DUSTIN TO WRESTLE AT APPALACHIAN STATE

Olympia’s standout Heavyweight Dustin Heiser will wrestle on scholarship at Appalachian State University next season. Dustin posted a record of 40-2 this year while placing second at the 3A FHSAA state tournament for the second year in a row. He was named the Orlando Sentinel's Orange County’s Wrestler of the Year and was also member of their All-Central Florida Wrestling team.

Dustin finished his high school career with a record of 131-31. He was a three time state qualifier and a two time state place winner. Earlier this month, Heiser competed in the NHSCAA Senior National Wrestling tournament at Virginia Beach. The Appalachian State Mountaineers are a Division I wrestling program that competes in the Southern Conference (SoCon).

2/20/08

As most of you know, we finished our season last weekend with a 7th place finish at the FHSAA 3a State Tournament in Lakeland. It was a great all around effort by all 6 of our state qualifiers and the 4th year in a row we have finished in 7th place!.

I want to thank everyone who made this season successful. We have developed a reputation for having a wrestling program that is second to none. This would not be possible without the work you all have done. I am honored to be affiliated with such a great group of people. Thank you for letting me coach your sons. Below is a summary of individual results….. Info on the banquet will be coming soon.

Dustin Heiser (40-2) finished Runner Up at 285 pounds for the second year in a row. He defeated some very tough opponents in order to reach the finals including previously undefeated Alex Donelli who was 44-0 until he met Dustin. Dustin finished his high school career with a record of 135-30.

Justin Coocen (35-11) also earned a medal in Lakeland by finishing 4th at 135 pounds. Justin avenged a loss from a week earlier against Oviedo’s Chase Gordon to place.

Jeremy Stickland (33-11) went 1-2 in Lakeland. Jeremy is only a sophomore and we are very excited about his future as a titan.

Dylan Ykimoff (32-11) came a match away from placing at the tourney and beat some very tough competition along the way. Dylan executed a beautiful 5 point throw against three time state champion Rat Williams in the first round.

Mike Wallace (8-5) deserves tremendous recognition for what he accomplished this season. Despite suffering a major injury in his first match of the year, Mike came back to finish as a Metro finalist, District champion, and a state qualifier!

Chris Cox (36-15)suffered an injury out of bounds in his first match. He finished his matches anyway and his efforts were appreciated by all who watched. Chris finished his career as part of an elite group of Titan wrestlers who qualified for the state meet 2 times.

The Titans finished the dual meet season last night with Senior Night and a big 58-15 win over Cypress Creek! It was a solid team effort highlighted by the Titans winning 11 of 14 matches.

Our seniors are Billy Hernandez (215 lbs), Graden Willard (189 lbs), Joey Cofrancesco (130lbs), Chris Cox (160lbs), Jon Lampkins (171 lbs), Mike Wallace (152 lbs), Justin Coocen (135 lbs), Dustin Hesier (285 lbs), and Kevin Potts (135 lbs). Special thanks to everyone who came out last night to support the boys.    Our final dual meet record on the year is 11-6.

We are now preparing to enter the post season phase of our season. This weekend we travel to Lake Mary for the Tournament of Champions. In two weeks we will host the Metro Conference meet here at Olympia. Thanks for reading and taking an interest in our team. Below are a list of individual records on the season….

Special thanks to all those of you who were there to support our team.

I am very proud of our boys and the way they wrestled over the weekend. Tomorrow we will take on Dr. Phillips for the annual “Battle of the Belt”. The match is at Dr. Phillips with JV’s starting at 6:30 and Varsity to immediately follow.

Last night we defeated Edgewater 39-30 to improve our record to 5-1 on the year. It was a very solid team effort throughout. Joey Cofrancesco turned in the performance of the night by beating Hugo Espinosa in a thrilling one point match. I’d also like to commend all of our wrestlers from 140-215 who wrestled up a weight class to help insure a team victory.

The JV’s fought hard last evening as well but came up a bit short in the team score. Joey Alarie, Cameron Heiners, Brandon Dickerson, Brian Pacheco, and Harrison Mathis all won their matches. Nice job young guys!

