Union-Tribune Player of the Year:
Nick Noonan, Francis Parker
Some have questioned just how good this left-handed hitting shortstop really is, considering he feasted primarily on Division IV pitching. But Noonan is rated a gem by those who make a living passing judgment. This four-year varsity standout teed off against nearly every pitcher he faced no matter what level. Noonan, selected 32nd overall by San Francisco in this week's major league draft, broke or tied five San Diego Section records during his senior season. He posted a career .505 batting average with a section-record 67 hits – 40 of which were for extra bases. His 10 triples this season and 20 career three-base hits also are section records. In addition, Noonan established section career bests with 156 RBI and 54 doubles. Speed and fancy footwork have always been part of Noonan's game, evidenced by his better than 95 percent career success rate at stealing bases (105-of-110). Most of those who rank higher than Noonan in the section record book have gone on to play major league baseball. The pride of Francis Parker, who has the option of attending Clemson University on a baseball scholarship or turning pro, someday will be able to look back to his high school career knowing that he was one of the section's all-time best. – BILL DICKENS

Falcons can't break through in title game; Granite Hills beats Torrey thanks to Krause's effort
June 7, 2007 - North County Times
By: JOHN MAFFEI - Staff Writer
SAN DIEGO -- After three straight ho-hum CIF San Diego Section baseball championship games, Wednesday night's Division I game lived up to its billing as Torrey Pines High and Granite Hills hooked up in a classic pitchers' duel.
It wasn't, however, the pitchers everyone expected to see as Torrey Pines went with ace Eric Hillenbrand, but Granite Hills ace Eric Krause gave way to left-hander Travis Hopper. In the end, however, it was Krause working out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning to save a 3-2 Granite Hills victory at San Diego State's Tony Gwynn Stadium.
Wednesday's announced crowd for two games was 3,618. For four championship games over two days, the total attendance was 6,036.
The fireballing Krause entered the game with one run in, one out and three on. He got a strikeout, then retired Jerrud Sabourin on a deep fly to left to work out of trouble.
Torrey Pines catcher Kevin Silvett, who will play at San Diego State next season, touched Krause for his seventh home run of the season -- a long blast to the flag poles in left. The Falcons (26-9) got singles from Michael Dearborn and JJ Reading after Silvett's homer, but Krause, who was 12-1 on the season, was saved by a great play from second baseman Louis Cazares.
In the seventh, TJ Filicia was robbed of extra bases on a brilliant catch by left fielder Tyler Winter. Jerrud Sabourin singled to center with two out, but the game ended when Silvett's bullet to the mound landed in Krause's glove.
"We were geared up to face Krause," said Torrey Pines coach Matt Chess. "It took us a couple of innings to figure out their starter, then they went to Krause. I expected a great game, and it was."
Hillenbrand (11-3) was brilliant. In six innings, he allowed just six hits, two earned runs, walked one and struck out 12. "They got a few breaks," Hillenbrand said. "It seemed like we were an inch away all night. But that's the way baseball works."
Granite Hills (28-5) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when leadoff man Brian Humphries singled to left and went to second on an error. Louis Cazares singled Humphries to third. With one out, Austin Coleman blooped a single over the head of second baseman JJ Reading and in front of diving right fielder Robby Vetter to drive in the run.
The Eagles added to the lead in the third when Humphries reached on an infield error and stole second. Travis Taijeron drew a one-out walk, and with two outs, the left-hand hitting Josh Queriones bounced a ball off the rock-hard infield and over the head of third baseman Michael Dearborn for an RBI single.
Hopper (8-2) retired the first nine batters before Filicia opened the fourth inning with a single to left. But Filicia was picked off. With two outs, Silvett singled to left and hustled to second when the ball was bobbled in the outfield. Kevin Vance, however, grounded to third to end the threat.
"We made a few mistakes, and they capitalized," Chess said. "Their pitchers did a great job. I thought it would be a close game, but I didn't think it would end this way. There were more runs to be had. We didn't get that one hit to drive in a few runs at once. We never had the lead, so it's not like we gave it up at the end. They beat us on a few heartbreak hits.
"Losing is losing. that's baseball."

DIVISION I BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS - Granite Hills escapes jam
By Glae Thien
SPECIAL TO THE UNION-TRIBUNE
June 7, 2007
As a way of saying he was sorry about being benched for disciplinary reasons, Granite Hills senior ace Eric Krause escaped a bases-loaded jam in relief to secure the save in the section Division I championship baseball game. Sophomore Travis Hopper started in place of the Eagles ace before eventually yielding in the fifth inning as Granite Hills topped Torrey Pines 3-2 last night at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The top-seeded Eagles (28-5) closed the season with their 19th victory in 20 games after a game-day decision to bench Krause following a three-day school suspension that concluded on Tuesday.
I'm definitely sorry for what happened, Krause said of his suspension. It was out of my character. I'm not that type of person at all. Coach (James Davis) just wanted me to be here with my team. Winning the championship was the No. 1 goal all season, and we did it.
Second-seeded Torrey Pines (26-10) closed within 2-1 in the fifth and loaded the bases with one out when the call went to Krause, who escaped the jam with a strikeout and flyout.
Coach said, 'Get the ball, You're coming in,' said Krause, who struck out four. That was the best news that I'd heard in days. There was pressure, but I was here as a sophomore, and I have more experience now. I was ready. I took my time and just got it done.
Granite Hills had five players remaining from the 2005 team that fell in the final to Rancho Bernardo. A year ago, the Eagles reached the semifinals.
Hopper, who set down the first nine batters, allowed only an unearned run on three hits in 4 1/3 innings. Oh, it was close, exciting, the biggest game of my life, Hopper said. That's probably my best pitched game ever.
Torrey Pines came up short even though Eric Hillenbrand struck out 12 and allowed two earned runs in pitching a six-hitter.
I expected a great game, and it was, Falcons coach Matt Chess said. We didn't make many mistakes, but they capitalized on them. We had some opportunities with some good hitting but not enough.
In the fifth, Hillenbrand led off with a single and eventually scored on a fielding error. Granite Hills responded in the bottom half with a run-scoring triple by Austin Coleman for his second hit and RBI of the game. Torrey Pines closed with 3-2 on Kelvin Silvett's seventh home run of the season.
Davis made his decision regarding Krause about two hours ahead of the scheduled start. "It's the toughest call I've ever had in my coaching life, Davis said. I talked to many people on staff and many other people throughout San Diego County on the best way to handle things.
Krause won two games and saved the other in Granite Hills' playoff path to the finals.
