REPORT:

The Carrickfergus Knights moved to 2-0 in their quest to get back to the Shamrock Bowl with a comprehensive victory over the UL Vikings in Carrickfergus. The Knights scored on their opening possession. After driving downfield, quarterback Stephen McDowell threw a perfect pass to receiver Paul McKillop. McDowell converted the extra point. The Vikings bad start continued on their next possession when they were forced to punt. Knights returner Chris Davidson fielded the punt inside his own 10 yard line and scored a spectacular 90 yard return. Knights linebacker Mark Harris picked off Vikings quarterback Liam Ryan in the Vikings half mid way through the second quarter. After gaining a first down, the Knights increased their lead to 20-0 with a 17 yard touchdown pass from McDowell to receiver Ian McIlroy. The Vikings managed to drive downfield on their next possession and get a first and goal, but Ryan was picked off again - this time by Spencer McDowell - close to the Knights goal line.

The Knights opened the second half in much the same way as the first when running back David Wright scored a 55 yard touchdown run. However, the Vikings, this time with Adam Culvertey at quarterback, began to move the ball. A couple of receptions by receiver John O'Flaherty put them deep in the Knights half and Damien Laffan scored their only touchdown on an 11 yard pass from Culvertey. The Vikings decided to risk an onside kick on the ensuing kick-off which Kieran Stack recovered on behalf of the Vikings. However, they failed to convert the possession into a score and after failing to convert a fourth down the Knights regained the ball and quickly scored, with David Wright getting his second - this time a 35 yard run. The Vikings fumbled on the kick-off return to give the Knights the ball in scoring range and Bobby Murray stretched their lead with a 4 yard touchdown run. The Knights sealed the 47-7 victory with a late 6 yard touchdown run by running back Andrew Crawford. The Knights now move to 2-0 and the Vikings fall to 0-7.

Thu 4/8/04 12pm ADMIRALS WIN FLOODLIGHT GAME UL VIKINGS 0- 13 CORK ADMIRALS

8 April 2004

Venue: UL Sports Grounds.

SCORERS (all Admirals):

1st Quarter: Keith O'Callaghan 36yd run, Iain O'Callaghan 1xpt (0-7).
2nd Quarter: David Lomasney 8yd pass from John Kenny (0-13).
3rd Quarter: No scoring.
4th Quarter: No scoring.

The Cork Admirals beat the UL Vikings 13-0 in the IAFLs first ever game under floodlights on Thursday night. The game, which is was rescheduled from last month due to flooding, was played at UL Sports Ground as a night game with an 8pm kick-off. Conditions were very difficult and constant driving rain made the field very slippy and heavy and ball handling very difficult. However, both teams coped well and put on a show for the spectators who braved the weather. The Admirals scored early in the first quarter. They received the ball deep in their own half dand moved the ball through a combination of running backs Sam Kidd, Keith O'Callaghan and Jari Kinnunen. Keith O'Callaghan broke free on a sweep to score their first touchdown from 36 yards out. Iain O'Callaghan kicked the extra point. The remainder of the first helf was close with both teams having scoring chances. The Vikings missed 2 field goals including a narrow miss from 44 yard out. In the second quarter, Cork again got into socring range and John Kenny connected with tight end David Lomasney for an 8 yard touchdown pass to make the score 13-0 at half time.

Both defenses dominated in the second half. Adam Culvertey, Sean Walsh and Justin Flood played well for the Vikings and Alan O'Carroll, Chris Gaughan and Trevor O'Connell led the Admirals on defense. The Admirals had at least two clear chances which they failed to covert into scores. Vikings defensive lineman Sean Walsh recovered an Admirals fumble on 4th and goal to prevent one possible touchdown and the Admirals also failed to score when they attempted a to throw a touchdown pass from a fake field goal try. The Vikings best scoring chance came in the fourth quarter, but they were stopped when Cork defensive back Barry Rafferty intercepted a pass on the 5 yard line. Like the Dragons, the Admirals are now 2-0 for the first time in their history.

4 April 2004

Venue: Greystones RFC, Wicklow.

SCORERS (all Rebels):

1st Quarter: No scoring.
2nd Quarter: Brian Dennehy 28yd run (0-6); Simon Mackey 15yd run, Brian Dennehy 2xpt (0-14).
3rd Quarter: Fearghal O'Donnchu 34yd pass from Andy Dennehy (0-20); Conor Ryan 9yd run; Brian Dennehy 2xpt (0-28).

