Glad to hear that the Avery Point baseball team are earning another fine year in the winner's column. Nothing supersedes the most basic ballplayer's rule: It's much more fun to win... especially when you have a coach like Roger Bidwell. Here's a coach who could run a team at any level and is comfortable, with a great staff with him, to remain at Avery Point where learning baseball correctly is not only possible but likely. Now,there are the 285 baseball-playing Division I schools and 64 teams will head for the super regionals. They get exposure and recognition when ESPN begins coverage. Each year better facilities are built, supervised with financial boosts for coaching and operating budgets, hoping that their college season opens up with 55-60 degree day games.
I happened to peak out of Roger's office one afternoon in March and one of his pitchers are throwing outside with 4 layers of sweatshirts with snow in the forecast. How often do we see that anymore?
With the NCAA seeing the gradual missed class time from the big colleges, coach Bidwell seems to move the players on with their academic future.
Pro baseball have a powerful hold on us:
especially the inflation of franchises and salaries, have made it evident that the heart of the game is not physical but financial.
But if I want a release from the harsh, everyday American world, running on fast forward, I wouldn't hesitate to go to an Avery Point game, buy a few hot dogs and watch a talented bunch of kids. It's returning to a ball park in the belief that the game and the rules are unchanged - a continuation of what we have known and loved in the past. Good Luck Avery Point!
