AAU National Olympic Success!!!

The Nations Best Roll as Titans!

On a sweltering week in Norfolk, Virginia, Titan Junior Olympians represented in one of the biggest meets of the year. The AAU Junior Olympics welcomed returning and new athletes back to one of the premier national meets for youth in the country.

As considered, Georgia seems to be joining the elite powerhouse states – Cali, Florida, and Texas – with the top notch athletes in the country. Titans abound on our national qualifying lists in both AAU and USATF. The competition in our state and region allow us an advantage when going national, which proved to be the case in Virginia.

Reginald Warren brought home third place in the 800 meter run, finishing with the highest medal place for the Titans in theses games. He finishes the season as the State and Regional Champion in the 800 meter run for the Young Men division.

Eric Harris made his way to the Junior Olympics as a double qualifier placing at the state championships and qualifying for the regional championships in the 200 and 400 meter sprints. He is an Olympian with performances in the 200 and 400.

Trey Harris became a national finalist in two events. He led the Titans to these nationals in three events. As a state champion in the 200 meter hurdles, he went on to take the regional title. His state and regional performances in the 100 and 200 meter dashes prepared him for one of the most competitive fields in this age group ever. He ran against the national record holder all year and in the Junior Olympics, the onslaught on the record took hold. He was in the field of competitors that witnessed the record being broken, re-broken, and broken again. As a member of the 4x4 relay, he was a bronze medalist at the state championships.

Rashaad Graham, the regional champion in the shot and discus represented the Titans with Olympian throws. He showed abundant promise competing from the bottom of the age group and looks forward to a full year to throw all the way back to the JO’s in 2007.

Devon Henderson continued his bounding ways. He provided a repeat performance in the high jump. In only his second summer season, “Mr. Henderson,” the state champion is a two time Olympian.

Anthony Harris ran, and ran again. He was a two event performer at the Junior Olympics in the 800 meter and 1500 meter runs. With his positive performances, he made next years competitors take notice that he plans a repeat performance for 2007.

Run Ryan, run. And he ran, and he ran, and he ran. All the way to the Junior Olympics in the 1500, 3000 and pentathlon. He is the state and regional 3000 meter champion and state runner up in the 1500. In one year, he has run enough miles to sustain him through the next year. As he plans to take a year off to compete in other sports, we wish him well and congrats on a job well done.

The Amazing Nicholson!!! In his first time EVER running track, Cedric made it as far as you go…the J-O’s. Prior to two weeks into the summer season, Cedric had never run track, spring or summer. As excited as he is about running, the coaching staff is as excited about the potential. He is an Olympian in two events.

Colin Humble is another distance runner that has mileage to spare. He is an Olympian in the triathlon and 1500 meters. After his good season, he joins his brother for a break from the sport for a year. Good luck and best wishes.

Andrew Harris, a member of the State 4x4 and regional championship team represented the Titan family in the 200 meter sprint. There were more Harris’ at this Junior Olympics than some whole teams. Great job on a strong season.

Bryan Long sprinted to finals after finals in state and regional action and qualified in two open events as well as the 4x4. Although young, he is a repeat Olympic performer with a great future. In the time he’s been a Titan, he has shown a marked improvement with great prospective.

Ayanna Graham leaped her Olympic endeavors in the High Jump. She capped a year of steady performances. She forms the first part of what will soon be part of the strongest contingent of Titans. She has great plans for a year in the midget age classification that will prove to be extremely competitive.

Aubree Collins is another two event Olympian with sights on a great season to come. This first year Titan excelled in meets, but her drive to get better in practice helped set the tone for the Titans-South. She brings it hard daily and it paid off with an appearance at the JO’s. Her leadership in practices inspires others and will be an asset as she helps to lead next years midget girls.

Kevia Gonzales overcame an injury that occurred at the Regional Championships in her unbridled venture to get the Junior Olympics. She set the goal early in the season and fought off the injury to make her goal. She is to be commended for not giving up and testing her limits. This former GRPA state champion proved her worth with a gold medal finish as the state champion in the 100 meter dash. She has ambitious plans for 2007 as she prepares to help lead a formidable Titans midget girls team.

Chelsea Crayton proved that great consistency and character will take you far. Her positive attitude and swift feet were invaluable in individual or relay fashion. As a leader of the 4x4, she was a medal winner in both AAU and USATF Nationals. Once again, she will be part of the talented core of athletes in next year’s midget classification. This state and regional silver medalist led the dynamic 4x4 divas to great performances.

As a first year Titan team member, this dynamic diva, Elisea Jones proved an asset to both relays while shining in great performances throughout the year. She helped lead the 4x4 to both nationals and was runner up to the state champion in the 200 meter dash. She followed up her silver performance with another silver at the regional championships. She looks forward to the challenges offered in a deep field when she joins the sub-midget classification in 2007.

Although it’s only her second year in summer track, Nyambi Shoates is a repeat Olympian. Not only was she a member of the dynamic divas of the 4x4 that were national medalists, she is the returning state and regional champion in the 200 meters. This year, she added the title of 100 meter state and regional champion to her 2007 champion credentials. Finishing 10th in the nation in both the 100 and 200 has her hungry for a medal performance in 2007.

Sydney Henderson was a consummate team performer in her diva debut for the 4x4. This Olympian is a repeat performer in the 200 meter dash at the JO’s. As a multi-year Olympian, Sydney brings experience of having done that, and again. She prepares to help lead a formidable team back for another round of achievement in 2007.

Erica Harris kicked off her first year in the sport with a Jr. Olympian performance. She threw the shot from Georgia to Virginia. She helped the Titans to lead the nation in most Olympian Harris’. She looks forward to a promising year in the sprints as well as throws.