Reigning National Champions, Dublin Rebels started their 2004 season with a comprehensive 50-0 defeat of the UL Vikings at Greystones RFC. The first quarter was quite an even affair with neither team moving the ball effectively. The only play of note was an interception of Vikings quarterback Ryan Calvertey by Rebels cornerback Darragh Farrell. Calvertey was making his first start of the season in place of Ben Lanser who's expected to return for the Vikings next game. Patrick Ryan also missed a 44yard field goal for the Vikings. In the second quarter, the Rebels ground game began to get going and Shamrock Bowl XVII MVP Brian Dennehy scored their first touchdown - a 28yd off-tackle run. The Rebels defense, led by DT Alan Kelly stopped the Vikings on their next possession. Rebels TE/FB, Simon Mackey scored their second touchdown, when he broke free on a 4th and 1 play to covert it into a 15yd touchdown. The Vikings got a first and goal due to a pass interception penalty by the Rebels on a hail-mary pass on the last play of the half, but failed to convert it into a score.

The Rebels came out strong in the third quarter and dominated on defense. DT Alan Kelly and Linebackers Sean Shanahan and Ken Hudson helped shut down the Vikings running game. Their running game also picked up with Brian Dennehy and Mark Kelly getting numerous first downs. TE Fearghal O'Donnchu scored the Rebels 3rd touchdown on a 34 yard reception form QB Andy Dennehy. The Rebels continued to dominate and quickly scored again with a 9-yard reverse run by receiver Conor Ryan. The Vikings were forced to go to the air in the fourth quarter to try and chase the game. They had some success with Calvertey completing passes to Patrick Ryan, Adam Culvertey and Gavin Grace. However, in spite of picking up some first downs, they failed to score. The Rebels began to move the ball with ease on offense as the Vikings tried to chase the game and scored a couple of quick touchdowns - a 13 yard pass from Andy Dennehy to Simon Mackey and a 4yard pass from Dennehy to receiver Chris Massman. Darragh Farrell recovered a muffed kick-off return after the Massman touchdown and the Rebels quickly made it 50-0 with a 46yard run by Brian Dennehy. Greystones Rugby Club
Sun 3/28/04 12pm DUBLIN DRAGONS DEFEAT VIKINGS IN LIMERICK

28 March 2004

SCORERS:
1st Quarter: UL: James Chandler 29yd pass from Ben Lanser (0-6).
2nd Quarter: DUB: Robert Popciobotartepelus, 21yd pass from Rob Olwill (6-6); UL: Patrick Ryan 21yd FG (6-9).
3rd Quarter: DUB: Dave Wheeler 2yd run (12-9).
4th Quarter: DUB: Matt Quinn 31yd run (18-9).

The Dublin Dragons got off to a 2-0 start for the first time in their history thanks to a 18-9 victory over the UL Vikings in Limerick. Both offenses looked strong in the first half. The Dragons moved the ball into scoring range on their first possession, but missed a short field goal. The Vikings then took an early lead; in almost an identical manner to the game between these two teams earlier this month; with a 29 yard pass from QB Ben Lanser to receiver James Chandler. The Dragons responded quickly in the second quarter and made the score 6-6 with a 21 yard pass from QB Rob Olwill to receiver Robert Popciobotartepelus. However, the Vikings fought back and regained the lead before half time with a 21 yard field goal from Patrick Ryan.

The Dragons ground game began to pick up momentum in the second half. They got into the red zone thanks to a 25 yard run from Chris Gambino, but failed to convert a 4th and 4 to turn the ball over to the Vikings. Two plays later, a Vikings fumble was recovered by Dragons linebacker Lez Connolly to give the Dragons a first and goal which was converted into a score with a 2 yard touchdown run by Dave Wheeler. Connolly and Dragons safety Franck Hupke were instrumental in giving the Dragons defense the edge during the second half. The Dragons sealed their victory in the fourth quarter when back-up QB Matt Quinn, filling in for Olwill, scored on a 31 yard quarterback sneak to make the final score 18-9 to the Dublin Dragons. The Dragons running game was particularly strong with Dave Wheeler going over 100 yards. Newly signed Texan running back, Chris Gambino also contributed over 70 yards from 10 carries on his debut game in the IAFL.
