Safety / Weather Issues

Weather Related Issues

You and your child’s safety are at the top of our list, whether it be playing field conditions or the weather.

Hot Line Info – Games Cancelled?  We try to get a message on the Hot Line at least one-and-a-half hours (1:30) before game time on days when the weather is in question.  If possible, we will make a later update to this message.  We try to base our decisions on what is known: current conditions at Hilti Park, radar, etc.  However, we do not try to speculate what might happen.  At times, we will tell you that the decision will be made at the fields at game time.  We always regret the inconvenience, should it occur, of having you get to Hilti Park only to be told that the games will be cancelled.

It can also be confusing to have games cancelled when the sun is shining.  However, that has occurred in the past due to the amount of rain received and the saturation of the fields.  It takes time, heat, and wind to dry muddy and wet fields.

Lightning and Rain  During times of inclement weather, officials with Union Kids Baseball are in contact with radar, television, and radio reports.  We are also equipped with a portable Lightning Detector.  This device will detect lightning activity within 40 miles.  We can also gauge whether the activity is moving towards our location or away from us.  As a rule, once we have lightning detected in the vicinity (usually within a 3-8 mile range) we will suspend games.  If the lightning activity clears, then we will resume games, otherwise games will be called off and completed on another date.

Tornado Sirens  Should the tornado sirens go off during our games at our location, those games in progress will be immediately suspended.  Games will be called off for the remainder of the day (if the sirens go off during the 6 pm games then the late games are automatically cancelled for that night).  We will try to get a timely message placed on our information Hot Line notifying teams that the late games have been cancelled.  Remember, tornado sirens could go off in other parts of the Tulsa area but not affect our immediate area (51st & Garnett) where the games are being played.

Score Keeping  Because of these situations, it is imperative that the home team score keeping is accurate.  When resuming play, whether it is the same day or later, the game may be resumed from the exact point in which it was suspended.

"The winners in life think constantly in terms of I can, I will, and I am. Losers, on the other hand, concentrate their waking thoughts on what they should have or would have done, or what they can't do." - Dennis Waitley
