Thorn In Our Side
by Rob Turudic
The NBA’s Chicago Bulls and NK Tomislavgrad of the Oakville Premier League have shared similar successes throughout their history. Both franchises have won multiple championships, both have had record setting regular season runs, both have produced hall of fame players and both have had a thorn in their side. The Bulls had the Raptors, a then expansion franchise who always seemed to save their best for the best. NK Tomilsvgrad’s nemesis has proven to be Liverpool, the basement dwellers of the premier league. NKTG went into Wednesday night’s encounter having drawn 1-1 in their earlier meeting, Liverpool’s first points of the season. It was the same Liverpool who had knocked off NKTG’s B-team, NK Monahan’s, in last seasons playoffs.
The match began promising for TG as early pressure resulted in an early goal from their latest signing, Leo Marasovic. The early tally proved costly as Tomislavgrad seemed content to sit on their lead. With the TG defence on their heels, Liverpool’s tenacity paid off as they levelled the match at one. With nothing to lose, Liverpool continued to press and soon after took an outrageous lead with their second of the game. Having put out one of their best line-ups in sometime, Tomislavgrad seemed stunned and amazed at what had transpired. As halftime approached, Liverpool struck once again against the run of play, taking a 3-1 lead into the half.
Facing a two goal deficit as the second half began, things went from bad to worse for NK Tomislavgrad. Liverpool’s fourth of the game was one for the ages, a sublime strike that put them ahead 4-1. Pressed for time, Tomislavgrad once again faced the prospect of dropping points against the OPL’s worst. A wave of pressure ensued on the Liverpool goal and it did not take long to cut the lead in half as Milan Uzelac netted TG’s second of the game. The onslaught continued, as Leo Marasovic put away the third, his second of the night. Down 4-3 and with the clock against them, Nick “The Protractor” Knez tied the game at four with a powerfully angled drive. When the final whistle blew, another two points were dropped by TG, a potentially costly slip up as they chase NK Hrvatski Vitez for first place.
Can NK Tomislavgrad get things back on track? Find out on Wednesday March 16, 2005 as they take on the Mississauga Falcons at 8:30pm.