This weekend we travel to Osceola for the Kowboy Kup for what promises to be a very tough tournament. I’ll send an email with more info on that later today.

Last Saturday, we took our team into the Lake Howell duals missing several of our starters and still had an excellent showing! Our team went 4-1 with the only loss coming to returning 1A State Champions Palmetto Ridge. I am very proud of the way our young men responded to a less than favorable set of circumstances.

The highlight of the day was defeating regional foe Winter Springs in a very tight 42-39 match. Our veterans stepped up by getting bonus points where we needed them which enabled us to win the match. We should all be very proud of these boys for finding a way to win this match. It was very exciting to be a part of that contest.

Special recognition goes out to several of our JV wrestlers who stepped up in a big way. Many of these boys were seeing their first varsity action and responded admirably.    Bobby Newton, Dylan Heroian, Chris Costello, Steve Schreckengost, Richard Vargas, Cameron Heiners, Brian Pacheco, and Owen Pryor all did an excellent job.

I'd also like to commend Jeremy Strickland, Joey Cofrancesco, Dylan Ykimoff, Justin Coocen, Kevin Potts, Peter Fasano and Chris Cox for their efforts. These boys faced some fierce competition against a nationally ranked Palmetto Ridge team and fought valiantly in their matches.

Justin Coocen was named the Outstanding Wrestler for Olympia High school yesterday for his 5-0 record. He and Joey CoFrancesco were our only 2 wrestlers to come away with undefeated records.

Below are the results.........

Several Titans have been working hard on becoming better wrestlers over the summer……

Kevin Potts, Mike Wallace, Justin Coocen, Joey Cofrancesco, Owen Pryor, Harrison Mathis, and Cameron Heiners all attended the Florida Pride camp in Lakeland last week.   Those who attended had an opportunity to receive some quality instruction from “Mean Gene” Mills and wrestle with some of the toughest competition in Florida at all 3 classifications.

Kevin Potts, Justin Coocen, Mike Wallace, Gaige Goll and Dylan Ykimoff attended the Brendan Buckley technique camp at Osceola earlier in June.

Kevin Potts, Justin Coocen, Mike Wallace, and Chris Cox attended NCAA Champion Paul Donahoe’s technique Camp at Winter Springs. Those who attended had an opportunity to wrestle live with an NCAA champion as well as receive some top notch technical instruction!

Mike Wallace and Peter Fasano are currently attending Rob Waller’s All American wrestling camp at Douglas High School in Ft. Lauderdale.

Joey CoFrancesco attended Olympic team member Ken Chertow’s Gold Medal training camp earlier in the month of June at Stetson University in DeLand.

Dustin Heiser, Donnie Bartolomuci, Joey Alarie, Steven Schreckengost, Harrison Mathis, Josh Fletcher, and Mike Wallace have been working very hard in the Olympia football summer conditioning program in preparation for the upcoming football season. We wish them both the best of luck on the upcoming football season.

I'd like to congratulate all of these young men for their efforts this summer. Their hard work will pay off tremendously during the upcoming wrestling season.

2006-2007 RESULTS

2/19/07

This past weekend Coach Thomas and I took our wrestling team to compete in Lakeland for the 3A State Championships where we had our best showing ever by scoring 67 team points and placing 7th out of 85 participating teams! We were only 2.5 points away from being top 5.

Individual accomplishments for the weekend were awesome..... Joe DeLisle won the state championship at 215 lbs. by defeating Columbus' Christian Levia who had a record of 53-1 going into his match with Joe. Delisle but Levia on his back about 30 seconds into the match and the place went totally crazy. Even though Levia was the heavy favorite he was unable to bounce back from the 5 point defecit and Joe became Olympia's second state champion in school history.

Jr. Dustin Heiser also made it to the finals but was defeated by Hialeah's Omar Perez in a very tight match. Dustin placed second at the 285 pound weight class. Saturday was the first time Olympia had 2 wrestlers wrestling in the finals at the state tournament.

