HURDLER BASICS

Hurdles

Hurdle events for women include the 100 and 400 meter races and for men the 110 and 400 events. Good characteristics of a hurdler include height, great sprinting ability and good form. The goal is to have 3 strides between hurdles but this is a hard goal to achieve. Younger athletes run shorter distances and have smaller and fewer hurdles. Older athletes have longer distances, higher and more hurdles to jump. males and females aged 12-13 will run 80 meters, jump 8 hurdles at a lower height. Males 14-17 may run 100 meters, jump 10 hurdles at a height of.762 or run 110 meters, jump 10 hurdles at a height of .914 or .990. Females aged 14-17 run 80 meters and jump 8 hurdles at a height of .762. Also, the 400 meter race has many variations as well as to number and height of hurdles. The specifications really depend on the league or competition's requirements. It is always a good idea to look into important variables before you start training.

Last but not least: To be a successful hurdler one must have rhythm, tempo and understand their stride count.