Special thanks to parents Cedric Nicholson Sr., Leo Harris and Valerie Crayton for stepping up at the meets. Cedric volunteered to help out on the track in Savannah. Leo staked out our spots for us in Virginia. Valerie helped to take care of our divas.

We sincerely appreciate the dedication of all of the parents. Although the athletes worked and performed to advance, parents made it happen. It was a long year you helped us all to achieve TITAN PRIDE!!!!

Record-Breakers!

Hoschton, Georgia
July 9, 2006

Some things change and some things stay the same.  One thing is for sure, when the Titans are on the track; no record is safe!  In a weekend full of exciting performances and highly anticipated match ups, once again the kids in red and blue left their mark.  This weekend, the best of the best from D.C., Maryland, North Carolina, S. Carolina, Virginia, and Georgia got together to battle for births to this year’s USATF Junior Olympics to be held at Morgan State University in Baltimore.

A total of 33 Titans (our highest ever) came out of the weekend with a ticket to this year’s JOs.  Nearly half(16) of those athletes achieved personal best performances.  Twenty-One athletes walked away with at least 1 gold medal and 16 with at least 1 silver.

Record-Breakers

The bantam girls team (pictured above) of Darielle Oliver, Nyambi Shoates, Elisea Jones and Chelsea Crayton continued their winning ways.  The foursome is undefeated this season and their time of 4:33.85 established a new region record.

The intermediate girls team of LaChe Williams, Takeia Pinckney, Chelsey Thomas and LaCresha Styles bounced back from a disappointing second place finish at the state meet with a blistering performance in the 4 x 100 relay.  Their record-breaking time of 46.63 is the second fastest in the country this year.

Not to be outdone by the girls, the intermediate boys’ team of Charles Flewellen, William Wynne, D-Man Buchanan and Justin Chambers ran away from the competition.  Led by Wynne’s 46.5 split, the team flexed just enough to leave their names in the record books.  Their time of 3:15.96 is the fastest in the country this year.

Joe and Jon

The quest for national supremacy officially started today at the Georgia AAU XC District Championship held at East Lake Elementary in McDonough. The Titans had many standout performances across a few different age groups. Joseph Jenkins, age 7, got things started in the 8 and under boys category. In a nail biting finish, Joe fought off the competition to claim the first gold of the day. In the bantam boys division, Josiah Jenkins was equally impressive as he ran away from the competition. Austin Gonzalez and Benjamin Kennedy also showed great determination in their season debuts. In midget boys action, yet another Jenkins led the way. This time it was older brother, Joshua, sealing the deal and leading the way to a perfect score for the midget boys. Josh was closely followed by Andy Gonzalez, De'Marea Hawkins, Austin Carpenter and Jason Luster. The team showed no mercy in route to a clean sweep and average time of 11:08. Rounding out the team with strong runs were Brett Carter, Ryan Humble and Anthony Harris. In midget girl action, the lone female Titan, Destiny Jenkins, showed why she will be a force to be reckoned with at nationals. She was impressive from start to finish on her way to victory. Last but not least were the youth boys twosome of Justin Chambers and Eric Harris. Both were extremely impressive in what was their first and possibly last cross country competition. Next up for the team is the USATF state meet at Al Bishop park on November 12th.

With its eye fiercely focused on the upcoming USATF Junior Olympic National Championship, the Titans Track Club advanced its quest for gold medals with a widely successful showing in regional competition in Greensboro, N.C. last weekend.

Thirteen personal records in individual events, coupled with season-bests in numerous relays allowed the Titans, based in Marietta, Ga., to qualify 21 of 23 competitors for nationals, July 26-31, in Indianapolis.

"It looks like the majority of folks are starting to bring it at exactly the right time," said Titans founder and head coach, Tony Carpenter. "I was very pleased with what I saw."

The top three finishers in each event advanced through the region that featured athletes from Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C.

Standing out among the throng of runners were those donning the now well-recognized, red and blue uniforms identifying the Titans.

Using the 400-meter race as a building block, the Titans displayed their overall strength across the board - claiming first-place finishes in everything from the 200 meters to the 4x800-meter relay. Top-notch efforts in the field events further solidified the Titans' mounting reputation as a national force in every age group.

Among the most impressive competitors this season has been 14-year-old Justin Chambers. Chambers admittedly has exceeded his own expectations this year en route to posting an undefeated 400-meter record heading into Junior Olympics.

Chambers crossed the finish line in 49.39 seconds to set a regional record, and ran a 22.13 in the 200.  The regional record was the 16th record that Chambers has broken this year.  Still, with nationals two weeks away, Chambers is most interested in piquing when it matters most.

"My goal coming into the year was to run a 49-anything," Chambers said. "I have a new goal in the 400; to run a 48."

Asked if winning a national championship ring was within reach, Chambers did not mince words: "Most definitely, with hard work and effort. I can run a 48, but a 49 or 50 could win."

It appears that 50-second races are now only in Chambers' past. His fastest time this season is a 49.06, run at Youth Nationals in Knoxville, Tenn. Chambers, with an improved start and stronger work over the first 50 meters, is now tracking down a 21-second 200-meter time, as well.

His output is a virtual mirror of David Chaplin's. Chaplin, who is headed to the University of Iowa on a track scholarship, won the young men's 200 in 21.45. Armanti Hayes, also competing with the young men, took first in the 400, second in the 200 and was on the second-place 400-meter relay team.  Hayes’ mark of 47.26 in the 400 is a personal best and establishes him as one of the favorites in Indy.

Another stellar individual performance was posted by 11-year-old high jumper, John Gibson. Gibson, competing in track and field for the first time, has skyrocketed every meet.