Andrew Larson finished an amazing high school career at Olympia by placing 3rd at the 130 pound weight class. Andrew's only loss came to a returning state champion from Lakeland who recently moved in from Nebraska. Andrew finishes as Olympia's all time win leader with 138.

Chris Cox and Dylan Ykimoff also had good showings at lakeland as Chris went 1-2 at 160 pounds and Dylan finished with one win and one loss at 112 pounds.

I am very proud of the efforts these young men put forth this season and ask that you give them a word of congratulations if you have the opportunity. Results from the weekend were as follows..........

This past weekend, our team finished 2nd out of 13 teams at the Metro Conference tournament.   The highlight of the weekend was the fact that we had more wrestlers place in the top 4 than any other school with a total of 10 . Also, Andrew Larson was named "Outstanding Lightweight Wrestler" for the 3rd time this season.

1/25/07

Last night, our team finished up the regular season with a 66-6 win over the Florida Air Academy. It was a solid all around team effort that allowed for the lopsided victory and was a great way for our seniors to finish up at home.

1/1/07

Happy New Year!!!! This past weekend the Titans logged a top 10 finish in what many have referred to as the toughest wrestling tournament in the history of Florida Wrestling. Seven states were represented and several team state champions were also present.

We had five wrestlers place at the Zac Jarzynka Ironman memorial tournamnet......

Kevin Potts (17-6)   placed 7th at 125

Andrew Larson (18-1)   placed 2nd at 130

Chris Cox (12-10)   placed 6th at 160

Joe Delisle (18-2)   was 4th at 215

Dustin Heiser (11-2)   was champion at Heavyweight

Behind Oviedo, we finished ahead of every other team in Central Florida. We also had two wrestlers in the finals.   We were the only area team to have a champion other than Oviedo as well.

This past weekend the Titans finished 2nd out of twelve teams at Osceola's Kowboy Kup. The team highlight came Saturday morning when we defeated St. Cloud (5th ranked in the state) 39-25. This was only the second time Olympia has beaten the Bulldogs in our 6 year history.

We came up short of taking home the team championship with a hard fought 43-27 loss to the 4th ranked Osceola Kowboys Saturday night. Nonetheless, it was an overall impressive effort from our boys this weekend and I am very proud of them. Our current dual meet record is 9-1.

Special thanks to everyone who helped out on Friday and Saturday and to those of you showed up to support the team. This weekend we will travel to Lyman for the 34th annual Lyman Christmas tournament.

SUMMER UPDATE...............

Several Titans have been working hard on becoming better wrestlers over the summer……

Andrew Larson, Clinton Curtis, Kevin Potts, Peter Fasano, and Mike Wallace all attended the Florida Pride camp in Lakeland in June. Those who attended had an opportunity to receive some quality instruction and wrestle with some of the toughest competition in Florida at all 3 classifications.

Andrew Larson also attended the Chris Bono technique camp at Winter Springs earlier in June. Andrew got an opportunity to wrestle with Chris Bono himself along with several other former state champions and current collegiate wrestlers.

Andrew Larson, Adam Dry, Mike Wallace, and Chris Penafiel all competed at the Timber Creek AAU folkstyle tournament on June 20th. All 4 wrestlers faced some quality opponents and logged some very beneficial summer mat time. Both Andrew and Adam got an opportunity to wrestle state runner up Michael Nates from Hialeah.

Andrew Larson will be competing in the Asics Junior National Championships at Fargo, North Dakota in late July. Prior to Fargo, Andrew is planning to attend two more summer wrestling camps. One at Duke University and another in Minnesota. This will be Andrew's second trip to Fargo.

Chris Cox recently got back from the 10 day J Robinson intensive camp in Iowa. Chris injured his ankle on one of the last days of the camp but will benefit greatly from his time spent at this physically demanding camp.

Harrison Mathis wrestled at the Schoolboy National duals in Indianapolis earlier in the month. Harrison is Morgan Mathis' younger brother and we're excited about his heavyweight potential coming into Olympia as a Freshman this year.

