2/27-3/1 State Tournament Results
Our guys did a great job at this weekends State Tournament. Thanks to all of the parents and teammates who came out to support our 5 state qualifiers
114lbs Joe Penaifel
2 wins and 2 losses, finished tied for the 7th/8th.
Joe lost his first match 4-2 to Freddie Carsio a senior from South Miami (who went on to place 2nd in the tournament). Joe then dominated Rashan Wallace of Cypress Bay 12-2, scoring 1 team point for advancing and 1 team point for the major decison. Next Joe defeated Rob Rinker from Tamp Riverview 7-5 before falling to Alex Brown of Sarasota 6-1.
137lbs Matt Farwick
0-2
Matt had a tough draw facing defending state champion Matt Browning of Martin County in the first round. Farwick put in a great effort countering 90% of Brownings attacks and refusing to yield near fall points in the 6-3 loss. Next round Matt wrestled Mitch Li from Mcarthur after a slow start Matt came on to hit a reversal just after the buzzer for no points losing 2-0.
147lbs Chris Gosselin
1 win and 2 losses.
Chris lost his first match Denys Ribot from South West Miami 7-3. Then he destroyed Brian Cordova from Cooper City leading 7-0 when he pinned him in 1:52.
That scored 1 point for advancing and 2 bonus points for the pin. He then faced season long rival John Mendoza from University (who placed 4th). Leading 2-0 in the third period Chris gave up tough fought near fall points and lost 4-2.
173lbs Josh Freemyer 2-2
2 wins and 2 losses, finished tied for the 7th/8th.
All I can say is WOW, we had some exciting matches with Josh this weekend. In the first round facing Regional Champion Jonathon Lucas of South Dade, Josh was on the attack while trailing 1-0 in the match when Lucas called for an injury, after the timeout..... I mean injury break Lucas scored on a couple of shots to win 6-3. The next match was against Mike Rodgriuez of North Miami Beach where Josh tied the match and the buzzer to send it to overtime, Then after 1 minute of scoreless action on their feet Rodriguez (scoring the first points of the match) was offered choice of top or bottom in the 30 second and went down. Josh countered all of his attempts to score off of the bottom and won the match with a 4-4 2ot criteria decision victory.
Next match was against Jose Terraza from American Hialeah, Josh was flat on the mat trailing 4-2 with 10 seconds left when he exploded out from the bottom to get the escapre and takedown to win by 1 at the buzzer. The next round was against Sam Cartegane from Edgewater. It was tied up 2-2 when Cartagana (who placed 4th) took josh down with 15 seconds left Josh got the escape and began looking for the takedown but Cartagena defended to defend his 4-3 lead at the end of the match.
HWT Beau Tooley
2 wins and 2 losses, finished tied for the 7th/8th.
In the first round Beau defeated Maurice Charles (who went on to place 3rd in the state) from Carol City with a takedown in overtime. He then faced Robbie Groove of Palm Beach Garden, whop scored the decisive points on a shot in the second period to win 3-2. Beau then Dominated Anthony Collins of Coral Reef 6-0 to set up
Tooley-Tanner 6. After giving up a 5 point move Beau battled back in the third period scoring a few impressive takedowns, but Tanner did what he had to do to avoid going to his back to give Beau the big points needed to close the gap. Tanner won 12-6 and went on to place 4th in the state.
At the end of our second season we have managed to jump into the the mix with
the top programs in the area. This was only possible with the great commitment made by all of you. With another strong over season
we will be one of the top teams in the state next season.

2003 Club Season
2003 CADET AND JUNIOR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Five of our returning wrestlers (Wes Mallinger, Joe Penafiel, Keith Saunders, Chris Gosselin and Aaron Round)attended a week long training camp and competed in this event in Fargo, North Dakota in preparation for the upcoming season. Joe Penafiel came one match from the All American Rounds in the Junior Division.
2003 JUNIOR NATIONAL DUALS
Joe Penafiel and Josh Freemeyer have finished their grueling 5 days of competition at the Junior National Duals in Oklahoma today. Team Florida placed 3rd in the nation out of 26 teams in the Greco Roman competition earning them All American honors. With a banged up lineup Team Florida didn't fare as well in Freestyle but the experience they acquired is priceless. Against some of the best 16-19 year old athletes in the country Penafiel compiled an 8-4 record with 2 pins and a technical fall at 112lbs/119lbs while Freemyer finished up 5-10 with 2 pins at 189lbs.
