A Year in the Making
Rob Turudic

Having waited almost an entire year for this moment, NK Tomislavgrad went into Wednesday night’s game against Oakville’s Finest looking for sweet revenge. Revenge for the only loss in franchise history, a loss which cut through the heart of the team as it came in last years championship final ending the clubs historic run.

Finest entered the game with many fresh faces of their own. The one constant that remained was their speed and youth, a quality that TG knew all too well. The game started off as classic heavyweight bout, with both clubs feeling each other out before landing a decisive blow. It was the four-time champs, who, with their battle tested veteran line-up, landed one square on the chin of the Finest. Tomislavgrad’s own golden boy, Milan Uzelac, put the southerners out front 1-0 with a finally placed drive from just outside the box.

With the lead in hand, TG began to dictate the pace of the game, at times frustrating their opponents. Finest did not back down from the challenge and used their speed to create quality scoring chances. If not for the stand-out goalkeeping of Rob Biturajac the score could have very easily been 1-1. JJ Grubisic was denied on a few of his own attempts by the Finest keeper as the half drew to a close with Tomislavgrad holding on to their 1-0 lead.

TG began the second half looking sluggish and tight, lacking the crispness that was evident in the first 25 minutes. Finest had TG on their heels in the opening moments, narrowly missing on their goal attempts. As the minutes ticked away, Tomislavgrad’s line of defence cracked under the pressure and Finest netted the equaliser they were desperately looking for. With all to play for, both teams threw everything they had at each other. The two sides took turns trading shots trying to knock the other one out. There would be no knockout blow in this one, when the final whistle blew we had a draw.

NK Tomislavgrad continues its campaign on Wednesday November 3, 2004 at 10:20pm against the expansion Toronto Torcida.
