History put together from the 2005 Season:
One page is not even close to enough room to do justice to the football history of games played between these two storied programs.Just since 1989 these are probably two of the most winning teams in Central Texas and together they have brought home six State Championships in this short time period.
Many of the games played between Thorndale and Bartlett have been hard fought, close affairs with the district title hanging in the balance. Last year Thorndale won to Bartlett 27-6 and later claimed the District Championship, and Bartlett was the runner-up. Tonight's game is no exception with Bartlett comin in undefeated in district, while Thorndale has just one loss.
Thorndale has played only Thrall more times than Bartlett, as we have found 62 mettings between the two schols since 1929. The overall series has been just as close as many of the games, with Bartlett holding a slight advantage with 31 wins to Thorndale's 28. There have been 3 ties. They have met in the playoffs only once.
The two teams played each other for 48 straight years from 1952-1999. Then they did not play for two years before renewing the series in 2002. Below are the scores of all of the games we have found since 1929.

In 1977 Coach Dale Norris' Bulldogs hosted Bartlett in the fourth district game of the year. Thorndale was undefeated and lead the district race while Bartlett 2 and 1. Thorndale took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on Kevin McCoy's 64- yard run. Bartlett responded with a 57 yard scoring drive to tie the score 7-7 at halftime. In the third quarter McCoy again scored on a 72-yard run, and Michael Miller's second extra point gave Thorndale a 14-7 lead. Late in the fourth quarter, Bartlett then scored another touchdown on a 3- yard run to cut Thorndale's lead to 14-13. Bartlett faked the extra point as the holder pitched to a running back who threw a pass into the end zone. Bartlett's reciever caught the ball but was ruled out of the back of the end zone and Thorndale held on for the 14-13 win. There are some, including Thorndale's own Robert Lindemann who played for Bartlett that night, that thought the reciever was in bounds on the two point play. But, as we all know, the officials are never wrong!!!
In 1989 Coach Don Cowan's Bulldogs went to play Bartlett with both teams undefeated in district and 7-0 on the year. What transpired that night, in front of an overflow crowd that stood 4 to 5 layers deep in back of the end zone, was the greatest high school football game these eyes have ever seen.
Bartlett took a 12-0 lead and held until only 27 seconds were left in the first half. Then from the Bartlett 30, Thorndale pulled off the hitch and pitch play with Michael Street throwing to Jon Simank, who then pitched to Jackie Ware, and Ware ran it in for the touchdown. Bartlett still led at the half 12-7.
In the third quarter Thorndale scored two touchdowns on a pass to Justin Hood and a Street run, and took a 19-12 lead. But,Bartlett scored again at the end of the quarter to cut the lead 19-18.
At the start of the fourth quarter Bartlett scored again on 6 yard run, capping a 76-yard drive. Trailing 24-19, Thorndale went on a 72-yard drive that ended with Simank cradling a 6-yard pass bewtween two defenders in the end zone. This score turned out to be the difference but the game was not secure until Ware intercepted a Bartlett pass at Thorndale's 39 yard line with a 1:17 to play.
This 25-24 victory propelled Thorndale to the District Championship. Later, Thorndale and Bartlett met again in the State Quarterfinals. The second game was not nearly as close as the first, as Thorndale won 21-7 and went on to win the State Championship in Abeline, with a 42-24 victory over Sudan.

Holland's visit to Thorndale tonight marks the 22nd meeting in football between the two school since 1932. We know they did not play from 1929-1931, and it is thought that 1922 was the first meeting ever, however, a little more research is needed to confirm it as fact. We do know that Thorndale has won 15 of 21 meetings recorded and that Thorndale has never lost a district game to Holland, winning all 14 district games that have been played.
The two teams played each other on and off again from 1932 through 1959 and were both in District 35-B in 1948 and 1949, also they were bothe in District 37-B in 1950. In 1951 Thorndale moved to class A and the two teams were not in the same district again until 1986. The bulldgos have won the last 11 games played against the hornets since 1986, as Holland has not defeated Thorndale in football since 1959. Below are the scores of all games played between Thorndale and Holland since 1932.
In 1995 Coach Don Cowan's Bulldogs hosted the Holland's Hornets in the third district game of the year. In that game, the Hornets proved to be no match for the State bounde Bulldogs as THorndale routed the Hornets by the score of 74-0. This is one of the largest margins of victory that Thorndale has had in any football game and it was the 24th win in a row for the Bulldogs dating back to 1994. THe 1995 Bulldogs went on to win District 25-a Championship and advanced all the way to the state Championship game undefeated. On a cool evening in Brownwood, Thorndale played Roscoe for the state championship. A very competitive Roscoe team took the lead, only to have the Bulldogs bounce back and win the game 14-7, and claim the 1995 Class A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP. This was the second state championship in a row for the Bulldogs and the third over all in football. This game also was the climax of Thorndale's longest winning streak of 32 games in a row.
