Brief Viking History
UL Vikings AFC was founded in the spring of 1999. From these early days of "Turkey Bowl" type football played amoungst the membership, the club progressed in Flag Football, with victories over DCU and Drimnagh Cycos. Through hard work by the management commitee and team of the day UL Vikings organised a Kitted team and entered the Irish American Football League winter league 2001. It was a baptism of fire but we played hard and showed steady improvement so by our fifth game we recorded our first victory with touchdowns by Tommy "Fumbles" Conneelly and Paddy "The Saint" Ryan, forever to be remembered in club history. In 2001, the Vikings won the league with impressive displays against all opposition but they lost the Shamrock Bowl to the Carrickfergus Knights. The Vikings then went through a transition period during which there was a complete turnover in players. The 2004 season was a rebuilding one where many of our players gained valuable experience which was put to good use in the previous 2005 season where we missed out on a playoff spot narrowly. In 2006 the Vikings had their first winning season since 2002 going (5-3-1). They beat the highly fancied Carrickfergus Knights in the semi-final but lost out to an experienced Dublin Rebels unit in the Shamrock Bowl final. The core of that team is still in place and is aiming to go all the way in 2007.
