Red Sox Majors 2004 Champs
In a high-scoring thriller, the Red Sox overcame an early deficit to defeat the regular season champion Diamondbacks 18 – 15 for the Tiverton Majors Softball Championship at Town Farm last Thursday night. The Red Sox started the game off with a bang as Samantha Rogers banged a line drive home run to right center field, her first of two home runs, to lead off the top of the 1st inning. Leigh Hovanec followed a Rachel Lynch walk with a booming triple to left field to put the Red Sox ahead 2 – 0. The Diamondbacks responded with 4 runs in their half of the 1st to take a 4 – 2 lead. Both teams plated 5 runs in the 2nd inning to give the Diamondbacks a 9 – 7 lead but that was the last lead the D-Backs would have in the game. The Red Sox scored 4 runs in the top half of the 3rd and held the D-Backs to 2 to tie the game at 11-all entering the 4th inning. The Red Sox changed pitchers entering the 4th inning with Rachel Lynch coming in from shortstop. She proceeded to hold the Diamondbacks to 4 runs over the next 3 innings. The Diamondbacks refused to give up without a fight as they had the bases loaded in the bottom of the 6th inning but Rachel was able to strike out the side to preserve the Championship. For the Red Sox, Sam Rogers had two home runs, a double and a triple with 10 runs batted in to lead the way. Leigh Hovanec and Rachel Lynch each had 3 hits and Kaleigh Cordeira and Elizabeth Janick had three runs scored each. For the Diamondbacks, Samantha Kulpa, Kelly Williamson, Lauren Tavares and Noel Ingalls each had two hits. Taylor Flynn and Stacy Ferreira of the Red Sox and Andrea Dupont and Nicole Vaillancourt of the Diamondbacks turned in strong defensive plays. The Red Sox reached the finals via a 16 – 13 victory over the Cubs with Sam Rogers and Taylor Flynn leading the way in that victory.