Congratulations once again to the 1995 Bulldog football team and the 1996 Bulldog Baseball team whom both won State Championships. Welcome back to Thorndale for homecoming and your 10-year reunion. We hope you really enjoy your time here together.
Last year the Bulldogs went to Holland to play the Hornets. Storms were brewing as the game began and right at halftime the stroms arived as the teams left the field. Thorndale was already leading 43-0 and it looked like the storms would last for a while so the decision was made at halftime to call the game a final with Thorndale winning the game by the halftime score of 43-0. This was not the first time however that the Bulldogs and Hornets took the field in Holland but did not complete the game.
In 1939 Coach D.M. Telford's Bulldogs went to Holland to play Hornets. In those years officials had to be agreed upon by both teams prior to the game. Apparently Coach Telfor tried to find out from Holland who the officials were going to be but he could not get an answer, so the Bulldogs went to Holland without knowing who they would be. Upon arrival Coach Telford found out who they were and was not pleased so he sought and agreement with Holland's Coach Cowan to be able to quit if at any time he was not happy with the officiating. This was refused after the coin flip so Coach Telford took his team off of the field and back to Thorndale without playing the game. Holland viewed this game as a Thorndale loss by forfeit, saying that the coin flip constituted the start of the game. Thorndale still sees it as a game that was just never played.

History put together from the 2004 Season:
Tonight's football game between Burton and Thorndale is only the eighth meeting ever between the two schools. They first met in a 1986 district game when Burton came to Thorndale and lost to the Bulldogs 61-0. 1986 was the first of four district realignments, including this year, that put the two schools in the same football distrcit. There was one non-district game played between the two schools. That was in 1995 when they met in a Bi-District playoff game in Caldwell. Thorndale's 59-0 win was the first of six playoff victories for the Bulldogs of 1995. The last win was a 14-7 victory over Roscoe in the State Championship game in Brownwood. With this victory Thorndale claimed a third State Championship.
Thorndale has won all seven of the previous meetings with Burton. Four of the wins have been by shutout, and twice Burton has scored just 8 points. Last year Burton scored 13 points, the most it has ever scored on Thorndale. The 13 first half points gave the Panthers the halftime lead, but the Bulldogs stormed back in the second half to win the game 34-13.
Since this is homecoming week, we wanted to feature three honor year football teams from Thorndale's past. The three teams we are featuring are the 1944, 1974, and 1994 Thorndale Bulldogs.
The 1944 Bulldogs were coach by Weldon Gilchrist and were in District 20-B, a six-team district. Two of the district teams, Florence and Round Rock forfeited to Thorndale. The other thre were Thrall, Granger, and Marble Falls. The Bulldogs defeated Thrall 53-7 and Granger 45-0. However, they had lost at Marble Falls, 12-0, and failed to win the district title. This was the only loss in 1944 for the Bulldogs as they finished with a 10-1 record but failed to make the playoffs. The non-district wins were over Franklin, Troy, Burnet, Somerville, Lott, and Cameron.
The 12 points scored by Marble Falls were the most points scored against the 1944 Bulldogs, in fact they allowed only one touchdown in each of three other games. The rest of the games were won by shutout. The 1944 Dogs gave up a total of only 32 points all year, making them probably the best defensive team ever in Thorndale not to make the playoffs.
In 1974 Thorndale hired a new football coach. His name was Mike Chancey. He took over a football program that had been down for many years. Thorndale had won only 4 games in the previous two seasons and had a losing record in 11 of the past 14 seasons dating back to 1960.
With so much losing, bad things were usually expected to happed in football games for Thorndale and Coach Chancey must have known this somehow. The firtst game of the 1974 season was Franklin. The Bulldogs had played Fanklin the previous four seasons and had not won any of the games, failing to even score a point in any of the games. Before the kickoff Coach Chancey told the players not to get down even if bad things happened early in the game. He said not to get down even if Franklin ran the opening kickoff back. Well, guess what happened. Franklin did run the opening kickoff back and led 6-0. Coach Chancey just laughed after the kickoff and fans thought "here we go again."
But Chancey was only laughing at the irony of the situation because he believed he had developed a very good football team, and that he had. Thorndale held Franklin scoreless the rest of the game while scoring two touchdowns of its own and won the game 14-6. The 1974 team finished with a record of 8-2, and tied for the District 28-A Championship. This was the first time that Thorndale had won any part of a district title and only the third time in 29 seasons.
