will air immediately following the two Division One Semi-Final games, with air time set for just after 4:00 pm on Saturday afternoon.