This time, Gibson firmly established himself among the country's elite with a leap of 5-1-3/4 in the midget boys high jump. The mark was 3-1/4-inches better than Gibson's personal best, an astounding improvement. The mark has Gibson ranked third nationally in his age group.

Lauren Chambers, twin sister of Justin Chambers, took first in the shot put and discus and finished 3rd in the javelin. Rashaad Graham, took first and second in the shot put and discus respectively. His sister, Ayanna Graham, was first in the racewalk.

The individual standouts did not diminish at all from the backbone of the Titans - the relay teams.

The Titans suffered major setbacks this year due to injuries. Youth boys' runners Kenny Gilstrap and Stephen Hill were both lost to injuries, as was De'Marea Hawkins, who was injured earlier this summer.

Still, the Titans have managed to forge forward with outstanding, record-setting times.

The midget boys' 4x800-meter relay team of Andy Gonzalez, Brett Carter, Tony McConico and Austin Carpenter has the nation's leading time. With Carpenter, who also placed third in the 800 and 1500, anchoring the foursome in a 2:20 split, the group broke the regional record with a finish of 9:40.80.

In the same age group, the 4x400 team of Cameron Washington, Cornelius Savage, McConico and Trey Harris also took first in the regional meet and enters Junior Olympics as one of the favorites.

The Young Men's relays are running at a blazing clip.

The team of David Chaplin, Courtney Lester, Kenneth Mitchell and Armanti Hayes posted an amazing 3:10.15, the nation's leading 4 x 400 time.  It was apparent that these young men were on a mission when Chaplin established the team early with a blistering first leg split of 46 seconds and change.  The foursome led from start to finish and was never challenged.  Hayes also recorded a sub-47 split.  The same foursome was edged out in the 4 x 100 relay.  They recorded a season best time of 40.42, which is second in the nation.

The sub-bantam girls' relay team of Kiyoko Felder, Cori Russell, Nyambi Shoates and Sydney Henderson also left its mark, taking first in the 4-x-100-meter relay while setting a new regional record of 1:03.65.   Henderson rounded out her solid day with a second-place finish in the 200 and third place in the 100.

The intermediate boys' field was highlighted by hurdlers William Wynne and Lonnie Burton. Wynne was second in the 110-meter high hurdles and third in the 400-meter hurdles. Burton placed third in the 110-hurdles.

Burton and Wynne, along with Devin Floyd and Miles Ottinot, teamed to win the 4-x-400-meter relay.  Their time of 3:19.67 moved them up to #3 in the nation.

Others advancing to Junior Olympics included Eric Harris in the 400 and 200; the intermediate boys 400-meter relay and Andy Gonzalez in the 1500.

Brandon - 100M State Champ!

Augusta, Georgia
The Titans Track Club wrapped up the 2005 spring season in grandiose fashion this weekend.  Twenty-six athletes made the journey to Augusta for the annual state championship meet.   The weather was pristine, the competition fierce and the Titans were ready!  Over the 2 days of competition, all 26 athletes medaled. Thirteen finished first at least once and 51 total medals were earned.  The youth boys, led by Justin Chambers (aka “The Machine”), swept the sprints finishing first in the 100 (Brandon McNabb), 200 (Chambers),400(Chambers-new state record!), 4 x100 and 4 x 400 relays(Chambers, McNabb, Eric Harris, Darius Doughty).  Doughty also claimed first in the standing long jump, while Harris finished second behind Chambers in the 200.  Marcus King made his first trip to state a memorable one, claiming second in the shot put.  It is hard to believe that this is the first year for McNabb, Harris and King.

Midget boys were led by Austin Carpenter who had to battle some of the best 12 year old middle distance runners in the country.  AC recorded a personal best on his way to a first place finish in the 800, 2nd place in the 1600 and 4 x 400 relay.  Cameron Washington avoided the sophomore jinx and impressed all finishing 2nd in the 400 and running a stellar lead off leg on the 2nd place 4 x 400.  De’Marea Hawkins and Steven Johnson rounded out the 2nd place relay.  Hawkins was most impressive, clocking a 1:01 split to put the team back in contention.  First year runner, John Gibson, raised the bar in the high jump soaring over 4’8” to claim the state high jump title.  Brett Carter had 2 medal winning performances in the 800 and 1600.  Rashaad Graham showed up big in the shot put with a medal winning performance.

Chambers Twins Smash Records at AAU National Meet
Lauren and Justin Chambers showed up big at the AAU North Championship Meet. The mission heading into the meet was simple; break every record in sight. Mission Accomplised! Lauren got things started with a solid round of throws in the youth girls shot put. Her best toss of 42 feet 2 inches passed the old record by almost 2 feet. Justin closed out the meet on Sunday with 3 outstanding performances, taking down records in the youth boys 55(6.93), 200(24.68) and 400(54.93). A SEASON TO REMEMBER

By RANA L. CASH

In the shadow of the Acropolis, United States Olympians chased and captured countless track and field medals in Athens, Greece this summer. Thousands of miles away, surrounded by the majestic mountains of Eugene, Oregon, many future stars of the sport showcased their skills in a less glamorous, but no less glorious affair.

The University of Oregon hosted the USATF Junior Olympics and the AAU Junior Nationals were held at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. It was on these platforms that the Titans Track Club flaunted its own group of stellar youth athletes.

The Titans returned home with an astounding 28 medals in 13 events. Most impressively, 12-year-old Alphonso Davis became just the second Titan ever to secure a Junior Olympic gold medal in an open event, winning the 400 meters in the midget boys division.  Davis' individual accomplishment crowned a spectacular fourth-year campaign for the Titans and head coach, Tony Carpenter.   "This year, I think we took a huge step," Carpenter said. "We inherited some good talent, but we also took several kids who had never seen a track before and were successful with them."

