Background of the Tri-Valley League
A little history about the Tri-Valley League. In 1981, P.J. Wright of Medway and founder of the Tri-Valley League started his Baseball idea moving. Medway was only running an Intown Summer Program. Unfortunately, it was noticeable the ballplayers were losing motivation toward the sport. Therefore, Mr. Wright used his knowledge of the game and his contacts within the neighboring towns of Holliston, Millis, Hopkinton and Ashland to start forming the league. Once the 1982 season started, he could see the competition growing within the players and between the Towns. Specifically, he knew it could only benefit Baseball locally within the schools, the Senior Ruth and Legion Programs. Moreover, he knew it could help these players to prepare themselves in life. Therefore, he continued to develop this idea in 1983 by forming our present league by asking Milford, Bellingham, Medfield and Norfolk to join. Beside Mr. Wright's leadership to start this league, here is a quick list of distinguished volunteers that helped establish this league: Ashland - Paul Peso - Dennis Baker, Bellingham - Ed Nuget - Bill Roberts, Holliston - Bill Knight, Hopkinton - Ron Clark, Medfield - Tom McNeil, Milford - Jim Ferber, Millis - Gerry Sisto.
Besides the challenge of each player within each town to help win the ultimate game to make their team hold the Championship Title, Tri-Valley has always showed off its talent by having an All-Star Game for the two age Divisions. Of course the talent level is always high and a Most Valuable Player is always hard to award. Yes, these games always encouraged long time friendships which the players will cherish the remainder of their life.
Phil Beccia became President upon P.J. Wright's retirement from the League in 1994; consequently, at this juncture there was not much the league nor players could do to show their honor and respect towards Mr. Wright. Therefore, the League named the All-Star's Most Valuable Player trophy the "P.J. Wright MVP Trophy." Thus, Mr. Wright's name will live on with this League.
This league not only continues to grow in size yearly, but its philosophy has changed for the betterment of the ballplayer. With Phil Beccia as President and his present Board, the League will continue to prosper in the future. The Tri-Valley League will continue to teach our players the sport of Baseball, leadership and express the importance of education to ensure a better life for our ballplayers.
