All Star News

Saturday July 13th, the Upland Green team took two big games in the Redlands' Sectional tournament.  Upland got a walk-over-forfeit versus High Desert Spartans and then spanked the Pony team from Nuevo 24 to 1. The Giants' Shawn Hernandez, the Dodgers' Davy Hartman, and the Pirates' Justin Upchurch led the U's hit parade, as each one reached base 4 times and contributed 3 rbis in the blow out.  But it was the Orioles' Alex Mancia who got the Green going in the first with a 2 rbi single. Shawn Hernandez got the win.  Shawn Hernandez got the win going three innings, while the Reds' Mike McCarthy and the Giants' Michael Gutierrez cleaned up, going an inning each in the rout.  The 14 Green team and Dodgers' Manager Dave Hartman, speaking about his boys said, 'He was proud of the way they handled themselves'.

Next up, the Green team plays Redlands' Red team for the Sectional Championship, Sunday July 14th at 2 pm.  If they can manage one more win, either in the winner's bracket championship or the elimination round championship, they will join the Upland 14 Black team in Regionals.  Good luck Green!

And Then There Were Two…

Upland’s two Pony 13 year old teams went out in similar fashion.  The 13 Green team was eliminated at the Orangecrest Sectionals after compiling a 1-2 record (3-4 overall).   Our thanks go out to Bill Flores and his coaching staff for an admirable job in representing Upland Pony.

The 13 White team was dismissed in Upland’s own Regional tournament.  Upland got off to a great start with a victory but then lost the next two.  The 13 White team was also 3-4 overall in their two tournament entries.  Thanks to Louie Pro and his staff for coaching our boys in their first Pony tournaments.  We’ll be expecting big things out of these teams next year.

Upland’s 14 Green team got their first taste of Pony tournament baseball at the Redlands District invitational (Win or lose you advance to Sectionals).  They were winless in their two games but battled hard and lost a heartbreaker in the elimination round, 14 to 13 to Redland’s Blue team.  The boys will be back out there this weekend at Redland’s Sectional tournament.  The Green team coached by Dave Hartman will play at noon on Saturday July 13th and if they win play again at 5:00 pm later that evening.  If they lose they will play at 9 am Sunday July 14th.  Good luck guys!  Everyone from Upland will be pulling for you.

Upland’s 14 Black team are Orangecrest District champions.  The Black team went a perfect 4 and oh, winning the first 3 rather handily while coming from behind in the fourth one (the District Championship Game).  The boys’ win gave them a bye to the Regional tournament in Moreno Valley and some much needed rest this week.

Recapping their games…

Game #1, Black won 14-2 over Orangecrest.  Red Sox’ Ryan Phelps was the winning pitcher.  Fellow Red Sox’ Gene Fabela and Elijah Aragon, along with the Pirates’ Nick Salinas each had two hits and a double.

Game #2, Black won 8-4 over High Desert Silverback.  Marlins’ Nate Kittilson was the winning pitcher.  Gene Fabela, Ryan Phelps, and Nate Kittilson each had two hits to help get the win.

Game #3, Black won 12-1 over Corona White.  Ryan Phelps got his second win of the tournament in the game.  Nate Kittilson added 3 hits, while the fellow Marlins’ Ryan Almandinger and Alex Steel, along with Gene Fabela pitched in with two hits.  Gene Fabela added 5 rbis in the game and also had Upland’s first home run of the tourney.

Game #4, Black won 8-6 over Corona White.  Orioles’ Corey Lemus got his first win despite getting a little roughed up.  Even without his best stuff, Corey gutted it out and helped send Upland onto the Regionals.  Black trailed 6-4 after 4 innings before putting away the pesky Corona team.  Nick Salinas and Ryan Almandinger had two hits but it was the ninth batter who really came through for the ‘U’.  The Orioles’ Adrian Alvarez was perfect at the plate with 3 walks and a triple but most importantly 2 runs scored to help Upland advance.

The win brought another District banner home to Upland.  Great job boys!

 **********************************************************************************************************

Day Two of Upland's 13 year old District Tournament found Upland's Green gaining a split.   In game one, Upland's Green ran into a buzz saw in the form of Jurupa' Pony.  Against a team filled with travel ball players, Upland went down to their first All Star defeat 8 to 1.  The loss caused them to drop into the loser's bracket where later in the day they met up with Moreno Valley's 13 year old All Stars.  The Upland Green's rebounded nicely and stayed alive with a 5 to zip shut out.  Their next game is Monday at 4:45. GO GREEN!

                                  *****

Game #1 is in the books and Upland 13 Green is victorious.  The Boys of Green (actually white with a little green highlighting on their jerseys) won on Saturday 6 to 5 over Chino Hills.  Nate Dawoodi was the winning pitcher going 3 innings and Donovan Smith got the save.  Donnie struck out the last two batters in the top half of the last inning with the tying run at second and winning run at first to preserve the win.  Ethan Manning got the big hit, a base loaded single which plated 2 and got Upland their first runs.  Good luck tomorrow versus Jurupa which won their first game 3 zip over Orangecrest.

Congratulations To Don Sullivan, Cody Ponce, Michael Montalvo And Charlie Reynoso!

Don Joseph Sullivan, Cody Ponce, and Michael Montalvo were former players with Upland Pony and Charlie Reynoso was our Pony League's previous President.  All were named to the 2012 High School Senior All Star game. Don will be playing for the North squad against Cody and Michael on the South squad. Charlie will be coaching the South.  Don (Tigers) was a standout pitcher at Upland High School this year and hasn't decided where he'll attend college. Cody (Giants) and Michael (Dodgers) played for Damien High School. Charlie is a coach at Don Lugo High School.  Another standout at Upland and former player for Upland Pony, Daniel Robertson (Marlins) turned down an invite to play in the game due his contract with the Oakland A's.  Daniel was the 34th pick in the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft.  Daniel played shortstop and third base for Upland High.

Note: The game was won by the South 7 to 3, with Cody Ponce using a 93 mph fastball to strike out the last batter for the win.