The impressive run stretched from the indoor season, into the spring and through the final tape of summer.  Names like William Wynne, Justin Chambers, De'Marea Hawkins and Daamon Cooper - just to name a few - became locked in the minds of opposing programs. As a team, the Titans stood strong among the elite and showed why with victories at the Baytaf Classic in Tampa, Florida, and the Youth Athletics in Baltimore, Md., where the youth boys won their overall division.

JUNIOR OLYMPICS

Carpenter, a former standout at Kansas State University, orchestrated a spectacular season with his unique and effective coaching style. Utilizing a training regimen that emphasized the importance of not only working hard, but working smart, as well, Carpenter managed to ensure his athletes piqued at the perfect time - at Junior Olympics.

The athletes gradually improved throughout the season. While others saw their times drop drastically in mid-summer, the Titans had their eye trained on the national championships. The method reaped great dividends.

The bantam boys 4x400-meter relay team of Cameron GambleHawkins, Steven Johnson and Cameron Washington was draped in gold in Eugene. The foursome shocked the field by downing juggernauts Miami Northwest and Track Houston. Along with the Titans, Miami and Houston entered the race unscathed in USATF competition.  But it was the Titans who remained that way.

The midget boys 1600-meter relay team of Christopher Bowles, Davis, Christian Erdman and Jonathan Parks also remained undefeated this season, but it wasn't easy. The team, which also featured Marcus Caffey this summer, had shattered the state record with a time of 3:56.90. But they did more damage at nationals.  Davis reeled in the team from San Diego with an anchor leg split of 56.25 seconds to secure the win.

In the 200, Cooper, a dominant sprinter all season, took second place and a silver medal. Davis, the Georgia state record holder in the 400, was second in the event in the midget boys division. Wynne managed to capture a silver medal in the youth boys' 400 division. The midget boys' 4x800-meter relay team of Christopher Bowles, Austin Carpenter, Brett Carter and Erdman won silver at nationals, as well.

The medal hogging didn't stop there.

Three athletes took home bronze medals - Chambers in the youth boys' 400; Cooper in the youth boys' 100; and Hawkins in the bantam boys' 800.  Other Junior Olympic highlights included fourth-place finishes for bantam 100-sprinter Quintus Hill and the youth boys' 400-meter relay team of Chambers, Cooper, Kenneth Gilstrap and Stephen Hill. The same foursome also took sixth in the 1600-meter relay.

"I'm most proud of our bantam boys 4x400 national championship team," Carpenter said. "We had three of four kids who had never run summer track [win] on the biggest stage in summer track. They went into the finals as the underdog. They beat favorites from Houston, Miami and Orlando. That is special to me.

"I was also proud of our midget boys. They dominated all year long and went undefeated for the year...We surpassed all the expectations I had for our team this year."

        ONE TO REMEMBER

The Titans set the bar fairly high all year, though, beginning with the AAU Southern Indoor Championship, where the Titans won seven gold medals, five silver and a bronze medal. That collection included five individual national championships and two relay titles.

Eighteen members participated in the meet in Knoxville, Tenn. Wynne, 14, set youth records in the 400 and triple jump.

That set the tone for the entire year.

Youth girl Lauren Chambers, for instance, was unstoppable in the shot put and discus. She won the shot put at the Youth Nationals in Baltimore, punctuating what had already been a super season for Chambers. The Youth boys dominated their age group. Wynne paced the team with victories in the long jump and 400 meters, a second-place finish in the 200-meter hurdles and a 1600-meter relay team victory while teaming with Gilstrap, Hill and Justin Chambers.

Cooper ran a 23.01 in the 200 for the title there, and Ricco Braxton also had an impressive showing, finishing third in the triple jump.

The midget boys' 1600-meter relay team of Davis, Parks, Bowles and Marcus Caffey took first, and Caffey ran a personal best 57.77 to finish third in the 400. Austin Carpenter also set a personal record with a 5:05.81 in the 1500. Jarvis Caffey put in a personal record 51.03 in the 400.  Chris Davis scored a personal best of 49.44 on his way to a fifth place finish.

        A STATE-MENT

Whether they were veterans or newcomers, many Titans showed their promise this season. First-timers, like De'Marea Hawkins, Johnathan Parks, Cameron Washington and Matt McMurray proved their worth to the squad this year.

Kayla Hill, Marchelle Baker, LaCresha Styles and Nicole Davis all made major statements.  Courtney Lester, Javon McKay, Chris Davis and Jarvis Caffey teamed up to create one of the nation's strongest intermediate boys groups. Devonta Wright, Mike Ross, Tony McConico, and Cantrell Frazier were also key parts of the Titans' success.

Beraiah Baker, Dara Baker, AJ Braswell, Athena Carpenter, Jordan Howell and Cydnee Luther are all young competitors who displayed tremendous grit - not to mention talent - throughout the year. Individual titles were not unusual for Howell and Carpenter, both of whom are expected to make a big splash in the upcoming year. Howell and Braswell will compete with 8-year-olds next year and after making their presence known as 7-year-olds, a year of experience and growth will bode well for the two young Titans.

A year of maturity was pivotal for Cornelius Savage, who saw dramatic improvement from last year to this year, and then again as the season progressed. Reggie Jones, Darius Doughty, DJ Vereen and Jaron Roberson began the year in the spring season. While they each took pride in their individual improvement, they also lent a hand in adding quality depth to the Titans program. The same could be said for Ansyl Carpenter, Anthony Carpenter, Ryan and Colin Humble and Jeff Talley.

A VISION

As the Titans head into their fifth season, the program is striving for an even higher standard of excellence. Through fundraising and hard work, the Titans can reach all of their stated goals. This year, the Titans organized a hugely successful golf tournament that helped fund our trips to the national meets. There were also two well-run track meets hosted by the Titans this spring.

