RAGE/BRIGHTON SOFTBALL SLUGGER SIGNS SCHOLARSHIP
November 15, 2006
Brighton's Amber Hayes has a problem when she is at the plate during practice. She hits the ball too far. Hayes hit so many homers, in fact, during practice last season that her coach and teammates made her go over the fence and pick them up herself.
"She will hit 25 or 30 out during every practice," her softball coach Robin Jacobs said. "No one wants to stay that long so she has to do it herself."
Hayes' home run power may have caused her to stay longer during practice last season, but her talents at the plate also helped her earn a scholarship to play softball for the University of Tennessee at Martin.
Hayes, a shortstop, signed her letter of intent to play for the Skyhawks on Wednesday at the library of Brighton High School. She said she is looking forward to playing at the next level. "I made my decision to go there about two months ago. It was a really nice campus in a small town just like Brighton," she said.
As a junior last season, Hayes was named to the Class AAA all-state team as she batted .421 with 10 home runs. Hayes is the first player in the history of the Brighton softball program to sign a Division 1 scholarship. "She has worked for it, and she has earned what she got. We are very proud of her," Jacobs said. "Her competitiveness is unmatched. A lot of people mistake her competitiveness with being a bad attitude, but she doesn't like to lose."
Jacobs said he sees even bigger things from Hayes during her senior season this spring where Hayes also is expected to see more duties as a pitcher. Brighton finished last season with a 31-8 record and advanced to the substate of the playoffs.
"We are going to expect a lot out of her this year," Jacobs said. "She has won a lot of games for us by hitting home runs or making a big play at defense."
Hayes' father, who got her started in the game, passed away this summer from heart failure.
"I know that he would be very proud of me today," Hayes said. "He used to play baseball when he was younger, and I wanted to be just like him."

Fastpitch Rules!
We believe in softball. Where the ball isn't soft and neither are the players.
We believe in taking the extra base and never going in standing up! Our teammates are everything to us!
Pitching & Fielding + Hitting = SUCCESS
Forget the coin toss, let's wrestle for home team.
If winning isn't everything, then we don't want to play. Leave the bunts at home. Hit the ball or hit the road. We don't play with dolls and we don't jump rope.
Why do we play this game, what fuels our fire, it's simple . . . . .
WE LOVE THE GAME!
Got a Minute?
Sign our guestbook and say hi!
