A very happy and proud Coach Perez called me this evening with his postgame comments. Ken and his staff have been coaching for a lot of years. This team, this year meant a lot to them. I asked him to sum up the team in a couple of words. "Stubborn and Dynamic." Pretty powerful words that describe the character of a team that will help to form a powerful varsity squad next year. "There are some very talented kids on this sophomore team that are going to make the varsity squad something special next year," stated Perez. In closing, Ken Perez stated that he would be organizing a team party soon. It would not take the place of the awards banquet later in the month, but he did want to have an individual event with his team to close the season. "I'm so very proud of our 2009 team. It was a great way to go," said Perez.

2009 SOPHOMORE SCHEDULE Handout: Sophomore 09 Schedule Wednesday, April 29 SOPHOMORES DOMINATE OVER CHAVEZ
The Sophomore Bulldogs gave Coach Perez an early birthday present by connecting for 17 hits in a one-sided win over the Titans. Dominic D'Souza had a no hitter through 4 innings of work. In the 5th, he gave up a double and Coach Perez went with the big red head to strike out the side. "That's what I call Steven Skillsky now, The Big Red Head Who Comes In And Throws Me Strikes," said Coach Perez. "We played well today and I'm proud that the guys stayed up the whole game and played to their standard of baseball. I expect a different game over at Chavez. They always play us tough there." Coach Perez will go with Josh Wesely on Friday as the Sophomores continue their pursuit of a league title. Coach Perez wanted to extend his thanks to Kennette Sanfilippo and her band of cohorts who were at Straw Hat Pizza.
WESELY NO HITS CHAVEZ / TREW HITS HR With Gary Reeve at the helm, the Bulldogs gave him a solid win as he covered for Coach Perez who was out of town. In addition to the Trew blast and the Wesely 5 inning no hitter, James Fisher was 3-3 with solid line drives in each at bat. Nick Camper had 3 RBIs and a triple.

D'SOUZA PITCHES THE SOPH'S ONE STEP CLOSER TO A LEAGUE TITLE
Dominic D'Souza was solid on the mound today for the sophomores as he had himself a 3 hit, 13K and no run performance. "The walks were a bit high at 6, but he pitched a heck of a game," said Coach Perez. Perez went on to say that D'Souza was a bit under the weather leading into the game but he seemed to shake it off and attack the Lodi hitters. For the sophomore Bulldogs, they are now 8-1 in league with one to play. A win on Friday would at a minimum, give them a share of the league title with Lincoln (if Lincoln keeps winning). This would be a first for Tracy as they have always placed 2nd or 3rd in league.
Saturday, April 25 BULLDOGS SWEEP WOLFPACK
The Sophomore Bulldogs battled back from a 3 run deficit early to defeat their cross town rival 10-7 on a beautiful Saturday of late season baseball. Josh Wesely who was the designated hitter for the Bulldogs, had a big day at the plate driving home 4 runs on a single and double. In a freak accident at the plate, Nick Camper fouled a ball up into his face. Aaron Walker who replaced him, was spiked by at 3rd and will require stitches.
It was a hard fought battle with West. Tracy suffered two injuries in the game. In one play at 3rd, Aaron Walker was spiked during a slide. Earlier in the game, Nick Camper fouled a ball from his bat up into his face which cut open the bridge of his nose. (Note on photo below of Camper. It's not my policy to take or post photos of injuries. These were taken at the request of the Coach and Player).
Thursday, April 23 SOPHOMORES SCORE EARLY AND OFTEN
WP: Wesely 6 IP, 3R, 1ER, 4H, 9K, 1BB Skillsky: 1 IP, 3K Coach Perez didn't like the four errors committed by Tracy, but other than that he was in good spirits on a Friday night. His team hit the ball well and pitched well to handle the Yellowjackets. Nick Camper was 2 for 4 with an inside the park homerun in the 5th. Tyler Sanfilippo, Tyler Trew, and James Fisher all had doubles. Wesely and Skillsky combined to strikeout 12 Yellowjackets.
Wednesday, April 22 SOPHOMORE'S CRUISE TO WIN BEHIND D'SOUZA
WP: D'Souza
D'Souza 4+ IP, 0R, 1H, 6K, 4BB, 1 HBP Skillsky 1 IP, 0R, 2K Coach Perez had sort of a neutral demeanor after his team defeated Franklin 12-0. He was pleased to get another league win, but he was concerned with elements of lackluster play from his club and a degree of erratic pitching shown by his starter, Dominic D'Souza. "It was exciting to see him go after a no hitter entering that 5th inning, but he had thrown 80 pitches and walked 4. We as a coaching staff decided that was enough and we went with our strike thrower Steven Skillsky," said Perez. "We did not put on a clinic today, but we got the job done. I expect even better things from my club Friday at Franklin." Coach Perez went on to mention that his club will play West at 1 p.m. Saturday at Tracy High. Practice on Thursday will be modified. Players should come in shorts to Monte Vista prepared for batting practice only. West High will be playing a game on the field due to a scheduling issue. Monday, April 20 ST. MARY'S PULLS AHEAD TO DEFEAT THE SOPHOMORE BULLDOGS
The St. Mary's bats were just a little too much for Tracy as the Rams pulled ahead of the Bulldogs in the middle innings to defeat Tracy Monday afternoon in a 93 degree April heat wave. Things started promising for the Bulldogs as they took an early 3-1 lead behind the pitching of Steven Skillsky and Nick Camper. Tyler Trew hit a solo homerun in the 3rd, Dominic D'Souza and Casey Wichman tripled.
Ken Perez was a bit disappointed in his postgame press conference Monday evening. "We lost our fire and determination midway through the game today. Sure it was a hot day but that's no excuse," said Perez. "It's not the loss that bothers me today, it's our overall team approach that began to slip away in the 4th inning. We will discuss our loss of spirit over the next couple of days as we prepare to resume league play Wednesday," said Perez. Perez complimented the Rams. "Look, we have a good ball club with excellent pitching. You have to give them credit they put 13 hits up against us, executed the small things, and didn't let the heat get to them."