It doesn't stop there, however. The Titans are moving toward holding multiple practices at tracks across the area, expanding the coaching staff and growing a larger girls program.

As competitors become more seasoned, they will begin to take stock in their personal achievement. They'll set goals for themselves and work, through the guidance of skilled and experienced coaches, to achieve them. They'll focus on their goals and come to meets track-ready, eager to improve upon their times and distances.

What impact will this have on the program? The answer is obvious. The Titans have already surpassed many expectations, and will continue to do so in the coming years. Each year, the reputation for committed training becomes more renowned. Additionally, the athletes are becoming more disciplined and dedicated in their pursuit of outstanding performances. It is the hope of the program to see Titan athletes obtain collegiate scholarships to further pursue their education and thus become productive citizens.

More importantly, the young runners are learning that the lessons learned through track are transferable. Those lessons are reflected in their academic lives, in the ways in which they treat and respect their peers and in their personal family lives.

Ultimately, this is the goal of the Titans. The program is striving to mold winners - on and off the track.

"My long term goal for the program is to build a program where kids learn to set goals, develop a plan to reach those goals and put in the work to achieve those goals," Carpenter said. "They learn to focus and to work through disappointments and setbacks. They learn to get along with other people from all types of backgrounds. I want them to be able to take what they learn on the track, off the track.

"My interest is in seeing them succeed, both on the track and in life. My hope is that the skills learned will translate into both academic and athletic scholarships. I would also like to see those who benefit from the program, give back to the program when they are able."

TITANS SCORE NATIONAL TITLES IN BALTIMORE

Youth Boys claim team title.

A small group of Titans travelled to Baltimore over the holiday weekend for the USATF Youth Athletics National Meet.  The team's objective for the weekend was to see how they matched up with some of the country's best in preparation for this year's Junior Olympics.  Teams from all over the country showed up and one thing is clear.  We are ready!

Our youth boys dominated their age group and earned the team title.  William Wynne, once again, paced the team, scoring victories in the long jump(20'-7"), 400 meters(50.89) and second in the 200 hurdles(25.68).  Wynne teamed with Kenny Gilstrap, Stephen Hill and Justin Chambers to easily beat the competition in the 4 x 400 relay.  Chambers, finished 3rd in the 200 hurdles and the 200 meters(23.35).  He teamed with Gilstrap, Hill and Daamon Cooper on the 3rd place 4 x 100 relay.  Cooper continued to impress as well.  He ran away from the elite field in the 200 meters with a personal best of 23.01.  He later finished 2nd in the 100.  Hill soared to a third place finish in the long jump.  Ricco Braxton also had an impressive showing, finishing 3rd in the triple jump.

Youth girl, Lauren Chambers, beat back the competition with a personal best toss in the shot put (42'-5") that was good enough for her first national title.    She also had solid performances in the javelin and discus.

.
Competition
"1000s line up to compete."
The midget boys were led by Alphonso Davis, who finished 2nd in teh 200 meters and 6th in the 100 meters.  Davis joined Johnathan Parks, Christopher Bowles and Marcus Caffey to outpace the competition in the 4 x 400 relay.  Caffey had a personal best performance in the 400 meters, finishing 3rd at 57.77.  Austin Carpenter appears to be regaining form as well.  The 10 year old ran a personal best 5:05.81 in the 1500.

De'Marea Hawkins made his debut in the bantam boys 1500.  Hawkins finished fourth in 5:14.  He was also impressive in the 800 finishing 4th in 2:29.09.

Intermediate boys, Christopher Davis and Jarvis Caffey ran well in the 400.  Caffey recorded a personal best of 51.03.  Davis ran 49.44 and finished 5th overall.

TITANS CLAIM STATE TITLES
all daamon
Daamon runs away from the competition
By RANA L. CASH

The backdrop changes weekly. The results, however, remain the same. This time, it was the USATF Georgia Association Junior Olympics qualifying meet providing the proving ground for the Titans Track Club. The Titans continue to dominate their rivals and assert themselves as one of the country's premier youth track and field programs. The fourth-year team took a significant step toward its goal of maintaining national clout with several record-breaking performances and other solid efforts June 17-20 at Winder Barrow High School, en route to the Region meet July 9-11 in Columbia, S.C.

Bank On It!
William Wynne has paced the Titans all season. By hitting the trifecta - capturing three individual titles in the 400 meters(50.94), 200-meter hurdles(25.84) and the triple jump - Wynne showed why he is one of the biggest threats on the Youth Boys' circuit. In another display of his overall ability, the 14-year-old Wynne ran the third leg of the winning 4x400-meter relay team that also featured Kenny Gilstrap, Stephen Hill and anchor Justin Chambers (3:35.88).
Like Wynne, Cooper and Chambers are taking numbers this year. Cooper is among the elite in any field in the 100 (11.63) and 200 meters (23.22). Cooper also ran the second leg on the runner-up 400-meter relay team that posted a time of 45.92. Chambers anchored the foursome, adding to a meet that also included runner-up finishes in the 400 meters(51.22) and the 200-meter hurdles(26.01).
If they represent the most decorated Titans on the boys' side, the status is equally due to Lauren Chambers in the Youth Girls' division. Lauren Chambers is a field-events specialist, each week walking away with crowns in the shot put and discus. She won them both in the state meet, and was second in the javelin.

Going The Distance
No race is too long and no distance too arduous for this group of Titans. While the team is stockpiled with quarter-milers and sprinters, the middle- and long-distance runners routinely help buoy the squad.

