Expectations for the Torrey Pines High School Baseball program have risen with the Falcons recent successes achieved under the direction of Head Coach Matt Chess. The 2007 Falcons repeated as Champs of the competitive Palomar League and reached the finals of the 2007 Division I CIF Championship Tournament, losing 3-2 to Granite Hills in the final championship game.
The 2008 team faces the challenge of filling the shoes of ten graduates (7 starters) from the 2007 Falcon squad that fell just short of its goal of winning the CIF Championship. However, driven by the accomplishments and post-season experience of last year, the 2008 Falcon team looks to make its own mark in the TPHS Baseball program. Leading the program in his 3rd year at the helm, Head Coach Matt Chess seeks to continue the momentum with the help of Assistant Coaches, Mike Wahlstrom and Fred Shuey.

The Falcon Field workday was a huge success as the tremendous turnout of parent and student volunteers on Sunday, Feb 10th, translated into a much-needed facelift of the playing field and other facilities. Coaches directed the participants in successfully rebuilding the pitching mound and homeplate areas. Grass surface boundaries were re-edged and the grounds received an overall general cleaning treatment. Returning varsity Moms lent a helping hand, sanitizing the player clubhouse - cleaning virtually every surface, including lockers, floors and refrigerator. Thanks to all the hard work contributed by the workday participants - players, coaches and spectators will have better conditions for this season's competition at Falcon Field. - Click on the photos to see more scenes from the workday.

The re-tooling of the team was accomplished with the addition of two seniors, seven juniors, two sophomores and one freshman, for a total of twelve (12) new faces joining the ten holdovers from 2007, filling-out the roster of 22 players.
"The coaching staff wants to thank all who participated in this year’s tryouts," Coach Chess added when he announced the final roster. "It was an extremely difficult decision coming down to the final list."
"Congratulations to the players on this list for making the 2008 Torrey Pines Varsity Baseball team."

PALOMAR LEAGUE - Teams listed in projected order of finish:
1. Poway
Coach: Bob Parry
2007 record: 25-9, 11-4 (second)
Returnees: RHP Brian Busick (Sr.), RHP Drew Leininger (Sr.), 1B Alex Dickerson (Sr.), CF Jason Brunansky (Sr.), 2B Tommy Simas (Sr.), RHP Matt Binkle (Sr.), RHP Brent Clinkscales (Sr.), 1B/OF Andrew Shookhoff (Sr.), LHP Bennett Parry (Jr.)
Top newcomers: OF Donovan Dooney (Sr.), LF Brett Thomas (Jr.), SS Steven Holcomb (Jr.), C Austin Wynns (Jr.), C/3B Dillon Dooney (So.), RHP Trevin Lipe (So.), RHP/3B Keegan Yuhl (So.)
At a glance: The Titans lost a good portion of their lineup, but have eight legitimate pitchers. Busick (9-1, 1.56 ERA in 2007) has signed with Stanford, and Leininger has signed with Indiana. Yuhl and Lipe are major additions. Dickerson has signed with Indiana and the speedy Brunansky, who hit .379 last season, has signed with Kansas. Holcomb is a solid defender at short and, along with Simas, gives the Titans a solid middle infield. Thomas gives Poway speed at the top of the lineup. Wynns figues to step in behind the plate.
2. La Costa Canyon
Coach: Justin Machado
2007 record: 16-15, 6-9 (fourth)
Returnees: C Danny Bethea (Sr.), RHP Tyler Korn (Sr.), OF Chris Fasulo (Sr.), 1B Brandyn Delgado (Sr.), 3B Matt Grimshaw (Sr.), SS/2B Garrett Smith (Sr.), OF Mitch Tybroski (Jr.), LHP Jared Henry (Jr.), 2B/3B Zach Gale (Jr.)
Top newcomers: LHP Garrett Hughes (Jr.), LHP Jacob Raffale (Jr.), LHP Max McNabb (So.), SS/2B Phillip Evans (Fr.)
At a glance: Machado feels he has one of his best pitching staffs, with 10 hurlers he has confidence in. The staff includes young lefties Henry, McNabb, Raffale and Hughes, who stands 6-foot-7. Korn figures to be the closer. C Beathea is back to run the show. The speedy Tybroski will hit at the top of the lineup, while Evans and Gale should anchor the middle of the infield.
3. Torrey Pines
Coach: Matt Chess
2007 record: 26-9, 13-2 (first)
Returnees: SS/RHP Kevin Vance (Sr.), OF Ben Hall (Sr.), OF Chase Sheppard (Sr.), 1B Max Iantorno (Sr.), RHP Brad Linn (Sr.), 2B JJ Reading (Jr.), RHP Michael Dmytryk (Jr.), LHP Joey DeNato (So.)
Top newcomers: 3B Zach Taylor (Jr.), RHP Michael Kupfer (Jr.), 1B KC Rogers (Jr.), OF Paul Ounjian (Jr.), OF Evan Mason (So.,), IF Shane Bingham (So.)
At a glance: The Falcons advanced to the CIF title game last season. Vance, who has signed with Connecticut, takes over as Torrey's leader after hitting .369 with 11 doubles and 24 RBIs last season; he was also 4-3 on the mound with a 2.83 ERA. Reading hit .511 with 20 RBIs, while Hall batted .471. DeNato was huge down the stretch as a freshman last season, going 4-1 with a 2.40 ERA.
4. Rancho Bernardo
Coach: Sam Blalock
2007 record: 19-11, 7-8 (third)
Returnees: LHP/OF Jake Field (Sr.), RHP/OF Pat Chohany (Sr.), RF David Ring (Sr.), RHP/IF Tony Valliant (Sr.), 2B Austin Thomas (Sr.), C B.K. Santy (Sr.), OF Wynton Bernard (Sr.), RHP Connor Little (Sr.), 1B Jimmy Dykstra (Jr.)
Top newcomers: C Rusty Desser (Sr.), LHP/OF Ryan Bailey (Sr.), RHP Mitchell Hamels (Sr.), RHP Craig Griffin (Jr.), UTL Austin Muehring (Jr.), C/3B Cody Ray (Jr.), SS Kyle Attl (Jr.), RHP Trevor Williams (So.), LHP/1B Max Homich (Fr.), IF Andrew Daniel (Fr.)
At a glance: The Broncos have some holes to fill, but appear to have the players to fill them. Santy brings some experience behind the plate, while Bernard ---- one of the school's top athletes ---- is ready for a breakout year. Little and Field should anchor the pitching staff.
5. Westview
Coach: Beau Champoux
2007 record: 10-18, 4-11 (tie fifth)
Returnees: RHP Matt Lumm (Sr.), LHP Drake Jaich (Sr.), C/RHP Mike Hachadorian (Sr.), SS/RHP Kyle Collins (Sr.), 2B Caleb Hatcher (Sr.), RF Riley Danford (Sr.), CF Tommy Darcey (Sr.), 3B Reed Ressler (Jr.), 1B Angelo Ciancrocco (Jr.), C Andrew Volk (Sr.)
Top newcomers: RHP Kyle Shaver (Jr.)
At a glance: Picking the Wolverines this low says a lot about the strength of the league, as Westview returns 12 seniors, including seven position players. Hatcher had seven homers last season. Darcey is a talented center fielder, Collins will play at short and will be the team's closer, and Cianfrocco has a beautiful left-handed swing. Hachadorian, a quarterback on the Westview football team, will catch and pitch.
6. Mt. Carmel
Coach: Mike Giaime
2007 record: 15-15, 4-11 (fourth)
Returnees: SS Terrence Buchanan (Sr.), RHP/1B Josh Maxwell (Sr.), 1B/C Ben Vasko (Sr.), OF Jeriel Waller (Sr.), 2B Taylor Chapatte (Sr.), UTL Nick Egan (Sr.), C Kyle McGill (Sr.), RHP Tyler Steffe (Sr.), OF Sam Hoover (Sr.), OF Tyler Kino***a (Sr.)
Top newcomers: RHP Brenden Webb (Sr.), OF Dennis Bowman (Jr.)
At a glance: Giaime, who played for the Sundevils in the mid-1990s and has been a junior varsity and freshman coach for nine years, takes over as Mt. Carmel's head coach. He inherits a load of seniors. Buchanan, who has signed with Cal State San Bernardino, moves from second to short. Vasko, who hit .371, and Waller (.349) are the top offensive threats. Maxwell posted a 1.96 ERA over 57 innings last season.

