The final regular season game of the 2009 IAFL season features the UL Vikings against the West Dublin Rhinos. The game takes place on July 5th, kick off at 2pm in St. Munchins College Corbally. The change of venue is due to the Irish Corporate games being hosted in UL that weekend so St. Munchins kindly offered us use of their pitch. Both sides have past pupils of the sporting school on their rosters with Liam Ryan, Glen Carr and Pat O'Kane on the Vikings roster and Chris "Mr. Snuggles" Moloney, a former Viking and a current Rhino.
The game promises to be an entertaining affair with both sides full of young, talented players. On the Vikings side the players to look out for are the four headed hydra in the backfield, Adrian Garvey, James Twomey, Colm Cronin and Liam Ryan. Each one of these players is a breakaway threat on every play. With the Vikings strong O-line and great blocking recievers expect plenty of yards for each of these players.
On defense the front seven is the strength with John Mullen, Bill Parkinson, Dermot Moriarty and Brendan McCarthy showcasing speed, strength, size and aggression. Kieran Coen, Jorge Gutierrez Rubio and Glen Carr give the defence headaches on which man or men to double team.
The Vikings realise that this game may make the difference between a road trip to the North for a semi final or a homefield game. Therefore it is a must win game.
The Rhinos have had a decent season in 2009. They picked up an draw against DCU early in the season and have run a number of playoff teams close. They need to find that killer instinct to find the end zone and put away teams. The Rhinos will enter this game understandably as underdogs but will hope to upset the Vikings who may already have one eye on the playoffs.
The Rhinos team is full of solid football players with Stephen Macken a QB to watch for the future. Chris Moloney is a good lineman with solid technique and a mean streak. Sean Power can line up at reciever or running back and is an athletic threat from either position. Dan Breslin is the standout in a solid secondary that also includes Ciaran Cusack and Nick Newby is a grizzled veteran who will lead a defence from the front. All in all the Rhinos will have to perform at a high level to compete with the Vikings but the talent and desire is there. Both sides are looking forward to a tough clean game. July 5th 2pm, dont miss it!
