Article from Townsville Bulletin 14th March 2011
THEY were battered, bruised, wet and covered head to toe in stinking mud, but there were no complaints from the Tornadoes.
For it just made clinching the Townsville Gridiron Championship all the sweeter.
Two late touchdowns secured the Tornadoes an exciting 36-24 win over the Typhoons at Corcoran Park on Saturday, earning them a piece of history as the inaugural Swamp Bowl champions.
"To think that we'll have our name there to move forward and start a legacy is great," a "stoked" Tornadoes quarterback and captain Daniel White said.
In atrocious conditions that forced kick-off to be slightly delayed, both teams took a while to find their rhythm, but once they did they provided an exciting and seesawing battle that went right down to the wire.
Typhoons led 16-14 at halftime and still had their noses in front 24-22 in the shadows of fulltime.
But, just as it appeared their bash and barge approach would pay off, White unleashed two of his three touchdown passes for the afternoon and wide receivers Kyle Reynolds and Kim Scanlon were only too happy to accept.
"Our team unity was what brought it home, everyone working together and making adjustments," White said. White paid tribute to his side's defence as the Typhoons looked to use sheer size and power to batter their way to triumph.
"They definitely out-muscled us in size, but at the end of the game I think skill and agility and the passing game helped us out," White said. Townsville Gridiron Championship II is set down for an August kick-off, with hopes of adding more sides to the three that played in American Football's 2011 rebirth in the city.