Joe Delisle, Adam Dry, Mike Wallace, Graydon Willard, and Clinton Curtis have been working very hard in the Olympia football summer conditioning program in preparation for the upcoming football season. We wish them both the best of luck on the upcoming football season.

Dylan Ykimoff attended J Robinson's 28 day Intensive Wrestling Camp in the month of July. This is considered to be the most physically and mentally demanding high school wrestling camp in the United States.

Last Season's results.............

2006 FHSAA STATE TOURNAMENT RESULTS

We had our best showing ever at this year's state wrestling tournament as we brought home more hardware then ever before. Each and every one of our seven state qualifiers finished in the top 7 in their weight class. The team also set school records with four state medalist (3 last year) and most points scored at 65.5 (we had 56 last year). We came in 7th place out of 120 3A teams for the second year in a row. I want to thank Coach Bourst and Coach Chapman for all of the hard work during this long wrestling season. They have both greatly contributed to the success of the team this year. Chapman will be leaveing Olympia this semester to attend grauate school at Ohio State, we wish hom the best. We really appreciated having all of the parents, younger wrestlers and alumni come down to support the team last week. Below you will find a recap for each of our seven wrestlers, final team standings and medal round results.

INDIVIDUAL STATE TOURNAMENT RESULTS

TODD FREEMAN, Senior 112lber

-3rd place finisher: 41 wins – 5 losses on the year

Todd finished in 3rd place and showed some of the most courage and desire to bounce back after a loss that I have ever seen at the state tournament. In the first round Todd was ahead of his opponent from Hialeah 7-1 before tweeking his neck and getting pinned. This was a very emotional loss as it ended his dream of being a state champion. After evaluating his situation Todd decided that he was going to take the long road through the consolation rounds to finish as high as he could at that point. Todd ripped off five impressive victories in a row winning 19-0, 20-4, 18-3 (against a returning state qualifier from Osceola), 20-11 (against a returning state runner-up from Miami Sunset) and a 6-5 win against the Oviedo’s Honorable Mention All American Justin Tortora (the same wrestler that defeated Todd 8-3 in the regional finals last weekend). In a dominant fashion Todd scored 90 match points this weekend more then any other wrestler in 1A, 2A, or 3A. His explosive and physical style of wrestling and leadership skills will both be greatly missed. Todd college plans are still undecided, he has received interest from different college programs.

ANDREW LARSON, Junior 125lber

-State Runner-up: 45 wins – 4 losses on the year

For the second year in a row we had a wrestler reach the championship finals, only this time we brought home silver. Andrew entered the tournament as an underdog but put in solid performance in every match winning 9-5 in the first round against a returning state qualifier from Lake Worth, 6-5 over a regional champion from Miami Springs in the first two rounds. In the semifinals on Friday night Larson dominated his opponent from Hialeah 15-3. Then in the championship final on Saturday night Andrew was winning 1-0 in the second period of the when he was pancaked going in for a shot and was pinned in 3:02 by South Dade’s Baez, who is the number 7 ranked sophomore in the nation. Andrew will be back next season to make another run at the top spot on the award podium.

WES MALLINGER, Senior 135lber

-6th place finisher: 45 wins - 6 losses on the year

In the first round Wes was defeated 3-2 by a two-time returning state placer Tim Burdine from Durant. In Thursday night’s wrestle-back round Mallinger beat a senior from Fort Lauderdale Western 7-3. Friday afternoon Wes overcame a total animal from Miami Hialeah 6-4 in overtime. Saturday morning Wes defeated Oviedo’s nationally ranked sophomore Jake Schalles 6-4, Schalles defeated Mallinger in November. Then in the consolation semifinals Wes again faced Durant’s Tim Burdine (whom last season ironically enough lost to Olympia’s Karson Ardaman by 1 point in the same two rounds), this time Wes scored on three takedowns while burdine only recorded one, the difference was that Wes gave up 3 costly near fall points early as he lost 9-6. Wes then lost in overtime 4-2 against the regional champion from Deltona in the 5th/6th place final. After an average 11th grade season Wes turned in on more in one year then any wrestler I have ever coached. He was accepted into UF’s early admission and plans to study premed.

