Lady Spartans Making A Difference Off The Court
This past Saturday, the Lady Spartans teamed up off the court to make a difference for a wonderful cause. The girls participated in the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Cincinnati's "Buddy Walk". The team walked with "Anna's Squad" who was lead by Megan Thompson's little sister, Anna.
Everyone had a blast, despite the cold, walking for a great organization!
Turpin Too Much For Little Miami
Turpin met up with Little Miami High on Tuesday evening for a very important league match-up. The Lady Spartans won the first match of the series and with another win they could grasp ownership of the FAVC-C League Championship.
The Lady Spartans came out fired up to show the Panthers they belonged atop the league standings. Turpin jumped on the scoreboard right away and never looked back.
Spartans Down The Aves
The girls traveled to Sycamore High School Saturday morning to take on the Lady Aviators in an important non-conference match. Sycamore has a very strong volleyball program and they've played a tough conference schedule in the GMC. Beating a good team like Sycamore is a huge boost to any program and validation of their success.
Turpin may have been a little shell-shocked starting out the match because they were playing in front of the biggest crowd they've seen this season. Sycamore's fan section was packed with green and gold cheering on their team and they were hoping to take the energy away from the Lady Spartans.
In set one, both teams traded point for point until 12-11 when their star, left-handed server came around in the rotation. The Lady Aves then went on an 11-0 serving run. Turpin took a time-out and was able to break her concentration but, was only able to score a measly four points before the Lady Aves took the last three to end the set at 23-25.
Disappointed with their performance, the Spartans took the court determined to redeem themselves. The fans didn't have to wait long to see that Turpin was eager to even the score to one set each. They quickly jumped out to an 18-8 lead and were unwilling to let the ball touch on their side of the court. Then, setter Caroline Mashni stepped up to the serving line and served seven points (with two aces) to give the Spartans an easy set two victory of 25-8.
With each team winning a set, the match was forced into a third set tie-breaker. Sycamore won the coin toss and was awarded the first serve but, Turpin opted for the same side hoping to continue their luck. This game was a nail-biter from the beginning. Both teams seemed to score their points in chunks of three or four at a time. With the Lady Spartans down 22-18, outside hitter Maria Steller stepped up and served four points to tie the set. Turpin made a passing error giving Sycamore the advantage but, the Lady Spartans solid play on the next point tied the score at 23-23. Defensive specialist, Kaitlin Sommer, sealed the deal with two strong serves to end the third set with a Spartan victory of 25-23.
With a win over Sycamore, Turpin moves to a 13-4 record on the season. On Tuesday 10/6/09, Turpin welcomes league rival Little Miami to Klinger Court. They will also host cross-divisional rival Loveland on Thursday. Games begin at 4:30. See you there!
