Questions & Answers

What is the Challenger Division? The Challenger Division offers boys and girls with physical and mental challenges, ages 5 to 18 (or until the completion of high school), the opportunity to participate in an organized game of baseball. The fundamental goal of the division is to give everyone a chance to play. Teams typically will include from 12-15 players.

What is Tri-Cities Little League? Tri-Cities Little League is a local Little League that was founded in 1953 and serves the Dundee, Carpentersville and Gilberts areas. We have enrollment of close to 800 players from the ages of 5-18 with over 50 baseball and softball teams. In 2009, the inaugural year of Challenger, the division had 54 players on four different teams. We are affiliated with Little
League International.

How does the program work? A “buddy” is assigned to each Challenger Player and will be a boy or girl, at least 11 years old, and either a volunteer from the Tri-Cities Little League or from within the community. The buddy is responsible for playing side by side with the Challenger player and assisting them throughout the game. Activities include helping them play in the field, talking to them in the dugout, helping them hit, moving them around the bases if needed, and talking about the game after it is over.

What will Tri-Cities provide? Tri-Cities will provide uniforms, playing fields,
equipment, registration, team assignments and reasonable accommodations to
facilitate play. Where/When are the games played? The games will be played on
our regulation baseball fields, primarily at South End Park. The Tri-Cities field locations are throughout the Dundee and Carpentersville areas. Challenger games are typically played on Sunday afternoons.

What does the program cost? Tri-Cities will be offering this program to participants at no charge do to the overwhelming generosity of donations that have been received. Help to keep those donations coming!

When does the program start?
Tri-Cities anticipates a May start date. We plan to play games during the months of May and June.

How many games will be played? This will depend on a variety of factors including the number of participants. The goal is to have each team play 6-8 games.

Can I volunteer to help? Absolutely. The easiest way is to help is by spreading the word about the Challenger Program. Assistance will be needed in the coordination of a variety of activities to help the program grow and succeed. Tri-Cities has a group of volunteers committed to the program and to making it work. Parental involvement will be a key to our success. We are also always looking for
Buddies as well.