It's that type of balance that has made the team so strong. Christian Erdman is inching his way toward major recognition as he took first in the 800-meters with a 2:24.95 and finished second in the 1500 with a time of 4:53.58. Brett Carter stretched the limits in the 3,000-meters, crossing the tape second in 10:51.08. Along with teammates Marcus Caffey (third in the 400) and Austin Carpenter, Carter and Erdman carried the 4x800-meter relay team to within a pinch of the state record with a time of 9:57.72. Carter and Carpenter also ran well in the 800 and the 1500.

Eight-year-old Colin Humble also doubled as a silver-medallist, with second place finishes in the 800 (2:47.71) and 1500 (5:39.60). Humble was also third in the 400, and older brother Ryan Humble placed fourth in the triathlon. Meanwhile, Matt McMurray did damage in the Bantam division by finishing fourth in the 1500, while De'Marea Hawkins  and Javon McKay took fifth in the 800 in their respective age groups..

Athena Carpenter, 8, showed her versatility by competing in the 200 through 800-meter races. Her best showing was in the 800, where she was fourth with a time of 3:10.63.

Catch Them If You Can
That is a difficult proposition when lining up against Quintus Hill. Hill blistered the field in the preliminaries of the 100 meters. He didn't let up in the finals, either, crossing in 13.58 for the gold medal. Alphonso Davis took the reins in the 200, but it was in the 400 that he truly made his mark. Davis, 12, broke the state record set by Willis Hamblin in 1995 (56.42) with a time of 56.12.
With his presence on the Midget's 1600-meter relay team, it was no surprise to see the group of Christopher Bowles, Davis, Marcus Caffey and Jonathan Parks absolutely shatter the state record with a blazing time of 3:56.90. That was well ahead of the record of 4:04.88 set by the Road Runners in 1995.
Cantrell Frazier anchored the second-place 400-meter relay team, which included Devonte Wright, Mike Ross and Tony McConico.
The Bantam division's 1600-meter relay team of Cameron Gamble, De'Marea Hawkins, Cameron Washington and Steven Johnson ran a record-breaking time of 4:23.50, besting their own previous mark of 4:24.31.
Gamble and Washington - Double Cam - again had solid showings. Gamble was third in the 200 (28.74) and fifth in the 400 (1:03.43), behind second-place finisher Washington (1:02.67).
The intermediate boys also captured the title in the 4x400-meter relay. Alan Strong, Javon McKay, Christopher Davis and Courtney Lester finished in 3:21.82. Lester also managed a third-place in the 200 (22.77) -- just in front of teammate Alan Strong -- and fourth in the 400 (50.29) behind teammate Christopher Davis, who was second in 49.34.

Finishing in Style
Finishing in Style!!
A Long Way
The Titans advanced a host of long jump competitors to the regional meet. LaCresha Styles and Marchelle Baker took second and fourth respectively in the event to move on. Stephen Hill was second in the Youth Boys group. Jonathan Parks and Devonte Wright placed second and third in the long jump to leap into the Region competition. Along with Wynne in the triple jump, Ricco Braxton notched a third-place finish and right behind him was Darius Doughty. Braxton also finished fifth in the discus. Kayla Hill was fourth in the shot put.

In addition to her field event success, Styles bolted out of the curve and down the straightaway to finish third in the 200 meters with a personal best time of 25.82. She was fifth in the 100 (12.91).

Corey
Corey Ashbourne turned in three strong performances at this weeks AAU Association meet. The first year Titan, ran away with both the 800 and 1500 races in the bantam age group. His 1500 time of 5:07.42 ranks third in the country this year. Corey was most impressive in his second leg on the 4 x 400 Relay. His 1:04 split brought his team (Cornelius Savage, JayMetric Tucker, Ryan Humble) from behind and gave them a lead that they refused to give up. The team was challenged to the end by the other Titans bantam relay of Cameron Gamble, Tony McConico, Austin Carpenter and Orlando Frazier.

Congratulations to all!

TITANS STAND OUT AT JAGUAR RELAYS
The Titans were out in full force at this year's Jaguar Relays. Several of the kids were able to take advantage of the ideal weather, producing some of the year's fastest times. More than half of the team (11 of 21) turned in personal best at the meet. 6 Titans turned in performances that moved them into the top 10 nationally. The team scored 191.5 points. This score was 3rd out of 12 for Georgia teams. The boys score of 150.5 was good enough for 2nd among the Georgia teams.

The team garnered 5 gold medals, 8 silver and 7 bronze.

.............................. MEET HIGHLIGHTS........................

Corey Ashbourne ran away from the field in the 1500 and turned in a solid performance in route to a second place finish in the 800. Corey's winning time of 5:08 in the 1500 is the fastest in the country for bantam boys this year. In last weeks action, Corey ran the nations fastest 800 (2:28.63) time of the year.

William Wynne turned quite a few heads on his way to 3 stellar 400 meter runs. Will finished 3rd in the youth boys 400 and also ran anchor leg on the sprint medley and 4 x 400 relays. Will overcame deficits in both relay races but was most impressive in the 4 x 400. Behind by close to 80 meters when receiving the baton, he went to work chewing up ground at a pace so fast I can't publish the split time. Needless to say, the 2 unsuspecting competitors were caught and dealt with. Will also soared to a second place finish in the long jump with a leap of 17-2.

Christian Erdman made his season debut in the 1500, finishing 3rd in a time of 5:07. He was equally impressive in route to a 2nd place finish in the 3000. His time of 10:48 places him in the top 5 nationally.

Lauren Chambers brought home the gold in the midget girls shot put with a toss of 28-6.

Cameron Gamble showed the that you can be competitive from the bottom of the age group. Cameron turned in a personal best in the 400 at a time of 1:07.08, while finishing 3rd in a very fast race. His time ranks him as the #2 9 year old in the country and #11 for 10 and under.

