Soccer Club of Newington

Recreational Soccer Program

Important Note: Jewelry: It is the policy of CJSA, USYSA and the Soccer Club of Newington, that no jewelry shall be worn, while participating in any of the programs of the Soccer Club of Newington. Pierced ear earrings seem to be the area of greatest misunderstanding. Covering the earrings with tape does not make them safe. Please be advised that your child will not be allowed to participate in practices or games unless jewelry is removed. Please plan accordingly when deciding to have your child’s ears pierced, so that the earrings may be removed by the start of the season. Medical Alert Bracelets may be worn but must be taped to the skin.

Fyi: The Recreation Divisions Do not keep scores or standings. The games are played for the children's enjoyment.

Recreational Divisions

Pre-K-

A 6 week program, run in conjunction with the Newington Parks and Recreation Department, designed to stimulate gross-motor skills in children aged 3-5. Program will be held weekly, (Saturday Mornings) and sessions will be led by trained soccer professionals. Sessions will last approximately 45 minutes each. Boys and girls will participate together. Location to be determined each season. Click Here for more Information

Kindergarten Kickers-

An 8 week program for children currently enrolled in Kindergarten. This program will introduce young athletes to the basic skills of soccer in an informal way. Boys and girls will be assigned randomly to mixed teams, of 6-8 children, led by Professional Trainers  (hired by the club utilizing the head coaching format) and parent volunteer coaches and assistant coaches. Twice weekly practice sessions will include 30-45 minutes of instructional/fun time and a short 15 minute scrimmage with another group. Scores are not kept and there are no team standings. Practice nights are Mon and Wed or Tue and Thur. Game play will be in a 3 v 3 or 4 v 4 format on a 20 by 20 yd. field, using small popup goals with no assigned goalkeeper. Soccer skills are developed through fun soccer games and freeplay. This is the format endorsed by USYSA for children aged 4-7. Click Here for more Information

Micro Soccer - Grades 1 and 2

An 8 week program for boys and girls in 1st and 2nd grade. Boys and Girls are randomly assigned into teams (Boys Team/ Girls Team) of 6-8 members.  Parent volunteers, assisted by Professional Trainers hired by the club,  will coach the teams. Teams practice twice weekly for 45 minutes each and play four 12 minute quarters on Saturday mornings. Practice nights are Mon and Wed or Tue and Thur. Location to be determined each season. Game format is 6 v 6 using small 5ft x 5ft goals with an assigned goalkeeper. The beginnings of organized soccer are learned through fun practice activities and freeplay. Scores are not kept and no team standings are maintained.

F-Division – Grades 3 and 4 Separate Boys and Girls Divisions

An 8 week program for boys and girls in grades 3 and 4. Boys and girls are separated into teams of 8-14 players coached by volunteer parents who have attended some type of soccer coaching training. Teams practice twice weekly for 1 hour and play one game per week on Saturday mornings. Practice nights are Mon and Wed or Tue and Thur. Requests for a particular practice night are not generally accepted. Game format is 8v8 with goalkeepers, using 5 ft x 5ft goals on a 30 yd by 20 yd field with a single referee. Throw-ins are used to restart play after the ball has left the field, and all kicks awarded for fouls are indirect (meaning that restarts after fouls cannot be shot directly into the goal). In addition, the offsides law is not enforced, there are no penalty kicks, and players are given a second chance to make a good throw-in. Game play is completed in 4 equal 12 minute quarters. There are no team standings or division champions. Playing time is at least 50% of the game. Referees will enforce the jewelry rule.

Junior Division – Grades 5 and 6 - Seperate Boys Division and Girls Division

An 8 week program for boys and girls in grade 5 and 6. Boys and girls are separated in to teams of 8-14 members led by volunteer coaches who have most likely attended at least two soccer coaching clinics. One hour practices will be held twice weekly on either Mon and Wed, or Tue and Thurs evenings. Practice nights are determined by coach and field availability. Coaches get to pick their practice nights (which is an incentive to become a coach) Game play is 8v8 with designated goalkeepers. Junior division is the first experience with the offsides law and a larger 40 x 60 yd field. FIFA rules are modified to shorten the halves to 30 minutes, and there is no slide tackling, but otherwise the basic rules of soccer are in effect. Individual playing time is at least 50% of the total game time. Games will by officiated by one referee. Due to low participation numbers, there may not be a sufficient number of teams to run a totally in-house program, therefore you should be prepared to travel to games in neighboring towns like Wethersfield, Rocky Hill, Cromwell or New Britain. No Jewelry may be worn, which means no ear-rings, or bracelets Medical Alert Bracelets are permitted but must be taped to the skin.

Senior Division – Grades 7 and 8 Separate Boys Division and Girls Division

An 8 week program for boys and girls in grade 7 and 8. Boys and Girls are separated into teams of 14-16 based on registration numbers. Twice weekly 90 minute practices will be led by parent volunteer coaches, and 11 v 11 games will be played on Saturdays and Sundays. Practice nights are Mon and Wed or Tue and Thur evenings. At this division, there is traditionally insufficient participation to run a totally in-house program, and participants should expect to travel to games in neighboring towns like New Britain, Wethersfield, Rocky Hill, and Cromwell etc. Full 40 min halves will be played and all FIFA rules will be in effect; games will have three officials. Individual playing time is 50% of total game time. The jewelry rule will be enforced strictly.
