It was an instant classic! It was an incredible finish to the best season, spring or summer, in program history. It was not a game for the faint of heart. These are only a few ways to describe the Tigers 13-11 extra inning victory over the Northridge Grizzles. It took 10 innings but the Tigers were able to out last the Grizzles for their first ever STATE CHAMPIONSHIP! The championship game started as the Tigers hoped, jumping out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first. The first four Tigers reached and scored on three hits. The Grizzles would answer with a solo shot by the Grizzly’s second baseman to cut the lead to 4-1. The Tiger would respond with a run of their own in the second. The 5-1 lead would hold up until the bottom of the third when Northridge’s second baseman once again stepped to the plate and took a first pitch fastball over the leftfield fence to cut the lead to 5-3. Again, the Tigers would answer with one run but would give up two more in the bottom half of the frame. After five innings, the score was 6-5 Tigers. In the top of the sixth, Evan Genders would begin to heat up and carry the Tigers on his shoulders. With one runner on, Genders crushed a 2-0 pitch deep over the leftfield fence. The Tigers had a three run lead but as was the case all afternoon, the Grizzles would battle back and tie the game 8-8 at the end of six innings. In the seventh, both teams would go quietly and no runs scored. In the top of the eighth, Gender led off with a walk and Josh Tinnon stepped to the plate. Tinnon roped a first pitch fastball deep over the right fielder’s head. As the fielder gave chase the ball bounced hard away from him and Tinnon was off to the races. It was Josh’s THIRD in the park homerun of the postseason. Tigers 10-8! The resilient Northridge squad would not be phased and stay the course. The leadoff batter singled and the next two batters were retired. However, the Grizzles second baseman was stepping to the plate. One out away from the state championship, the Northridge player took 2-2 outside pitch the opposite way, for yep you guessed it, his third homerun of the game. Game tied at 11-11 going into the 10th, Lance Hernandez led off the inning with a walk, Cody Simmering and Ryan Silva would hit back to back singles. The bases were loaded with no outs but the next two batters were retired and no runs scored. It remained bases loaded and two outs for Evan Genders who stepped to the plate. Genders would stroke a first pitch fastball right down the leftfield line past the third baseman scoring two runs! As the fans, held their breath, senior Brandon Burke came in relief with a two run lead. Brandon retired two of the first three Grizzle hitters. With a runner on first and the tying run at the plate, Burke delivered a curve ball that was hit sharply but right at the Centerfielder Ryan Silva…….FINAL 13-11! The game was an instant classic and will certainly we go down as the top game in program history. TIGER STATE CHAMPIONS!!!! Over 35 players participated in the event. Due to the overwhelming participation by the TIGERS, the local elks club was able to increase the number of food basket deliveries from 90 last year to over 107 boxes this holiday season!
Throughout the two-day event, Elks Club members could be heard describing the players as "wonderful" "unbelievable" and "terrific". Pat Kennedy and Bob Heller, the food drive organizers, stated they cannot wait until next season to have the TIGERS return. By the end of Friday night, the players were thanked by a standing ovation from the Elks members who were present. There is no doubt that each player made a tremendous impact not only on the families who received the food baskets but also the members of the Elks Club. Thank you to all the players who participated. We look forward to continuing this annual tradition with the Elks once again next Christmas. Again, another example why Holy Family High School is such a special place and the TIGER baseball program is one of the best not only on the field but off too!!
