Return Of The Kings
(TURUDIC) Wednesday’s premier of the Lord of Rings, “The Return on the King”, was overshadowed only by the highly anticipated derby between NK Tomislavgrad and Karlovac United. Heading into the battle for middle earth, NKTG would be without three regulars in Mario Kuliš, Al Perin and JJ Grubisic. Unexpectedly, Ivan Grubisic was absent for the opening half, a victim of the Lord of the Rings extravaganza. Apparently Cousin Ive did not believe that the movie was actually three and half hours long. Looking across the field, Karlovac had every reason to be confident that they could administer TG’s first defeat.
With the first half no more than a couple of minutes old, it was Karlovac United who had the first threat on goal as Mike Domjancic rifled a shot on goal only to have TG keeper Rob Biturajac tip it off the bar. George Andric returned to the TG line up following his spell on loan with Dinamo Minsk in Belarus. Alongside Kory Jazbec, the duo controlled the tempo throughout the first half reeking havoc on the Karlovac defence. The chances soon came fast and furious for TG as it was first Tomislav Bilic driving a shot off Karlovac keeper Frank Perin. Ivan Kulis would soon follow nailing one off the crossbar capping off a flurry of activity in the Karlovac zone. The reward would soon come for NKTG as Kory Jazbec hit a lazy looking shot off the diving hands of the Karlovackian keeper and into the net for his 12th of the season putting TG out front 1-0. Frustrated with themselves and each other, NK Karlovac headed into the break down a goal to the champs.
With 25 minutes standing between them and their brandy, NK Tomislavgrad looked composed and focused at the task at hand. Karlovac needed to do what they had been unable to thus far, score a goal. Scoreless in 75 minutes and counting against NKTG, they threw what they could at the TG defence. Things turned sour for the northerners as Kory Jazbec drove in his second of the game past a screened and motionless Frank Perin. Down 2-0 and with time running out, Karlovac United needed to dig deep to pull this one out. Even with the Karlovac keeper joining in on the rush, there were no serious threats on the TG goal in the second half. When the final whistle blew, NK Tomislavgrad kept the streak in tact with what may have been the most complete team effort in franchise history.
The celebrations continued into the showers as Christmas carols were heard echoing through the halls of the Oakville Sports Centre. The 3rd annual NKTG Christmas party followed at Monaghan’s and will go down as quite possibly the greatest ever. Words to describe it cannot do it justice as it was one of those events you just had to be at. NK Tomislavgrad heads into the Christmas break in familiar territory, first, undefeated and the best group of drinkers/singers/soccer players ever assembled.
