New 2001-2002 Rule Changes
The Board of Directors considered the 180 rule-change proposals that were submitted
following review by the various committees and councils of USA Hockey. Key playing-rule changes, which will go into effect in 2001-2002, are as follows:
·Tag-up at the defensive blue line for a player returning to the game from the penalty bench (youth and Girls/Women) is no longer required.
·Mouthpiece attachment to the helmet/face mask is no longer required.
·The gross misconduct penalty was eliminated. All such infractions become match penalties.
·The goaltender may no longer play with a stick defined as broken.
·The use of electronic devices to communicate with players and goaltenders is prohibited.
·Teams may now have a captain and up to two alternate captains.
·A minor penalty will now be assessed to the goaltender for not playing the puck when
unpressured.
A new rule will also go into effect preventing head checking, which will be more specifically defined at a later date. The proposal to ban body checking at the Pee Wee level was defeated.
In addition, the Board of Directors voted to move forward with the re-launch initiative of the official website of USA Hockey,
http://www.usahockey.com/
The ongoing project is designed to create a site that is more dynamic, interactive and user-friendly. The first phase of the project is scheduled to go online by the end of September.
New DVHL Age Categories for 2002-2003
New DVHL Age Categories for 2002-2003
The DVHL has adopted the calendar year as the
time frame for eligibility at each level. The former cutoff of June 30th will be abolished
and the new rules will be in effect-not this season- but the 2002-2003 season. There have been varying viewpoints about how the kids would be affected- some reported that all players would get at least two years at all levels, while those born between Jan 1st and June 30th get a third year at their level?? Well, according to the DVHL posting, kids with July 1st through Dec. 31st birthdays will actually LOSE a year. Below is the age chart posted by the DVHL. You can access it at the following website address:
http://www.atlantic-district.org/latestnews.htm
Date of Birth/ Age Category/ Age Division
7/1/84 to
12/31/84 6 mos. of 18?s Midget
1985 17 years Midget
1986 16 years Midget
1987 15 years Midget
1988 14 years Bantam
1989 13 years Bantam
1990 12 years Pee Wee
1991 11 years Pee Wee
1992 10 years Squirt
1993 9 years Squirt
1994 8 & under Mite
This chart infers that players born between 1/1 - 6/30 will basically be unaffected by the change, while players born between 7/1-12/31 will lose a year. This seems pretty questionable when you consider that some kids who are first year Bantams but are born after 7/1/87 will play only one year at Bantam and then move onto to Midget Division.
We are told that there are more meetings to follow (August) and related issues and concerns will be addressed. Keep Posted.
