CONGRATULATIONS LIGHTNING 93GB
Congratulations to the Lightning 93GB team as they advanced through two tough weekends of play at the Lake Highlands Girls Classic League Qualifying Tournament. The team showed true determination in all their efforts, and qualified for the LHGCL for next season. The action began on August 1, 2004, when the Lightning team met Genesis 93 for their first round action and tied 1-1. The team then travelled to UTD where they were matched against the Comets Blue team and tied 0-0, which advanced them to the next round and eliminated Genesis 93. The second round began on August 7, 2004 with the Lightning team playing the Vipers and tieing the match 0-0. The final match for the team was playing the Texans Red West team that finished in the top three of LHGCL Division 2 last season. What started as a morning of nerves as TRW scored early in the first half came to a sudden halt as Lightning struck back late in the first half tieing the game up 1-1. The Girls then brought on their game and handled the TRW throughout the second half. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, and the Lightning 93GB qualified for the LHGCL as the Vipers were eliminated by points. Lightning girls we want each and everyone of you to know that we are so proud of you and your accomplishments. Your determination and hard work has paid off, but this is just the beginning. Austin Labor Day Results Game one of the Austin Labor Day Cup began before sunrise as the Lightning team prepared to play the first game of the day. Kickoff was at 7:00 am, and the Lightning team played Eclipse 93 solid for the first twenty five minutes before Eclipse 93 registered their first of four goals during the match. Hats Off to Erika as she stopped more than six other shots of goal as she would challenge the Eclipse offense in the box. Way to Go Erika. Final Eclipse 93 4 and Lightning 93 0 Game two of the tournament pitted the Lightning team against an old rival in the Vipers 93 with a kick off time of 3:40 pm. The temperature was a scorcher nearing 100 degrees. The lightning team came out aggressive and ready to play as more than ten shots on goal were registered against the Vipers. The defense showed their stopping power as the Vipers were allowed only five shots on goal. Erika was seen coming from the goal to take some abuse from the Vipers while covering the ball, and therefore sealing the shutout. Some highlights included Caitlyn and how she continuously found ways to come up with the ball, and Olivia made a strong run to chase down a Viper forward that would had a one on one against Erika. It was at the 24:33 mark of the game that the ball was passed from the defense to Lacy who in turn placed the ball into the box where the ball was bumped around a bit. Sarah found the ball and was able to push it forward where Courtney put the ball into the net giving Lightning a 1-0 lead over the Vipers. The final was Lighting 1 Vipers 0. Way to go Lightning. Game three of the tournament placed the Lighting playing against the Lonestar 93 GW on Sunday at 9:40 am. The skies were overcast, and Lightning came out with a flash as Elizabeth rattled the far post with a corner shot that was a near miss. During the game Lightning logged eight shots on goal, while Lonestar logged only five shot on goal. The Lonestar goal that was scored came from a corner kick that was rebounded into the corner of the net at the 21:14 mark of the first half. To begin the second half Lonestar imagined their need for help as they started the second half with twelve players on the field. Lightning took it to Lonestar 93 in the second half, but came up empty of goals. Holly made a great shot that was a little up and over. Christa and the rest of the defense played a great game only allowing four shots on goal. Final Lightning 93 0 Lonestar 93 GW 1. Lightning meets Tarrant Sting Lightning appears in the LHGCL opener against the number one seated Tarrant Sting with a kickoff time of 8:00 am. The game was began with a circle to honor those who died in the tragedy of the 911 attack, and a moment of silence. Lightning immediately took it to Sting when Elizabeth rattled one off the goal post within the first two minutes of the game, which got the attention of the Sting Team. The defense makes their mark known as Olivia chases down a Sting forward to stop a potential one on one with Goalie Erika. Christa was seen making several challenges throughout the game making some great steals from the Sting Offense. Lightning allowed only five shots on goal throughout the game four of which were stopped by Erika in the goal. The Lightning Offense poured it on through the game logging seven shots on goal. This match was very even and the lone goal scored on the day was logged by Sting after subbing. The final Tarrant Sting 1 Lightning 0. Way to go girls !!!!!!! Lightning takes on Soccer America Lighting played Soccer America on September 18 with a kick off time of 6:30 pm. Lightning came out strong in their efforts when Elizabeth crossed the ball from the right side nearly missing the goal. At the 12:26 mark of the first half Elizabeth again crossed the ball this time with Taylor waiting putting a left footed shot into the net. Great cross and great one touch! The midfield with Lacy, Kayla, Sarah, and Brittany showed their strength as they stopped numerous advances at the mid field mark. The defense showed up with some game in the first half as they easily controlled the offensive threats of SA. The second half came and Lightning seemed to stall some with some bad breaks. The defense and midfielders held tight until the match had just over three minutes remaining and SA was able to strike a goal. The lightning team fought hard to score in the last three minutes of the match, but came up short as the whistle blew after Jessica took a corner kick. Lightning tallied eleven shots on goal during the match, while only allowing SA six for the game. The final Lightning 1 and Soccer America 1 Lightning Takes it to Comets Blue First things first, WAY TO GO LIGHTNING!!!!! Lightning came out against Comets Blue who are currently leading Division 2. The lightning defense show grit as they went head to head with the Comets offense, and shut them down several times during the game. Olivia was assigned