"It wasn't our best game, but we got the job done today," said Coach Perez. "It was nice to get the competitive juices flowing again after a long break." When asked about Friday's home game against Bear Creek, Perez stated that Josh Wesely will start with backup from Nick Camper and Tyler Trew. "I'm confident we are going to play even better on Friday," said Perez.

"It took a very good team to beat us today, and Lincoln was the better team. They hit the heck out of the ball on their home turf." The home turf was described by Perez as a fast surface and a wind tunnel. "The course played slick today." Perez stated he was not disappointed with the overall effort of his team. "We played our hearts out and lost." It was a walk off grand slam by the winning pitcher and D.H. Tony Giacovoni in the bottom of the 7th off Nick Camper that was the death spike for the Bulldogs. "Nick pitched well today, and I wish I had gone to him sooner. Even though he got the loss, I'm probably going to start giving him more innings based on the way he threw his first two innings." Perez went on to provide details about his starter Josh Wesely. "He was inefficient for us today. He gave up 8 earned runs and 9 hits in 3 2/3 innings of work. I look for a better performance from him the next time he goes out," said Perez. Matt Patterson also pitched to a couple of batters in the middle of the game giving up 2 earned runs and not retiring a batter. In closing Perez said it was a tough day but that his team will bounce back. He was very confident of that!

No luck with this squad, just pure talent and desire to win. Coach Perez was very proud of his squad as they faced and defeated a good Lincoln team this afternoon to pick up league victory #1. In the game several excellent defensive relays were made. Perez described them as follows: "In the 5th with the game tied 3-3, we had our biggest play of the game when a Lincoln's player named Pinzon hit a solid double to the gap in left/center. He was well on his way to a triple when Levand threw perfectly to Trew cutting the ball off and then Trew threw a strike to Walker at 3rd to eliminate the threat," said Perez. "In another great play to end the game, Fisher threw another ball to Trew who relayed to Daily at the plate to end the game." "Another ESPN highlight moment was the towering 400 foot homerun that Tyler Sanfilippo hit to straight away center that hit the top of the Conex (shipping/storage container). It was massive," said a jubilant Perez. "We will start Wesely on Friday," said Perez.
Pitching: D'Souza (W) 5IP, 3R, 3ER, 5H, 3K, 2BB, 1HBP Perez comment "D'Souza pitched a good game. I could have taken him into the 6th, but he had pitched 73 pitches so we decided to go with Skillsky at that point." Skillsky(S) 2 IP, 3R, 3ER, 4H, 2K, 1BB
SOPHOMORE GAME SUMMARY
Sorry for the delay, here are the Sophomore Stats from Saturday: Mission Accomplished! That was the theme from Ken Perez as he took stock in the pre-season accomplishments of his inspired 2009 Sophomore squad. A 12-0 record is deserving of a standing ovation, however the wins and losses mean more starting on Wednesday. Perez was very pleased with the pitching performance he got from Josh Wesely and Matt Patterson who combined for a 1 hitter. Perez also singled out the hitting of Casey Wichman. "Casey is moving up in the lineup as he begins to increase his consistency and power at the plate." Perez stated he will start Dominic D'Souza on Wednesday against Lincoln. He will also use Tuesday to evaluate the status of Andy Levand who is suffering from slight soreness.

