The Minnesota baseball team has signed Alex Tukey to a letter of intent according to Head Coach John Anderson. Tukey will be eligible to pitch for Minnesota in the 2010 season.

Tukey is a 6-4, 160 pound righthander out of Torrey Pines High School in San Diego, Calif. He was named Honorable-Mention All-Conference at Torrey Pines and tied for a team-high with 15 appearances, primarily as a closer, in his senior season. Tukey was part of a Torrey Pines team that finished 22-10 and won the Avocado League with a 12-3 record. He also helped Torrey Pines make the sectional playoffs.

He is the brother of former Golden Gopher swimmer Valerie Tukey, who competed for Minnesota from 2004-08. His parents, Robert and Joan, also are University of Minnesota alumni.

Tukey, who is the first Golden Gopher since Ben Pattee top hail from California since Ben Pattee, joins Minnesota Gatorade Player of the Year Ryan Abrahamson, First-Team All-State honorees David Bettenberg, TJ Oakes and Billy Soule Jr., Second-Team All-State honoree Kyle O'Shea and Kevin Kray as part of the group of incoming freshmen that will join the Golden Gophers next year.

"What really impressed me about Alex (Tukey) was that he was very educated about the recruiting process and knew where he wanted to go from the beginning of the process," said Anderson. "Alex is a pitcher who made great strides during his senior season, and has a chance to come in an contribute right away to our program. We are getting a young man who really wants to be here, and a mature person who is ready to excel on and off the field in this program."

Minnesota Pitching Coach Todd Oakes on Alex Tukey: "Alex has made significant progress as a pitcher in the past year. He has worked very hard to improve himself physically and emotionally on the mound. He made a few starts on a very good high school team in the San Diego area but settled in as the closer for his team this spring. He typically pitches in the 90-94 mph range with an improved breaking ball. Alex is a great match for this program with his pitching ability and potential as well as a very strong academic profile. He has strong family connections with the University of Minnesota and wanted to follow the tradition.  We are very fortunate to add a pitcher of his caliber in the spring signing period."

Alex Tukey on joining the University of Minnesota: "The decision to attend the University of Minnesota was a clear choice for me. I really enjoyed talking to the coaching staff and I got along with the players on the team. It was a group that seemed focused on success both on and off the field, and that fits what I am looking for. I also really enjoyed talking Pitching Coach Todd (Oakes). A lot of his philosophies lined up with my attitude as a player and I look forward to working with him. I am looking forward to getting a good education at Minnesota, and being part of a great program."

Torrey Pines Head Coach Matt Chess on Alex Tukey: "Alex was a bulldog on the mound for us last year, who pitched his best in tough situations for us last year. He is a hard working kid who is a very respectful of others. I am impressed by his high ceiling, and I think we started to see his whole package come together this year. He grew this year from an athletic and maturity standpoint in his senior season. He has a great makeup and a very good foundation to build on as he heads to the college level."

Schneider to play for St. Louis

Baseball-rich San Diego County has for decades produced more than its fair share of "can't miss" prospects.

When Scott Schneider graduated from Torrey Pines in 2006, he was not counted among that group. Not even close.

"I didn't really get much attention in high school," Schneider said. "Nobody thought I'd ever get drafted. I didn't even make the varsity my sophomore year."

Earlier this month, he proved everyone wrong.

Schneider, a converted infielder who emerged as a pitching standout at Div. I St. Mary's College of Moraga, was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 20th round of the June 9 to 11 amateur draft.

Schneider, undersized at 5-foot-10 and overlooked throughout his high school career, said fighting for everything made his draft selection that much more special. He was with family and close friends at his home in Fallbrook when he learned he was drafted.

"I can't even describe what was going through my head," he said. "I was excited, I was happy, I was nervous: it's something I'll never forget, that's for sure."

Schneider was assigned to the Batavia (N.Y.) Muckdogs, the Cardinals' longtime Class-A short-season affiliate in the New York-Pennsylvania League.

