OVERVIEW
Trinity fields basketball teams for students in grades 2-8. The first graders participate in a basketball clinic that is held in March. Organizing the teams, recruiting coaches, obtaining league placements, hosting the sports banquet, and a variety of other associated activities are coordinated by the Trinity Athletic Committee (TAC). TAC is comprised of volunteer parents and the current gym teacher. Over 150 students participated in the basketball program last year.
The goals of the basketball program are: 1) To have fun and build school spirit, 2) To teach fundamental basketball skills, and 3) To allow every child an opportunity to compete, and compete at an appropriate level for their skills. This third task is especially challenging and we would like to share a little of the process we go through with you.
At the close of registration, we have an idea of the number of children who wish to play in a grade, and the number of parents who have volunteered to coach. The relationship between these two sets of numbers is the principal determining factor in planning the upcoming season. Some of the leagues we participate in are based on the grades of the players, some on the ages of the players.
Sometimes the number of players determines how teams are formed. For example, if we have 14 players in a grade and one coach, we may look at playing a few players up or down a grade. Additionally, if we only have 4 or 5 players in a grade, we will look at the years previous and following to see if there are adequate numbers to form a team which would include those 4 or 5. If we did not operate in this manner, we would have to “cut” children from playing.
PRACTICE SCHEDULE
The practice schedules will be determined once registration is completed and teams have been placed in leagues (approx mid-October). In general, middle school grades will practice on weekday evenings and elementary school grades will practice on Saturday. Practices will begin in October or November, and run until early March. Games will be held once a week, and those times will be determined by the respective league coordinators. Please refer to the www.trinitytigers.org for the latest version of the gym schedule.
Registration and Fees
As you are aware, we have gone to a “on-line” registration process. Please refer to www.trinitytigers.org website for registration information (forms, fees, and deadlines).