Tuesday, March 24 SOPHOMORES GUT OUT A WIN
"These kids do not know how to lose, and they take it personal." Those were the words from Ken Perez as his special club of 2009 stayed on a roll today to extend their unbeaten streak to 11 on the season. They had to come from behind trailing 6-5 late in the game. "Dominic D'Souza pitched a good game and didn't want to come out, but I felt I had to make a change late," said Perez. Perez was very pleased with his next decision when he put Steven Skillsky in for relief. "He was solid throwing 3 effortless innings during a tense part of the game," said Perez. "I was really proud of his performance today." Other players that had a good day were James Fisher who went 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored, Casey Wichman 2-4 with 2 RBIs, Tyler Sanfilippo doubled, Andy Levand was 2 for 5, and Dominic D'Souza was 2 for 5 with an RBI.

Saturday, March 21 SOPHOMORES A PERFECT 10 Coach Ken Perez was in a great mood on Saturday night after his ball club had an efficient win versus Alameda. "It was a well played ball game today. Tyler Trew was fantastic at shortstop today making some tremendous plays for us to support a good game pitched by Josh Wesely," said Perez. "If I have one gripe, it's all the walks we keep giving up. That needs to come down to a more reasonable level or we will eventually get burned." Perez was referring to the 6 walks on the day. Thinking ahead to Tuesday's matchup against West, Perez said "it's a special game for us. We are 10-0 and on our way to a very special season, but a win against West is a must if we are going to look back on this season and consider it complete." Perez will start Dominic D'Souza and have Matt Patterson and Steven Skillsky ready to go in relief.
PItching: Wesely 6 1/3 IP, 1R, 1ER, 3H, 4K, 6BB Patterson 2/3 IP, 1H, 1K, 0R, 0ER Coaches comment on Patterson......"throwing like he threw today, he is going to get more innings. Well done." Thursday, March 19 9-0 AND FEELING FINE Dominic D'Souza was shagging balls on Thursday afternoon at practice and mentioned how much homework he had waiting for him at home. He said it with a smile on his face though, because at that moment there was no other place he wanted to be but on diamond with his teammates enjoying a crisp practice under the guidance of Ken Perez and staff. I spent a few minutes at the Sophomore practice this afternoon taking in the positive vibe that surrounds this team and trying to unlock from the coaches and a couple of players what makes them so successful......what makes them tick. A 10 minute video can be found below. Tuesday, March 17 SOPHOMORES CONTINUE TO ROLL Undefeated through 9 games and feeling very confident. That sums up the Sophomore Bulldogs as they dominated Atwater today 24-9.
The win went to Dominic D'Souza who pitched 4 innings. Coach Perez announced that Wesely will get the start Saturday vs Alameda.
Pitching: D'Souza (W) 4 IP, 5R, 4ER, 6H, 4K, 2BB Skillsky 1 IP, 3R, 3ER, 4H, 0K, 1BB Saturday, March 14 SOPHOMORES BANG HOMERUNS TO REMAIN UNDEFEATED Coach Perez had mixed feelings after his 8th victory of the season Saturday. "Well obviously I'm happy with a 16 run - 13 hit day, but we have to start reducing the number of walks we are giving up on the mound." Perez was referring to the 7 walks given up by his two pitchers today. Tyler Sanfilippo and Nick Camper each hit powerful 2 run homeruns this afternoon to keep Tracy undefeated as they get a step closer towards league which begins in about two weeks.
Pitching: Wesely 2 2/3 IP, 5R, 3ER, 4H, 3K, 3BB, 2HBP Patterson 2 1/3 IP, 1R, 1ER, 2H, 1K, 4BB Coach Perez announced that Dominic D'Souza will be the starter when they travel to Atwater Tuesday.
Thursday, March 12 SOPHOMORES WERE SLUGGISH BUT GOT IT DONE LATE Coach Perez felt like he had some early St. Patrick's Day Luck during his game on Wednesday. "We were sluggish Stu, we battled back but didn't play all that well today," said Perez. "Their pitcher, John Seidel, was pretty good and his off speed stuff was killing us. We did not get engaged with the bats until late. Keys to the game was the pitching of Dominic D'Souza in long relief, a key double play in the top of the 7th to extinguish a Lancer threat, and the Jordan Tencati hit to drive home the winning run." "I plan on starting Josh Wesley on Saturday vs Pacific Grove," stated Perez.
Pitching Stats: Trew: 0+ innings pitched, 4 runs, 4 earned runs, 3 walks, 1 HBP, 2 wild pitches D'Souza: 6 innings pitched, 1 run, 2 hits, 10 Ks, 2 walks, 1 earned run, 1 HBP Camper: 1 inning pitched, 1 K, 1 walk Monday, March 9 SOPHOMORE GAME SUMMARY Coach Perez was in a very good mood Monday night feeling relaxed as his team has cruised to a 6-0 start. The squad is producing a positive vibe that is contagious to the coaching staff. "These kids don't understand anything but winning. They expect to win everytime they step foot on the field," Perez said. Monday night was no different. After coming off an emotional weekend victory over Bishop O'Dowd, the coaching staff was a bit nervous that there might be a letdown Monday. No such outcome. Josh Wesely delivered again on the mound with 5 innings of 1 run, 2 hit, and 5 strikeout ball all delivered behind only 69 pitches. "He has been my most consistent starter to date," said Perez. Dominic D'Souza had quite a game too going 3 for 3 with a double. "I plan on throwing Tyler Trew on Wednesday against East Union," said Coach Perez before he retired for the evening.
Sunday, March 8 SOPHOMORE SPIRIT One thing I noticed on Saturday was the spirit and enthusiasm of the 2009 Sophomores. This team has something special going on. I think this picture captures some of that.