Schneider's selection culminated a lifetime journey with an ultimate destination that never readily apparent.

Schneider made the varsity at Torrey Pines as a junior, but hit just .236 (13 for 55) with one extra base hit.

He had a breakout senior year, leading the Falcons to a Palomar League title when he hit .344 (33 for 117) and excelled pitching for the first time in his career, going 2-0 with one save and posting a 1.14 ERA in 24 2/3 innings.

St. Mary's coach Jedd Soto said Schneider's athleticism, attitude and work ethic made him an attractive prospect.

"He's very, very, competitive. It comes across in his demeanor," Soto said. He said Schneider's competitiveness showed in the classroom, "and we thought if he's that competitive in the classroom he's going to carry that out into the field."

Despite barely pitching two dozen innings in high school, St. Mary's coaches were intrigued by Schneider's live arm and he made an immediate impact, splitting playing time between shortstop and pitching his first two years.

He had his best year pitching exclusively as a junior, going 6-4 with a 4.54 ERA in 12 starts.

He excelled academically too, posting a 3.93 GPA his junior year, an especially noteworthy accomplishment because he changed his major from business to pre-med after his sophomore year.

Schneider developed an interest in medicine after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery to repair torn meniscus his sophomore year. His father, Howard, is a retired doctor, and his mother, Karen, is a retired nurse.

"I really liked my surgeon and I realized that's a really rewarding job," Schneider said. "I know how I felt after she helped me."

Schneider's transition to pitching at the college level included developing a slide step to hold on runners and tinkering with his delivery.

"He had a low three quarter (arm) slot which is great for shortstops, but on the mound sometimes the ball flattens out," Soto said. "He worked really on his timing and controlling his front side to where he could get some downward movement and give some depth to his pitches."

Schneider has shown excellent command of four pitches, most notably an above average power slider. He also throws a fastball that tops out at 92 mph, a sinker and a changeup.

His out-pitch is the power slider, which has been clocked at 87 MPH and has been dubbed by teammates the "Schneider Slider."

Schneider believes his lack of pitching experience in high school may have benefited him, noting that many top-flight high school pitchers are overused, throwing up to 80 innings, and resulting in injuries and fatigue.

"I think that helped me a lot," he said. "Fortunately I haven't had any arm issues and that's probably the reason why."

He credits his success in large part to his experience playing for an intensely competitive Falcons program.

"The good thing about Torrey Pines is it's a very competitive school and we played a lot of really good teams," Schneider said. "No matter what level it is you still feel that pressure and that intensity and that's exactly how it is in college as well. That helped me a lot."

It's been a long journey for Jerrud Sabourin, but it's been a successful run for him at Indiana.

Jerrud Sabourin has proved this season that his freshman All-America honors last year were not a fluke.

The University of Arizona took a pass after just one look. One look was all Indiana University baseball coach Tracy Smith needed.

Smith was working a San Diego baseball clinic in December, 2007 when he spotted Jerrud Sabourin. The San Diego native was home for the holidays working with hitting coach Darren Johnson after being cut by the University of Arizona coaching staff following only one day of walk-on tryouts.

"I didn't know what I was going to do," Sabourin says. "I had been communicating with the Arizona coaching staff through emails and they had suggested I come out and try to make the team as a walk-on. The impression I got was I would be a preferred walk-on and I would make the team."

A first baseman/pitcher at national power Torrey Pines High School, Sabourin had hit .390 as a senior with four home runs and 34 runs batted-in. The southpaw had compiled a 6-2 record on the mound with an earned run average of 2.73.

"But when I got to Arizona, they told me I had to come to a tryout with the rest of the walk-ons. What that basically meant was I came out one fall night for a couple of hours with 20 other candidates. We went through fielding drills and a couple of rounds of batting practice and they sent everyone home. It wasn't what I thought it would be.

