Vikings edge the Knights in an epic win
The Vikings travelled up North for a big game that was crucial to secure playoff football and the possibility of a home semi final. The game was played in fantastic weather and in a great spirit. The Vikings started quickly with Brendan McCarthy ripping off an excellent return from the opening kickoff. The Vikes moved the ball on the ground with Adrian Garvey and got into the redzone. The Carrick D then tightened up and forced the Vikings to kick a field goal. Keith Fitzgerald did the business to put the Vikings ahead. Carrick got the ball and drove up the pitch, Darragh O'Callaghan picked the Knights QB Adam Devenny after some excellent running by Scott Carson. Carson was a threat during the whole match, breaking tackles and gaining yardage.
The Vikings continued to drive the ball well against the Carrick D but struggled to punch the ball in from the redzone. Fitzgerald kicked another field goal and had a third blocked. Then Carrick struck back with a long drive that resulted in a TD to put them up by a point. In the third quarter DT Glen Carr managed to bring Carson down in the endzone for a safety after a punt was downed on the 1 yard line. This put the Vikings up 8-7 but Carrick always looked threatening. Fitzgerald nailed another field goal after continued pressure on the Carrick goal line. Then after a great drive Carson ripped off an amazing run, breaking 5 Vikings tackles to get the ball in the endzone for the go ahead score putting Carrick up 14-11. The Vikings had to dig deep then and QB JP Nerbun produced the play of the game with a 45 yard long bomb on a 4th and long with time running down. WR Liam Ryan managed to get under the massive pass and hauled it in in the endzone to edge the Vikings ahead. The last minute was spent in a tense struggle where the Vikings D took a bend but not break approach. They managed to close the game out to get the big W and guarantee playoff football again for the Vikes this season.