Tracy High journalism teacher and yearbook advisor Wayne Thallander took some photos at the Sophomore game Monday night. Some of these photos will be in the school yearbook in May. Wayne's photos are in my photo gallery now for your viewing and printing pleasure. I've already taken dozens of photos of the varsity and freshman and submitted them to the yearbook.
Monday, March 2 SOPHOMORES GO CRAZY AT THE PLATE
With only 10 players active today due to an Ag/Science Field Trip, all 10 contributed with every player getting at least one hit. Some did quite a bit more than that. Steven Skillsky had a good day on both offense and defense pitching 4 innings and only giving up 2 hits. "His fastball was on target and he hit his spots well," said Coach Perez. Skillsky threw 74 pitches in the game and had 11 strikeouts with 2 walks. Steven also had a 3 run bomb to left.
Saturday, February 28 SOPHOMORES GET A NOT SO PRETTY WIN
Just like the first game, Andy Levand led off the game with a double. Tyler Sanfilippo and Casey Wichman homered in the victory and Tyler Trew got the win. Of concern to all the Sophomores is the health of pitcher Joshua Wesely. "He took a shot off the left shin, I think he is okay but the family took him to the doctor for some evaluation," stated Coach Perez. "Bottom line is we did not play very well. We did hit the ball hard, but overall we did not reach our potential today. I'm happy to walk away with a win," stated Perez.
Monday, February 23 SOPHOMORES WIN HOME OPENER VS SONORA
"It was nice to get that first win under our belts today," said Coache Perez. "We hit the ball well, and most of our hits (six of them) were doubles." "If I had one area of improvement, it would be that we lost our focus in the last inning and Sonora made us pay as they did not give up. Had there been fewer Sonora errors, this would have been a much closer game." Joshua Wesely picked right up where he left off last year picking up wins on the mound. Dominic D'Souza was the offensive standout with three hits (2 doubles) along with Nick Camper who had two doubles also.

I came to Tracy High Wednesday afternoon thinking I was going to take some pictures of the freshman, sophomore, and varsity practice. Once I arrived I was thrown a curve ball by Coach Perez when he asked me to interview his assistant, Coach Campbell. My few minutes with Coach Campbell were very rewarding as I met a very tough, good natured man who has a very positive outlook on his life as he now confronts his 3rd round of cancer. His story is below:In 1992 Coach Campbell had his first battle with cancer when it invaded his throat area. It was a tough ordeal but Jim came through and was now a cancer survivor. The cancer returned in 2006 to an area slightly lower than where it appeared the first time. Again Jim fought through the treatment and persevered a 2nd time.Just recently, Jim was diagnosed again with cancer of the throat. He will soon begin chemotherapy treatment in Turlock at an extension of the Stanford Mecical Center. “If I have to go through this, I’m going to the best place available in Stanford” commented Campbell. “I’m not changing anything in my routine until I have to. I’m going to get up, go to work, go get my treatments in Turlock, and return in time to coach the team.”I saw a calm and confident man in Coach Campbell today. He ended our encounter talking about how much he loves baseball, enjoys coaching the Sophomores with Ken, Gary, and Matt, and what a great support structure of friends he has to help get him through this. Please put Jim and his family in your thoughts and prayers. |