"That really set me off track and I didn't know what I was going to do. I was stuck at Arizona and I wasn't going to give up my dream of playing Division I baseball. I would ride my bike six miles to a batting cage two or three times a week and I worked with former Arizona coach Jerry Stitt once a week. At that point, I was thinking about going to a junior college, but my mind was still set on playing Division I."

When he went home for the break, he continued to work out with Johnson, a coach at a rival high school. That is when he found out Smith would be coming over to hold a mini-tryout.

"There were about seven or eight of us, the rest being high school seniors," Sabourin says. "We took a couple of rounds of batting practice and took some fielding practice. Coach Smith didn't talk to me much because of NCAA rules, but he did suggest I give it a try at Indiana as a walk-on."

When he went back to Arizona in January, Sabourin withdrew from his classes, packed his bags and flew out to Bloomington. Fortunately, nearly all of the credits he earned transferred to Indiana.

"When I arrived, it was stormy and real cold," he says. "It was kind of shocking getting off that plane. But I had to do this to fulfill my ambition because I really love this game."

Sabourin's first introduction to Indiana baseball was what the coaching staff likes to call "the fun run." But the only people having any fun were the coaches.

"The whole team goes out on the indoor track and runs a bunch of sprints until half the team is puking," the 6-foot-2 Sabourin says. "Since I had been working out in Arizona and managed to stay in pretty good shape, I didn't have much problem with it. I was happy I wasn't one of the guys who puked and I think I made a good impression.

"I was confident I was going to make the team as a walk-on. I was going to beat out anyone who was in my way."

In Indiana's season opener at Louisiana State, the lefty-swinging Sabourin was called on to come off the bench against Golden Spikes candidate Jared Bradford and delivered a run-scoring single up the middle. He also singled to right in his second at-bat during the 7-1 loss. But Sabourin would be in the starting lineup at first base for the remaining 59 games.

"I just kept it going from there," he says. "The next day I got a couple more hits and I was leading the team in average after the first series. Things went pretty well from there."

All Sabourin did in his walk-on season was bat .383, which was second on his team and ninth in the Big Ten. He delivered five home runs with 14 doubles and 53 RBI. He wound up being named to the Freshman All-America squad.

"Freshman All-America was kind of the topping on the cake," he says. "I knew I was seeing the ball well and playing good defense. I looked at my numbers and figured I could get somewhere with those.

"I always knew in my life if I worked hard at something, it would pay off. I had no doubts about my ability and I was prepared. I kept the right mindset because I had played baseball at a high level all my life, so I was used to these situations and I knew I could do it."

It didn't take long for word of Sabourin's success to travel back to San Diego, where he might be considered a Pied Piper of sorts. Another six San Diego-area baseball rats followed him back to Bloomington this year.

"I think I did have an impact on getting more California players to come here," he says. "They saw the success I was having and the fact I was enjoying myself out here. Other coaches around San Diego started recommending players to coach Smith."

On a Hoosiers team loaded with .300 hitters, Sabourin is showing last year was no fluke. He is currently stroking the ball at a .355 clip with four home runs, 28 RBI and a slugging percentage of .507.

"You hear a lot about the brand of baseball being played out West, but the competition in the Big Ten isn't a whole lot different," he says. "There are a lot of good players and teams. The toughest part about it is playing so many games when it's 30-40 degrees. It's a lot harder to hit and see the ball when it's snowing. Those guys playing for those West Coast powerhouses don't know what it's like to not feel your hands."

But as Sabourin has discovered, one man's rejection can be another man's promotion. He couldn't be happier with the way things have turned out.

"I'm glad I made this decision," the sophomore says. "I don't know where I would be without God, coach Stitt, coach Johnson and my parents, who have been very supportive.

"It's kind of surreal how things have happened. I hope to eventually play professional baseball, but I also have med school as a backup plan if baseball doesn't work out."
