Plano West hockey team captures Texas Cup
Goalies have their say, then Lewin's OT goal beats Highland Park
04:15 AM CDT on Monday, April 25, 2005
By MONIQUE WALKER / The Dallas Morning News
FRISCO Senior Jeff Lewin scored in overtime to lead Plano West to a 1-0 victory against Highland Park to win the Texas Cup state high school hockey tournament Sunday at the Dr Pepper StarCenter.
Plano West senior Mark Adams sent a pass in front of the net to Lewin. The puck tipped off of goaltender Jack Boeing's glove and trickled in for the victory 11 minutes into the sudden-death overtime.
Plano West (21-8-3) won the state title last year, but the Texas Amateur Hockey Association stripped it of the title after an investigation ruled that the school played with two academically ineligible players.

Plano West coach Cosmo Clarke said he and his staff took every precaution to make sure there were no problems this season.
"We've been harping on grades all year to make sure everything was in order," Clarke said. "We double-checked and triple-checked, and we knew we were in good standing."
Sunday's game was dominated by solid goaltending on both sides. Boeing stopped 24 of 25 shots, while Plano West's Ryan Merkow stopped 16.
Highland Park (22-8-1) was led by 10 seniors who carried the team to its first state championship game in the program's six years.
Jesuit 9, Keller 3: Austin Smith scored four goals, and P.J. Tatum added a hat trick in Jesuit's win in the third-place game. The two combined for seven Jesuit goals and four assists.
The Woodlands 4, Houston Clear Lake 3: Michael Kalinowski scored an unassisted goal in overtime to give The Woodlands a victory in the fifth-place game.
Odessa 5, Round Rock 3: Cully Reid and Chase Hughes each scored twice to lead Odessa in the seventh-place game. It was Odessa's first win of the tournament.

2005 Northern Virginia High School Hockey League
Virginia Championships End in a Tie
Then, as happened to the Rams in their season-opener with Westfield, something clicked and the puck started sliding the other way.
With 4:58 left in the second, Bobby Freese scored from Wiggings and Schleibaum. Sean Hoefke scored his first of two goals just 2:06 later to put the Rams within one. The teams skated to the locker room with North Stafford still in the lead at 3-2.
Then the third period happened. Hoefke, who had only three-career NVSHL regular-season goals and only scored twice this past regular season, scored his second of the game on an assist with Ryan Ramirez at the 2:52 mark of the third to tie the game.
Robinsons faithful, whod been in disbelief early, were then sent into a frenzy when Pat Byrnes scored a power-play goal with 3:26 left in the third to put Robinson ahead, 4-3. The comeback showed some of the same signs as Robinsons 6-4, season-opening win over Westfield when the Rams trailed 4-0 in the second period to come back in the second half of the game and win.
North Stafford head coach Peter Cizdziel called his timeout right after the goal to settle his troops and get their heads back into the game. It worked and the strategy was set to pull Burke in favor of a sixth attacker should the need arise.
With Burke out of the net in the last minute, Robinson settled back on defense until Schleibaum was able to pick the puck up in the neutral zone and skate toward the empty goal where he was met by some North Stafford resistance. Instead of just dumping the puck toward the goal from the blue line, Schleibaum tried to get closer to the goal and wound up coughing up the puck.
Between periods, the All-NVSHL First Team and All-NVSHL Rookie Team were announced. The first-team all NVSHL had Burke in goal, Brad Surdam (West Springfield) and Billy Day (Madison/Marshall) on defense with Schleibaum, Jeff Cizdziel and Robert Bushman (Forest Park) as the forwards. Schleibaum was selected as the 2004-2005 NVSHL Player of the Year.
The All-Rookie Team consisted of Cullen in goal, Ken Bickel (Langley) and Sean Hoppe (West Springfield) on defense with Mike Romero (Forest Park), Kevin Durkin (Potomac Falls) and Craig Kitto (Stone Bridge) as the forwards. Cullen was selected as the NVSHL Rookie of the Year.
The NVSHL Scholarship winner was Osbourns Doug Zabransky who will receive $2,000 toward his college education.
Prior to the game a $500 check was presented to a member of Special Hockey Washington and a $1,000 check was presented to the family of Jason Resto from the NVSHL. A matching check for $1,000 to the Resto family was also presented by the Ashburn Ice House.