their offensive threat, and was able to shut her down during the game. At the 29:30 mark the Comets dropped a ball to their goalie and was faced with Lacy and Brittani attacking from the center of the field. The goalie ran out to near the edge of the box and kicked the ball into Brittani, which resulted in the ball finding the net. Luck I think not, but aggressive I would say YES. Way to attack. Lightning remembering what happened the week before, and you could see the defensive effort as the Comet threw everything that they had at the Lightning team. Erika made several great saves during the game, and registered her first shut out of the fall season. The final was Lightning eight shots on goal allowing the Comets only four shots on goal. Lightning 1 and the Comets Blue 0. Lightning VS Longhorns White Kickoff time was at 8:30 am, with a strong wind out of the east as the Texas Lightning met with the Longhorns. Lightning came out strong in the first two minutes of the game with two shots on goal from Elizabeth. Lightning takes the lead with a shot at the thirteen minute mark of the first half by Sarah putting lightning up 1-0. The second half the Longhorns turned on the pressure not allowing Lightning to make good on more than eight shots on goal. Longhorns scored twice in the second period. Lightning goalie Erika turned away seven shots on goal most coming in the latter half of the second period. Final Texas Lightning 1 Longhorns 2 Lightning vs Arsenal Texas Lightning logged more than eight shots on goal during the match, but was not able to captialize on their effort. During a sub in in the late first half Arsenal was able to put a shot on goal taking a 1-0 lead over lightning. Erika logged five saves on the day only allowing the one goal. Final Lightning 0 Texas Arsenal 1 Texas Lightning vs Spirit Red Texas Lightning comes on strong in the first period with five shots on goal, and a total control on the defensive side of the ball. Kayla scored at the 7:00 minute mark of the first period with a shot placed into the upper net, which was followed up by Jessica at the 26:00 mark of the first period with a well placed shot in the corner of the net out of the range of the goalie. The second period opened with Lightning allowing Spirit Red to regain control of the game. Spirit Red was able to gain advantage in the Lightning box scoring twice and tieing the game. Goalie Erika makes six saves during the game, while lightning had 10 shots on goal. Final Lightning 2 Spirit Red 2 Lightning 93 vs Tornados White The first to say regarding this long overdue game is WAY TO GO LIGHTNING. Believing in yourself and your team is the way. Lightning came out in the first period and logged five shots on goal with Jessica scoring at the 3:13 mark of the first period. The defense locked down the Tornados allowing no shots on goal in the first period. The standout performance of Kayla as she streaked all over the field causing great havoc on the Tornados Defense and Offense. The second period started with the Tornados driving the ball into the net in the first two minutes of the second period. The score was answered at the 5:06 minute mark of the second period when Jessica again answered the call on a Penalty Kick scoring for the second time. Lightning never looked back and scored three unanswered points. At the 26:30 mark Caitlyn crossed the ball and Brittany scored on the cross. At the games end 30:00 mark of the second Katherine drove the ball up the field and made a beautiful cross that Elizabeth chested into the goal. Most awesome performance on behalf of the Offense and Defense as this win was a total team effort. PLAY ON LIGHTNING 93 Final Lightning 93 4 Tornados White 1 Lightning 93 vs Texans Red West This is the toughest of articles to write as the Texas Lightning team brought on some serious game against the Texans RW. The game starts with the Lightning Defense standing up the offense of the Texans not budging an inch. The defensive team of Christa, Olivia, Holly and Taylor simply closed every gap the Texans attempted to create. Then you must see the Mid fielders of Lacy, Sarah, Brittany, Kayla, and Caitlyn and the pressure that they put on the offense, and stops that they made on defense. Then the front " Oh my goodness" when things all came together it had to be with Katherine, Elizabeth, Jessica, and Courtney as they just wore out the defense of the Texans. The offense utilized passes and crossing patterns to keep the Texans off balance. The game where defense was offense and offense was defense. Everyone of our girls came with all they had, and left nothing on the field. Erika continues to support the team as the goalie and had three saves on the day, and offered a bunch of support and direction to her team mates throughout the game. During the game the Lightning team had a combined total of 16 shots on goal to the Texans three shots. The lone score of the game came when the blind (OK polite) referee called a foul and gave the Texans a free kick, which resulted in the only score of the game for the Texans. My hats off to the Texans Goalie as surely this game could of been six to one in favor of Lightning. My heart was overcome with joy to our team come together as one and play with it all out there. CONGRATULATIONS LIGHTNING there was no loser at this game. Play on...................... TRW 1 Texas Lightning 0 The Match of Redemption The Lightning 93 team has long awaited the meeting with the Tejano's Black team, and this was the team that was ... Indoor Season Opens at APEX The opener for the winter indoor season has opened with the Lighting 93 facing Tarrant Sting Royal. The game started with Tarrant Sting Royal scoring three goals in the first half to set the Lightning Girls back. The great news is that the Lightning girls came out in the second half and said enough is enough. The Lightning fought back and shut out the Tarrant Sting Royal team in the second half, and scored four goals in the second half. One of the goals was not called by the referee, thus allowing the TSR to win the match 4-3. The goal shot by Christa clearly struck the right side of the net (back of the net), but was not called. Taylor did a great job and made some great plays in the net to stop advances of Sting. Great job to all the girls. |