Aisha Frazier continues to round into shape. AM, as her mother likes to call her, continues to shave seconds off of her times. She turned in solid performances in both the 800 (4th place) and 1500 (2nd place).

Colin Humble continues to show that little legs can go a long way. The 7 year old came ever so close to getting under the 3 minute mark with a time of 3:00.14. He also posted a personal best in the 1500 with a time of 5:52.77.

BROOKS SHINES AT JAGUAR MEET
Aieshia Brooks proved that hard work does pay off at this week's Jaguar Relays. The soft spoken 13 year old let her running do the talking in the youth girls 400M run. After 200 meters, she found herself trailing a rival from Miami by about 15 meters. This deficit would quickly be erased as she pulled even with the leader and eventually ran away with the race. In the end, she was the only competitor still standing (literally). Her time of 57.73 was a personal best and also a team record.

Just 48 hours prior, Aieshia graduated from the eigth grade with honors and was the class valedictorian.

..............CONGRATULATIONS AIESHIA!!.............

This weekend, just outside of Chicago in Merrellville, Indiana a group of 5 Titans sent an early message to the youth track and field community...... SEE YA!

The team was on the road to participate in the AAU National Indoor Meet. Justin "O.G." Chambers led the way (see story below) with gold medal performances in the midget boys 55m, 200M and 400M. Austin Carpenter also turned in a mercury rising performance in the bantam boys 800M and 1500M. He claimed the silver medal in both events while clocking personal best times. It took two near national record performances by Ryan Mitsos (this kid was flyin') in both events to keep Austin from claiming gold. Anthony Carpenter soared to a fourth place finish in the Youth Boys Triple Jump.    Ryan Humble bounced back from a tough 800M to finish sixth in the Bantam Boys 1500M. William Wynne had an impressive early season run in the Youth Boys 400M, finishing eigth overall.

That's it for now. Gotta get some sleep. Pictures and times will be posted in the next couple of days.

Titans Claim 2nd at Region IIIB Championship!
SAVANNAH, GA

Only thing hotter than the Savannah heat was the Titans Track Club. The team was in action for the Region IIIB Championship where only the top 4 finishers would advance to this year's AAU Junior Olympic competition in Knoxville. 27 out of 28 Titan athletes qualified for this year's JO event.

The meet had several highlights in the 4 day competition. The team finished second in team scoring for the boys division.

GOLD MEDAL WINNERS

Claiming the team's first gold of the championship was Ansyl Carpenter in the Bantam Boys Triathlon (HJ, SP, 200). He established personal bests in all three events and is now ranked #1 in the nation.

Cameron Gamble continued his dominance in the Primary boys division with victories in the 100, 200 and 400.   Cameron's time of 1:07.17 in the 400 was not only a personal best but also the fastest time in the nation this year for a Primary Boy and was only fractions off the national record.

Julian Lavender showed why he has not lost an 800 race this summer by dominating the field from start to finish with a personal best time of 2:43.81. He also established a personal best in the 400, while finishing second to Gamble.    Both performances place Julian in the top 5 in the nation.

Jalani Wynn showed up big in the Primary Boys shot put. His winning toss of 18-5 puts him in good position for this years' JO competition.

William Wynne aka Big Will just keeps on rolling. BW ran away from the competition like only he can in the Midget Boys 400 and moved to #2 in the nation with a time of 56.43. During his break he soared to 1st place in the long jump and as an encore played Houdini while anchoring the victorious 4 x 400 relay (Justin Chambers, Akil Dozier, Ricco Braxton, BW), making a 30 meter deficit disappear before one could say abra cadabra!

Lauren Chambers continued her mastery of the discus while claiming first with a toss of 52-2. She was also 2nd in the shot put at 24-7.

Josh Hamadi ran away with the Midget Boys 1500 in a time of 5:07.92. He also advanced in the 800.

Gabriel Greaves had a strong showing in the Intermediate division with a gold medal performance in the 1500 (4:29.98). He also claimed the bronze in the 800 (2:04.81).

The Youth Boys relay of Alphonso Carreker, Mychal-David Wynn, Jonathan Dwyer & Charleston Samuels cruised to victory in the 4 x 100 relay with a time of 47.41.

SILVER MEDALS

Just about any other day, any other time Christian Erdman's performance in the 1500 would have been good enough for Gold. Christian established a personal best of 5:03.95 while claiming the silver. His performance moved him up to #2 in the nation for Bantam boys. He also finished second in the 800 with another personal best of 2:32.11.

Jay'Metric Tucker continued to roll in the Sub-Bantam 400 finishing 2nd with a personal best of 1:07.82.

Chris Bowles sizzled the track with a time of 1:05.02 in the Bantam Boys 400.

Cameron Jackson earned another trip to the Junior Olympics in the high jump with a leap of 4'-7". CJ earned the Silver at last year's JO event and has his eyes firmly set on the Gold this year.

Bantam Boys 4 x 400 relay (Ansyl Carpenter, Chris Bowles, Christian Erdman and Jay'Metric Tucker) moved to #6 in the nation with a season best time of 4:32.67.

Justin Chambers was solid all meet long. JC ran an incredible leg on the bronze medal 4 x 800 relay and came back with a silver medal performance in the Sub-Midget Boys 400, clocking a time of 1:01.69.

Donovan Fields glided to a silver medal finish in the Primary Boys Long Jump.

BRONZE MEDAL

The Midget Boys 4 x 800 team of Josh Hamadi, Akil Dozier, Justin Chambers and Jonathan Felix also established a season best time of 10:00.21, moving them up to #7 in the country.

