The San Diego United Futbol Club Jr. Stars begins practicing Tuesday July 20th. All players will be trained by Academy Director Charlie Cleaves. Charlie holds a USSF "B" License and has coached in East County since 1996 with ECSA, ASC, Hotspurs, and Steele Canyon High School since it's inception in 2000. Besides the youth level, Charlie has been involved with the USL W League as a Coach, General Manager and Consultant.
The San Diego United Futbol Jr, Stars Program is Recreation Soccer at its finest and a great introduction to the game of soccer. Our Program for U5 through U8 players focus’ on small teams and small sided games to ensure that every player participates fully in the game, touches the ball frequently, and learns basic skills in the process. The teams are organized weekly to maximize the best opportunity to succeed for each player. At the Recreation level, no team standings are kept and keeping score in the game is discouraged.
The United Jr. Stars Program is committed to:
-Encouraging a healthy attitude toward sports and good sportsmanship at all times.
-Providing a FUN and rewarding soccer experience for players and parents.
-Giving each player the opportunity to develop at their own pace.
-Ensuring that each child is participating and has an equal amount of playing time.
The Philosophy and Goals are:
I wanted to explain it to all of you, because, especially if you have older kids etc. the idea of our program might be confusing. Here are the goals and philosophy for what is best for your children. They can and should play fun activities that just by chance have a soccer ball as basically a toy to explore as they discover what their bodies can do and are capable of doing. The concept of a tactical team approach is really an adult thing for parent satisfaction and has nothing to do with what is important for the development of U8 and below players. The word “team” for this age is a group of kids that are having fun and their biggest team tactical plan is a great United cheer! Training at U-8 and below should strictly be about the ball and the player. Shooting and passing should not even be trained and is really not necessary until at the older ages. Goals are not important, goal keepers are never to be used. Games should never be real games, or more then 3v3 and the field never bigger then 30x20. The ball should be a size 3 and nothing larger up to U-8. Practices should never be more then 45-55 minutes with a ton of water breaks, with playtime in 10 minute increments. U-8 and below is about the ball and building a foundation of foot skills, with a ball at their feet always, being encouraged to dribble, dribble and more dribbling.. Hearing coaches and parents at this age yell “pass the ball” is horrible! We want to encourage dribbling! Great dribblers with amazing foot skills that can control the ball with every part of both of their feet!
Basically, imagine a karate class and that’s what the San Diego United Futbol Jr. Stars is. I open the door at 4:00pmand close at 7:00pm. Players are encouraged to come to their designated times, but if they miss their time, they are welcome to join another session, because like karate, it is individual technical training with the ball and fun!
That’s it. Any questions, or issues, please just ask…
