TOMCATS - story appeared in the Sports Xpress magazine

Tucked away in the back of Pinafore Park in St. Thomas is a gem of a baseball field. Emslie Field is one of a few true baseball parks left in Ontario , and it surely is worth the trip to St. Thomas and through Pinafore Park . Many first time visitors to Emslie Field, including this writer, have wondered halfway through the park if they were in fact given correct directions, but once inside the gates of the baseball park a beautiful surprise awaits the true baseball fan.

This season the St. Thomas Tomcats are promising to provide some exciting baseball, giving the trip to Pinafore Park even more value.  Tomcats’ new head coach Trevor Greenway is very optimistic when he talks about his new club’s chances in the Junior Intercounty loop this year “We are very excited about the upcoming season.  We have a number of players who have verbally committed their intention to play for the Tomcats, and we have had weekly workouts at Centrefield Sports for our local players looking to tryout.  The talent level has the coaching staff genuinely excited about what we may be able to accomplish this coming season.    As is the goal with any season, eliminations and a Jr. Intercounty championship are the ultimate goal.”

“This year's team is potentially young, but will be led by third year players Mitch Roy, Mick Daniels, David Wydeven, and Dylan Little who will all provide excellent leadership for what should be an extremely talented team,” says Greenway.

Mitch Roy and Mick Daniels are two local St. Thomas players who are expected to be leaders on the Tomcats team. Daniels who is currently attending Texas A&M International in Laredo , Texas , had some comments on the new head coach and the 2011 Tomcats. “I think there is a very positive vibe with the players on the team because a lot of them have already played for Trevor with the Badgers. He also has played baseball at a very high level, so he brings a lot of experience and knowledge.”

Mitch Roy who is attending Alderson-Broaddus College in West Virginia , explained what it is like for a St. Thomas native to play for the Tomcats, “I can't begin to describe what it means to me to be a Tomcat. When you grow up a baseball player in St. Thomas , you grow up watching the Tomcats. To be able to put the uniform on is an incredible feeling. I have a lot of history with St. Thomas baseball. My cousins played for the Tomcats, and my father, uncle and grandfather all played for the St. Thomas Elgins in the Senior IBL.  Being able to play on the same field as them is very special to me.

Some final words from coach Greenway about what visitors to Emslie Field on Friday and Sunday nights this summer can expect. “Our pitching staff is unbelievably deep, and our defense should be very strong.  Those factors coupled with timely hitting, and what could be a powerful batting order, should make for some entertaining games.”

TOMCATS NAME TREVOR GREENWAY AS HEAD COACH FOR 2011 SEASON

The St. Thomas Tomcats, the London and District Baseball Association’s representative in the Junior InterCounty League, have named a new head coach for the 2011 season.

Trevor Greenway will be making the move from being London Midget Badgers and Western Mustangs assistant coach to becoming the Head Coach of the St. Thomas Tomcats.  The Tomcats have a rich history of playing in the Junior InterCounty League and Greenway intends to guide the Tomcats in a direction that will see that tradition continue and flourish. “I am very excited to have been named the new manager of the St. Thomas Tomcats.  The team has such a rich history, and is so well supported by the city of St. Thomas. It is an honour to have a role in continuing its great tradition.” says Greenway.

Trevor explained his coaching philosophy and what he would like to bring to the Tomcats, “My coaching philosophy is mainly to create an atmosphere that is based on respect for the game, your teammates, and coaches. As long as each player is playing with 100% effort, that is all I ask. Physical mistakes are to be expected, but mental mistakes can be avoided. I want my team to understand the game, and most of all, enjoy the game.”

Greenway is a Tomcat graduate, having played under former manager Rob delaPenotiere.  He is also a product of the Southwest London Minor Baseball Association and has coached and played with both the London Badgers and Western Mustangs.

Trevor had some final thoughts about his background and the challenge ahead, “.  I have had the pleasure of working with a number of great coaches over the years, namely Mike Lumley, who has let me be my own coach, and who has provided me with the opportunity to learn from him as well as develop my own ideas.  I've had the opportunity to coach my own teams and work with Mike, and I look forward to this challenge of working with elite ball players, many of which I have coached in the past already.”

The 2011 season shows great promise for the St. Thomas Tomcats and their new field boss as they work to create a solid platform that will attract the very best junior aged baseball players in this area and continue the Tomcats storied tradition which includes winning a bronze medal at the Baseball Canada Junior Championships in 2006 and nine Baseball Ontario championships dating back to the Junior 'B' title in 1959.

Players wishing to tryout for the St. Thomas Tomcats for the 2011 season may contact Trevor Greenway at trevor.greenway@federated.ca
