Welcome to the Tommy Dowd Memorial Foundation

As a loving husband, adoring father, devoted son, cherished brother and good friend, Tommy Dowd was beloved by those who knew him. When his life was tragically torn away on 9/11, leaving his family, friends and community in deep grief, they vowed to continue his legacy of kindness, in memory of how he lived and what he meant to us all. As part of that, the Monroe Senior Softball League began holding charity Softball Tournaments in 2002. Originally established as a scholarship fund for deserving college bound student athletes in the Monroe-Woodbury area, the Foundation is growing to meet other needs that embody Tommy Dowd’s spirit and dedication to living life to the fullest. To realize those goals, the Board is developing new, year round fund raising activities. The Board of Directors determines deserving male and female scholarship recipients based on information received from the applicants. The Board also seeks ways to address other local causes and issues, including the assistance of military families in need. To date, $25,000 in Scholarships has been awarded to Monroe Woodbury High School students and additional sums have been donated to other worthy causes.

Gilligan's Clam Bar came back from an opening game #1 loss to defeat Tommy D's in 2 straight games to capture the Championship. The final scores were 8-6 and 10-1. Gilligan's also took home the various individual awards with SS Barry Tesseman getting the Defensive Player Award and pitcher James Defelipis the Most Valuable Pitcher. The MVP was given to the entire team for an overall team effort. Tommy D's had been undefeated entering the Championship round but Gilligan's proved to be the hotter team. Congrats to the Captains Table for finishing 4th and earning the Team Sportsmanship Award. River Cats, the 2008 Champs finished 3rd.

1st Annual All Star Challenge Results:

The first annual Tommy Dowd All Star Challenge sponsored by Hecht and Co. PC was held on Saturday August 1st at Smith Clove Park in Monroe. In years past, the committee hosted a home run hitting contest and all star game mixing and matching players from each team. This year, the committee decided to up the ante pitting the Rockland County All Stars vs. the Orange County All Stars. Joe Nardi managed the Rockland All Star team. Joe’s team took home the trophy last year from the tournament so we saw it fitting that he managed one of the two teams.  The Orange County All Star team was led by by none other than Foundation President Greg O’Connor. Greg’s team Tommy D’s/Birchwood Caterers - was the last Orange County team eliminated from the tournament last year and placed 4th.

The Orange team came from behind to defeat the Rockland boys by a 10-9 margin. The game started off as a pitchers duel between Rockland's Cory Davis and Orange's Mike Mancuso. The score was 2-1 after 4 innings with only 3 hits combined by both teams. But in the 5th the game turned as Davis hit a three run Homer. He also added a solo shot in the 7th. Trailing 6-3 entering the bottom half of the 7th inning, game MVP Scotty Morrison led off with a Home Run to close the gap to a 2 runs. Orange closer Nick Sansalone then entered the game in the 8th inning and was hurt by his team's shoddy defense which gave the Rockland team a 9-4 lead. But Orange would not go away as Tim Clark hit a two-run shot and fellow teammate Dave Krawczyk hit a single to plate two more runs and close the gap to a run once again. Sansalone shut down the Rock men in the top of the 9th and the stage was set for the bottom of the 9th dramatics.

Morrison led off with what was thought to be another Home Run but replays showed that his shot hit the top of the fence. So standing on 2nd with no one out, he watch Davis walk the next two batters before John Lawson was able to get an infield single to tie the game. Rad Gonzales then followed with a sac fly to score Anthony Rizzi with the winning run. Dan Welch, who continued his solid Tournament hitting added two hits as he celebrated his 34th birthday. For Rockland, Cory Davis had 3 hits and 4 RBI's and kept the Orange batters off stride most of the game but tired late. Brian Smith had two hits and excelled defensively at SS. The Rockland team was hurt by the absence of star Chris Lemonis who was on special assignment.

The Orange County Team was represented by:

Dave Krawczyk, John Lawson, Scotty Morrison, Timmy Clark, Dave DeGrote, Dan Welch, Anthony Rizzi, Bruce Weyant, Nicky Sansalone,John Murray,Matt Casserly, Ronnie Crover, Rademere Gonzalez, Rob McQuillen and Mike Mancuso.

Some of the players representing the Rockland County squad were:

Brian Smith, Russ Cohen, Henry Villegas, Cory Davis, Mike Clohessy, Sean Baird, Dave Fazalak, Dave Patridge and Bobby Rhino.

The rivalry between the two Counties has grown since a number of the Orange players are from Rockland originally and have mentored and even coached some of these kids. Some of the Orange players, including Papo Rodriguez and O’Connor have been playing longer than most of the Rockland players have been alive.