Arlando Scott aka Tre will represent the Titans this year in the Bantam 100M dash after finishing 3rd at this year's region meet. Tre was a Bronze Medalist at last year's JO meet and is looking to do some serious damage this year.

Ricco Braxton was solid in the Midget Boys 100M dash on his way to the bronze. He also was a key contributor on the winning 4 x 400 relay.

William 100s County 2007

It's county championship time across Metro Atlanta and the high school aged Titans have center stage.  Over the last couple of days, several standout performances were seen in Cobb, Dekalb, Fulton and Gwinnett.

In Cobb, record-breaking performances were turned in by William Wynne.  The McEachern junior, established a new county record in the 110 Hurdles of 13.89, surpassed the record in the 300 Hurdles with a mark of 36.90 and joined fellow Titan, Lonnie Burton on the record breaking 4 x 400 relay.  Burton ran a season best of 14.37 in the 110s on his way to a 2nd place finish and 38.78 in the 300 hurdles to finish 3rd.  Burton will be attending Elon University next year to play football.

justin county 4 x 100
In Gwinnett, Miles Ottinot (South Gwinnett), had strong performances in both the 400 and 200.  Miles finished second in the 400 and seventh in the 200.

At the Atlanta Track Classic, several more Titans were in action in preliminary rounds.  Jarvis Caffey of Grady leads all qualifiers in the 400 (49.48) followed closely by fellow Titan Reginald Warren of Mays.  RJ leads all qualifiers in the 800 (1:58.07).  On the girls side, LaChe Williams of Washington turned in a very impressive 400 mark of 57.76 (good for 2nd best overall).  LaChe also qualified for the finals of tonight's 200.

At The Woodlands Invitational this past weekend, Sarah Skogen of Woodstock HS ran a personal best of 25.45 in the 200 claiming third and was victorius in the 400 with a time of 58.87.  Sarah has signed a track scholarship with Elon University in N. Carolina.

Cobb Titans HS 2007

cresha 4 x100 county 2007
Zandi DeBowles, a senior at Pope, ran away from the field in the girls 300 Hurdles with a personal best time of 44.26.  Zandi also finished first in the long jump and second in the high jump.  She has signed on with Tulane Univeristy to run track next year.

Sophomore LaCresha Styles (McEachern) aka "Cre Cre" continues to do "big" things.  She defended her 100M sprint title, anchored the winning 4 x 100 team, ran an incredible leg on the record breaking 4 x 400 team and soared to a third place finish in the long jump.

Other solid Cobb performances were turned in by Justin Chambers and Eric Harris of Kell.  The duo ran key legs on Kell's victorious 4 x 100 team and ran strong in the 400; Chambers 49.61 - Harris 49.95.  Jaron Roberson of Hillgrove was the lone 9th grader in the finals of both the 400 and 200.  J ran personal best in both races (49.80) and (22.86).  He was joined by fellow freshman Chris Bowles on Hillgroves' 4 x 400 relay.

In Dekalb, more young Titans stood out.  A trio of sophomores had impressive starts to their county championships.  Stephen Hill of Miller Grove soared to victory in the long jump with a mark of 22-11.  Kenneth Gilstrap, II (also of Miller Grove) ran away from the pack in the finals of the 100 with a very impressive time of 10.74.  The Miller Grove 4 x 400 counted on strong legs from Gilstrap and Hill to nip the competition.  Their time of 3:16.11 is second only to the McEachern team led by fellow Titan, Wynne.

On the girls side of things, Takeia Pinckney of Columbia scored a double, bringing home the gold in both the 100 (12.11) and 200(24.96).

The last few days have been very exciting for our Titan high schoolers. All in all we are sending 11 athletes to the state championships (4 young women and 7 young men). Although they are wearing their school colors, they are all red and blue underneath! These young student athletes have worked hard all season and are poised to make some real noise over the next 2 weeks. Leading the way on the girl's side is Zandi DeBowles of Pope. Zandi dominated her region in three events. She captured victories in the long jump, high jump and the 300 hurdles. Joining Zandi in Albany will be LaCresha Styles of McEachern. Lil Bit scored an impressive victory in the 100 and captured 2nd in the long jump. Takeia Pinckney of Columbia was equally impressive on her way to victory in the 100 in her region. She is the defending state champion in the 200 and looks to add the 100 to her already impressive resume. LaChe Williams has been steady all season and got her ticket to Albany by securing second in the 200.

In boys action, several standout performances were seen.  Stephen Hill (pictured left) of Miller Grove got things started by soaring to a personal best in the long jump and 300 Hurdles.  Kenneth Gilstrap, II secured 2nd place in the 100 and joined Hill on the winning 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relays.

Joining Hill and Gilstrap at state will be Justin Chambers and Eric Harris of Kell, Miles Ottinot of South Gwinnett, Jaron Roberson of Hillgrove and Lonnie Burton and William Wynne of McEachern.

Chambers ran a season best time on his way to victory in the 400 and also captured the 200 title.  Harris and Chambers combined to lead Kell to the 4 x 100 title also.

Roberson is the only freshman of the bunch making it to state.  He ran a personal best on his way to 2nd place in the 400 in his region.

Ottinot was impressive in his victory in the 400.  The junior from South Gwinnett will be making his 2nd trip to state.

Last but not least were the two young men of McEachern.  Burton and Wynne put on quite a show.  Burton ran personal best in the 110 Hurdles (finishing 2nd)  and 300 Hurdles (3rd).  Wynne cruised to victory in the 110 hurdles and came back and ran the fastest time EVER by a high schooler in Georgia in the 300 hurdles.  His time of 36.03 was 4 tenths of a second faster than the previous best.  Burton and Wynne teamed up to lead McEachern to the 4 x 400 title as well with a state leading time.
