NSA National Championship 2018
The 9th annual NSA Youth Division National Championship step show weekend will take place March 23-24th 2018 in Daytona Beach, Florida. Top elementary, middle high school and collegiate division step teams will compete for national bragging rights.
“Nationals” weekend is more than simply a step show event. Students will have the opportunity to take a college tour of Bethune–Cookman University along with visiting area cultural and entertainment venues. The championship step show will take place on Bethune Cookman‘s campus in the Performing Arts Center. Members of the BCU Greek community will serve as hosts for step teams visiting Daytona Beach and the University.
We encourage all teams to take advantage of the wealth of activities and opportunities to interact with other teams, coaches, leagues, and to participate in the non-competition offerings. The N.S.A. National Championships are so much more than just a step competition. We want our members and leagues to enjoy a weekend full of memories and experiences that transcend the art form itself.

Lake Ridge Dynasty Steppers
They've placed first in every competition they've been a part of in North Texas and now, a group of young ladies from Mansfield say they have what it takes to make it to the national competition.
They call themselves the Lake Ridge High School "Dynasty Step Team." These 43 young ladies without a doubt demand your attention when they're on stage during their powerful step routines. And for the past two years, at every local competition, they have come out on top.
The team says they are surprised by their success and now they want to go up against some of the best step teams in the country.
"We feel like we've conquered the DFW area, and you know, we want to compete against the other teams up north, we want to compete against teams in Atlanta, North Carolina, New York, St. Louis, everybody," said Dynasty Step Team coach, Kerry Wright. "It's going to take a lot of hard practice outside of school, it's going to take determination. We have to be willing to try new things and be humble. Because it gets frustrating, but as long as we have each other and we stick together, then we can make it to nationals again," Dynasty member Oliva Thompson said. So the team was invited to go to the national competition last year in Memphis, but could not raise enough money to go.
The competition is in Daytona Beach, Florida, in March. Some of the best in the country will compete for the national title, and a grand prize.
If you'd like to help send these young ladies to the national competition, checks may be made payable to:

REFINED LADY EAGLES STILL NUMBER ONE
|Refined Lady Eagles (Texas)|
Several of our member(Texas) teams competed in the 7th Annual Stompzilla Step Show in Garland, TX. on Saturday, November 16, 2013. Most of the teams performed exciting routines, including the Bowie Souljahs, who won grand champion. However, it was the reigning Texas State Champions, the Refined Lady Eagles of Rowlett High School that showed that they are still number one.
The Refined Lady Eagles dissimated the competition with crisp precise routines and a beautiful team stunt for the finale. It was a spectacular performance. The MSSL would like congratulate our member teams that placed in the competition.

TEXAS TEAMS SWEEPS NATIONALS
On Saturday, March 10, 2012 at the Belmont University Curb Event Center, the Lady Souljahs ofArlingotn ISD, G Phi Smooth from HEB ISD and MA'AT from Irving ISD destroyed the hopes and dreams of teams from across the country. The TSTA teams who put together some of the best step routines that we have seen them do all year, seemed as though they were hypnotized with the intent to destroy everything in sight. They also used creative themes. Coach Morehead stated "All I know is that LD Bell (G Phi Smooth) gave me chills." It was one heck of a night as teams from across the country competed to become the supreme champion for the 2011-12 season. Chris Caldwell, TSTA President said that he was "elated by the victory" of the Texas teams when he received word of the Texas Sweep. Mr. Caldwell had to accompany a stepper to the hospital after she fainted right after the Lady Souljahs performance. The Lady Souljahs are the first team in the State of Texas to win the NSSA's National Championship and this is their second title.
Coaches Demond Halsey, and Josh Boone worked with the Lady Souljahs to prepare for this competition as well. They were all excited for the Lady Souljahs. Coach Halsey, who put in numerous hours with the team was especially excited because the team had only 4 weeks to prepare for this competition. Coach Caldwell also wanted to acknowledge everyone in his camp that helped the Lady Souljahs win Nationals. They are as follows:
Darius Simmons-Asst Coach
Ardran Robinson, Sam Houston Coach
Doris Morehead, Seguin and Bowie Coach
Demond Halsey, Lamar Coach
Josh Boone, TSTA Assist Director of Training
Bryce Fergurson, Executive Assistant to TSTA President
Desiree Griggs, Lady Souljahs Manager
Michelle Wilmoth, Bowie Principal
Jeff Provence, Lamar Principal
Beverly McReynolds, Sam Houston Principal
O J Kemp, AISD Athletic Director
Jimmy Walker, AISD Asst Superintendent
Jerry McCulloug, AISD Superintendent
In the LD Bell (G Phi Smooth) camp is was no real surprise that they won because they have been unstoppable all year. Their only defeat came at hands of the Stomp Wars judges on March 3, 2012. This was not a surprise either (see article below). Coach Tim McDaniel was also elated about the performance of his team and the Texas Teams. Coach McDaniel would also like to thank the team of coaches who worked countless hours to help his team achieve this victory:
Awais Ahmed, Asst Coach
Sean Price, Asst Coach
Kevin Mitchell, Asst Coach
Terrique Handy, Asst Coach
Regina Starks, Booster Club President
Needless to say, Coach Monique Booker, MA'AT Steppers was also overjoyed. She is probably the most animated of all the coaches in TSTA. She was totally engrossed in the winning moment. She said that after last year's 1st runner up placing, she knew exactly what to do. Obviously, she did because she pulled out all the stops; including a very creative cup routine. It was a great performance. Coach Mo would also like to thank her team who assisted in acheiving this victory