GUINO BENOIT, Senior 145lber

-7th in the state: 40 wins – 10 losses on the year

In the first round Guino was defeated 8-1 by the wrestler from Dr Krop that ended up placing 3rd in the tournament. Thursday night Guino won by a 19-4 technical fall against his Palm Beach Central opponent. On Friday after noon he again dominated with a 17-2 technical fall against a Lake Worth opponent. Saturday morning Gunio gave up a big 5 point move at the end of the first period and was playing catch up while his opponent protected the lead on went on to finish 5th. Guino’s college plans are undecided.

JOE DELISLE, Junior 189lber

-5th place finisher: 34 wins – 14 losses on the year

DeLisle opponent up with a 4-2 win over the regional runner-up from East Lake. Then in the quarterfinals he defeated the regional champion from South Dade by a score of 8-3. In the championship semifinals DeLisle lost 3-2, coming one point away from the championship bout. Dropping down to the consolation semifinal DeLisle was winning the match going into the third period when his South Ridge opponent choose top and secure a cradle and pinned DeLisle, he went on to place 3rd pinning the South Dade wrestle that DeLilse defeated in the quarterfinals.

For the 5th/6th place finals Delisle was trailing 1-0 with seconds remaining in the match and in dramatic fashion DeLisle blasted through on a shot to score the 2 point takedown and win at the buzzer.

RYAN NEWMAN, Senior 215lber

-7th in the state: 34 wins – 17 losses on the year

For the second weekend in a row and on the grandest of stages Ryan again defied the odds and went 2-2 at the state tournament to come in 7th place. Nobody gave him a chance to make it out of the region the week before but Ryan (lacking the most of the physical tools that his opponents possessed this weekend) showed the heart of a warrior finding was to battle and fight threw adversity. Ryan truing was a Cinderella Man during the FHSAA state series and his run will not be soon forgotten in our area. Ryan will be attending FSU next Fall.

MORGAN MATHIS, Senior

-7th in the state: 38 wins - 9 losses on the year

In the first round Morgan defeated South Dade’s regional runner-up 5-2. In the quarterfinals Morgan was defeated by the regional Champion from Palm Beach Central. That wrestler went on to win the state title beating Oviedo’s Kenny Lester (who was ranked #1 in the nation) in the final, to quote Morgan “That makes my loss to him Ligament”. Mathis then went on to defeat Plantation heavyweight by a score of 3-1. Then on Saturday Morning Morgan faced Edgewater’s Dylan Steele (an honorable mention All American) and lost 3-0. Morgan’s college plans are undecided.

2006 METRO CONFERENCE WRESTLING TOURNAMENT

Our team had another outstanding weekend on the mat as we captured our second Metro Conference Title in a row. Along the way breaking school records for most finalist (10) and most individual champions (5), in 2005 we had 9 finalist and 4 champions.   Senior Todd Freeman made history by becoming Olympia's only three time Metro Champion wrestler, pinning his way through the event for the third year in a row. This is a feat that can't be topped until at the earliest 2011, if ever. Freeman was also voted the tournament's most outstanding wrester for the second year in a row, this is his 3rd "O.W." award this season and the 5th "O.W." in his career, both school records as well. Junior Andrew Larson captured the "Most Falls / Least Time" award after recording fuor pins in 9:13 over the weekend in the 125lb division. Senior Wes Mallinger captured his fist Metro Title after finishing 4th the last two seasons. Mallinger defeated two returning state qualifiers in the semifinals and finals in dominant fashion. Senior Iggy Giambastani showed the heart of a champion nursing a sprained ankle en route to his 160lb title. The surprise of the entire tournament was unseeded Junior Joe DeLisle taking home the 189lb crown. DeLisle had to get past three top seeded wrestlers that had all finished ahead of him at tournaments this season and he pulled it off and kept the team score race down to the wire. Freshman 103lber Dylan Ykimoff upset a senior from Cypress Creek in
