Frequently Asked Questions
What competitions does the UMD Dance Team participate in? We compete at many in state competitions at the collegiate level. We go to Universal Dance Association Spirit of America regional competition at the Mall of America and National Dance Association national competition in Daytona Beach, Florida.
Is the UMD Dance Team in the Athletic Department? We are currently not considered a UMD athletic however, we are considered a club sport and are in the company of other sports such as rugby and lacrosse. We are working on re-instating our athletic department status.
Is the UMD Dance Team run by a coach or the captains? As of now, the UMD Dance Team is run by the captains and team members. We do not receive funding for a coach. Each team member is expected to contribute to the aspects of the team usually controlled by the coach. This experience is usually new to everyone; however, it is a positive one.
How is the UMD Dance Team funded? The UMD Dance Team receives minimal funding from the University of Minnesota and so we rely on private fundraisers to raise money for team expenses. Some of the fundraisers that we do are holding mini clinics for young dancers, bagging groceries, sending out sponsor letters, holding our annual dance show, and selling Krispy Kreme donuts.
How much does it cost to be a member of the UMD Dance Team? We make it our goal every year to earn enough money from fundraisers to cover all costs. However, we usually fall a little short and dancers are usually responsible for their individual team apparel (warm ups, sweatshirt), dance attire (shoes, tights) and their plane ticket to Daytona Beach, Florida. Last year no dancer spent more than $500 on being a member of the team. And if you think about it, you get a bunch of new clothes and a week long vacation in Florida with your friends for less than $500. Not a bad deal!