TSTA TEAMS WIN STOMP WARS
The Stomp Wars Competition is probably the most controversial show of the year in terms of judging. This year was no exception. Although, our TSTA teams placed first through third in various divisions, there was still the dark cloud over the results because of the type of score card used and the lack of professional training received by the judges. It is no secret to anyone in Texas that the TSTA has the most comprehensive judges training in the nation. It is even more comprehensive than our national organization NSSA, yet the Stomp Wars judges have not received training from either organization.
However, on another note, the Teen Summit was excellent. Most coaches/sponsors were very pleased with the way this was put together and the obvious benefits to the students. This is a very valuable component of the Stomp Wars program. TSTA would like to congratulate the Stomp Wars Group on a great show and summit. TSTA would also like to congratulate all of the winners and those that participated in the competition.

TSTA WINS LEAGUE OF THE YEAR,
NSSA Host 2nd Annual Stepping Conference
(Nashville, TN) The NSSA held its 2nd annual Stepping Conference in July. People from across the nation came to Nashville for the conference. The conference provided the opportunity for NSSA members and supporters to share ideas from within the “stepping community” as well as plan for the upcoming 2010-2011 step season, which begins in September. The conference also discussed involvement with college stepping activities, as the NSSA has been approached for judge training and event support by college students and administrators over the past years.
At the conference the 3rd annual NSSA awards were presented. The Texas Step Team Association (TSTA) was recognized with the inaugural 2009-2010 Youth Step League of the Year Award. Kevia Shepard, coach of the Upper County Steppers (Maryland) was recognized as the 2009-2010 Coach of the Year. Members of the Texas league received their award in Nashville, while Ms. Shepard, who could not attend, will be recognized with a presentation in September.
“The actions of the awardees really demonstrate what the NSSA supports at the youth level,” said Rowland Yancey, the NSSA Board Chair, “stepping is a unique way to keep kids physically active and focused on academics. Across the country there are many leagues and individuals that are doing great work with young people.”
Chris Caldwell, TSTA member stated “ this was my first time attending the conference and I can’t begin to tell you how informative the conference was. We were able to meet like minded coaches who we were able to share ideas and strategies with. Additionally, the League of the Year Award was very gratifying for us because we have worked very hard in organizing our State and setting state wide standards that are aligned with the NSSA.
The NSSA will host the annual Youth Stepping Championships in April 2011. The High School Division championship will be held in Nashville and the Middle School Division championship will be held in Dallas.
The National Step Show Alliance is a 501(c )3 non-profit organization, founded in 2005. The NSSA’s mission is to grow the awareness and appreciation of the stepping artform.

BOARD MEMBERS JUDGE DISNEY STEP CLASSIC
Over the Labor Day weekend, two of our board members, Chris Caldwell and Lakendra Smalley, traveled to Orlando, FL to conduct a Steppers Workshop and Judge the Annual Disney Step Classic. Caldwell and Smalley were invited to the Disney Step Classic along with 14 other NSSA members from across the country. I spoke with Mr. Caldwell and Ms. Smalley about their experiences.
Mr. Caldwell stated "I thought is was an honor to be invited to judge such an event. My teams did not compete so it was the perfect time for me to attend. It was a great experience. I learned a lot especially about how to run an effective competition. I also got to put my Certified Judge credentials to use. I am now more convinced than ever that the judges certification process must remain a crucial part of TSTA as we move forward. All of the Disney judges were certified and I could really see the benefits of this process. All in all, it was a great competition and congratulations to the winners."
Ms. Smalley said "I was very excited about going to Orlando to assist with the competition and the workshops. Chris and I really showed the rest of the country how things are done in Texas. I really enjoyed conducting the workshop and judging the competition. I taught a step routine that I haven't used in a long time and the kids really enjoyed it. Many of the things that I learned were very beneficial and I plan to put the knowledge to good use. Additionally, we were treated extremely well by the Disney and NSSA staff. I am really excited about the partnership between NSSA and TSTA. So far it has proven to be very positive.
Ms. Smalley will be sharing additional information about the Disney Step Classic, the National Stepping Workshop and other Summer events at tonight's TSTA General Meeting.