Mar 15: NC TIMES PREP BASEBALL: Grown-up Hughes looks like an ace for Mavericks
 | | | | TP's Joey DeNato pitches vs LCC-Photo by Hayne Palmour IV |
By TERRY MONAHAN - Staff Writer | Saturday, March 15, 2008 8:00 PM PDT
LA COSTA ---- Garrett Hughes began playing catch in the family driveway as a 4-year-old. Three years later, the tallest kid in class became a pitcher on his first team.
"I saw a lot of guys bailing out against me,' Hughes recalled, laughing. They're still having a tough time against Hughes. In two starts for La Costa Canyon High this season, the junior left-hander has pitched a no-hitter ---- against Great Oak ---- and has not allowed a run.
The 6-foot-7 Hughes gave up only three hits Saturday to Palomar League rival Torrey Pines in a 2-0 victory in the final of the annual Pirate-Falcon Classic. The game was moved from Oceanside to La Costa Canyon because the Pirates' field was flooded.
Not even starting the game an hour late seemed to bother Hughes, who struck out 10 and allowed just one Falcons player to reach scoring position in six innings.
"He didn't give us much to work with,' Torrey Pines coach Matt Chess said. "He pitched real comfortably the whole day. That kid is pretty darn good.'
Hughes improved to 2-0 and kept his ERA spotless. "Garrett throws strikes,' La Costa Canyon coach Justin Machado said. "He has shown incredible composure in just two outings for us. He could have gotten rattled in the sixth inning when they threatened, but he sucked it up and got the final two outs."
After Torrey Pines (6-1) got a one-out double from Benjamin Hall in the sixth, Hughes notched his final strikeout, issued an intentional walk and induced a flyout by sophomore pitcher Joey DeNato to end the threat.
DeNato (1-1) allowed both runs, on Will Swanner's single in the first inning and Mitch Tybroski's triple in the seventh. He gave up seven hits, struck out eight and walked three in 6 1/3 innings. The Mavericks put just five runners in scoring position.
"My guy pitched well enough to win,' Chess said. "He pitched his heart out.'
Hughes was just a bit better for the Mavericks (6-0). He spread out his strikeouts, getting at least one in seven spots in the Torrey Pines batting order. "I just want to get outs,' Hughes said. "Strikeouts are something I'm not trying to get, but they come on good pitches. I'm just trying to get some little ground balls to get outs. I'm fine with the way I get the job done. Strikeouts look nice in the scorebook, but an out is an out to me."
Senior Tyler Korn pitched the final inning for the Mavericks to earn the save, striking out two.
"A lot of people have told me I scare hitters, but I've never had to hit against myself,' Hughes said, smiling at the thought. "So I don't know if that's true.'
