The 2009 Adult Softball Season:

The updated 2009 Town Regulations are now posted.
2009 Fall Season New Rule Changes
1. Women's league bases will be set at 65 feet. Men's league bases will remain at 70 feet.
2. Teams must have nine (9) players to start a game, and may list up to 13 batters in the batting order.
2009 Town of Brookhaven Rule Changes
1. The safety base rule has been changed to conform to the USSSA rule book. This makes the play a live ball appeal
instead of an automatic out. It is handled as if the batter/runner missed first base entirely; the defense must appeal to
the umpires and then tag either the runner or the bag.
2. Registration Cards must be on file in the Softball Office for managers and assistant managers (one each per team).
Only people properly registered will be allowed on the playing field or in the bench area. Managers and assistants who are
also players need only file one Registration Card. However, they must be listed on the Roster Form as the Manager or Assistant
and must also be listed as a player. Only players will be allowed in the batting order.
3. If a players eligibility is challenged at the field, that player must produce Photo I.D. and the challenged players
manager must fill out and sign a challenge card. If either requirement is not met, the game is forfeited. If both requirements
are met, the game continues and any further action or penalty will be decided by the Softball Office.
4. Players with a physical disability may apply in writing to the Softball Office for a permanent courtesy batter/runner waiver.
In this situation, the player who is used as the waiver runner or batter will be the player who was the last recorded out. The waiver
runner is not considered a courtesy runner. The runner who is running for the batter from home plate must start from a position directly
behind the home plate umpire.
2009 USSSA Rules Changes
Rule 8, Sec. 5, K When a member of the Offensive Team or their equipment causes a blocked ball:
The infraction constitutes interference. The ball is dead and the most advanced runner is called out.
All runners will return to the last base touched.
Rule 9, Sec. 3 The Ball is dead and not in play:
M. When an Offensive Team Member or their equipment causes interference.
USSSA is also requiring strict enforcement of the existing rule:
Rule 8, Sec. 7 Base Runners are entitled to advance without liability to be put out:
F. When a ball is live after a batted ball and is overthrown into foul territory and is blocked.
EFFECT. In all cases, when a blocked ball occurs on an overthrown live ball, the ball is immediately dead.
Each and every Base Runner is awarded two bases from the last base occupied, unless required to retouch.
Intent:
In order to keep the playing area free of extraneous people and equipment, penalties will be enforced.
Interpretation:
Equipment left on the field by the Defensive Team that is touched by a live ball will be treated the same as if the
throw had gone out of play. Each runner will be awarded two bases. A live ball that touches Offensive Team Equipment
or Players in foul territory will immediately become a dead ball, the runner closest to home will be ruled out, and
all other runners must return to their last base.

BROOKHAVEN TOWN SOFTBALL
The green glistens and the brown swirls in the early morn,
The white is clean and the orange is a shock as the day is born.
Trees encove this sanctuary of play where no one is forlorn,
The switch is thrown and power encompasses
The color is a pale shade of corn.
Prints appear on the ground all around which represents future memories,
Only the goal that is to be reached is what every member sees.
Contrasting against the hazy air are colors before these bare arms that refuse to freeze,
and impassioned grunt from a man in red begins the game that aims to please.
