Providence Journal Sports Writer, Carolyn Thornton, covered the 2014 Pesky Peckham Tournament.
Tiverton Little League completed a triple play of sorts at its 13th annual Pesky Peckham Scholarship Tournament, as the organization honored the memory of one of its longtime volunteers and provided a financial boost to four of its former players who are now going on to college, while hosting a fun 9-and-under baseball tournament. The invitational, which has grown from two teams to 16, was established in 2002 in memory of Pesky Peckham, a longtime coach and manager for Tiverton Little League, who died at 64 after an illness. “Several of Pesky’s family members, including sons, daughters and grandchildren, are active participants and volunteers in Tiverton Little League and other Tiverton youth sports,” said league vice president Tom Perella. “Over the years, teams have come from a wide variety of towns, including as far away as Holland, Pa.,” he added. “The Pesky Tournament, which is characterized by a spirit of fun and originality, has become a “must” event yearly for several R.I. and Mass. towns.” Proceeds from the event support a scholarship fund for graduating Tiverton high school seniors who participated in the town’s baseball and softball programs. This year’s scholarship recipients are Sarah Barboza, Wyatt Nolan, Avery Pacheco and Eli Roeske.