Chancey only coached for three years in Thorndale but his teams never had a losing record, as they compiled an overall record of 21-8-1 in three seasons. A winning tradition was started again by the 1974 Bulldogs, as Thorndale has had only 3 losing seasons in the past 30 years since then. Many credit Coach Chancey with turning around Thorndale's football fortunes, from a losin program to a winning program, a feat that is much easier said than done.
The 1994 Bulldogs were coached by Don Cowan and were in District 25-A. The Bulldogs had dropped down from AA where in 1993 they were a playoff team with a 9-2 record. The season looked very bright for the 1994 Dogs and they turned it into the bright, shining gold of a Football State Championship with a 16-0 overall record.
The well-balanced team was strong both offensively and defensively. Only 5 of 16 teams they plays scored more than one touchdown agaisnt them, while 34 points is the least the Bulldogs scored in any game. In the five district games Thorndale outscored its opponents 287-7. While on the year outscoring the opponents 801-101.
The 1994 teams shining moment came in December, on a cool, crisp Saturday afternon in Temple, where they played Crawford for the State Championship. A talented Crawford team fought very hard but in the end they were no match for the Bulldogs as they won Thorndale's second State Championship in football by the score of 36-13.
Congratulations once again to the 1994 Bulldogsand wlcome back to Thorndale for homecoming and your 10-year reunion of your State Championship. We hope you enjoy your time together here.

Football History----Thorndale vs. Thrall
Friday's football game between Thorndale and Thrall marks the seventieth meeting, since 1931, between the two schools. After Thorndale defeated Thrall at home 7-6 in 1931, the game was played on and off untill 1936. In 1936 Thorndale's 25-0 win,in Thrall, started a stretch of 56 years that the game was played at least once each year, with the exception of 1942 when Thorndale did not have a team, due to the inability to find a coach, because of WWII. That stretch ended in 1992 when the game was not played for two years. Thorndale leads the overall series 41-26, with 2 ties, since 1931.
Recently, Thorndale has dominated the series, winning 11 in a row and 24 of the last 26 games. Thorndale has won 9 in a row at home dating back to 1983.
Many games in the series won't be forgotten, but two of the most memorable were played in the last two years. In 2002 Thrall hired a new coach, Tommy Reaux. With the new coach came new players and a sense of optimism in Thrall for their football fortunes. Some success was immediate, as Thrall won their first 9 games of the season and was thought by many to be the class of the district.
Even with a very tough non-district schedule, Coach Gray Jack's Bulldogs were also doing very well having won eight in a row after an opening season loss to Hearne. The Bulldogs and Tigers, both undefeated in district, would meet for the final regular season game in Thrall to determine the district championship.
Thrall scored first in the game, and it looked like Thorndale could be in trouble, especially since Thrall's defense was not yet yielding many points all year and their offense had at times seemed unstoppable. But the Tigers had not played a team like the mighty Bulldogs of 2002.
After Thrall's first score, Thorndale effectively shut down the Tigers vaunted offense, allowing only one other score the rest of the game. Meanwhile, it was Thorndale's high-powered offense that was unstoppable this November night. The Bulldogs scored 35 unanswered points in the first half, and scored 40 more in the second half to ruin Thrall's undefeated season with a 75-13 victory, and Thorndale became the undisputed District 27-A Champions of 2002.
Coach Jack's Bulldogs advanced to the State Quaterfinals where they finally lost to West Sabine 28-14. This is as far as any Thorndale team has ever gone in the playoffs, other than the three State Champion teams, so the 2002 Bulldogs made their mark as one of the best football teams ever in Thorndale history.
In 2003 Thrall came to Thorndale in the last game of the season looking to avenge the previous seasons loss, complete an undefeated regular season, and claim the undiputed district championship.
Thrall returned many players from their 2002 squad, while Thorndale returned only a few. The injury plagued Bulldogs went into the game with a 4-5 record and with and no chance of winning district or going to the playoffs. Many thought this would surely be the year Thrall broke Thorndale's winning streak. The question didn't seem to be whether Thrall would win, but how bad Coach Reaux's Tigers would beat the Bulldogs. But, the fired up Bulldogs had other ideas on this night.
The entire game was very close, with the battered and bruised Bulldogs fighting tooth and nail with the talented Tigers. The outcome wasn't for sure until the final buzzer had proved that the pride within the Bulldogs had won them one last game 33-28, and had dropped the Tigers to a District Co-Championship and had ruined their perfect season once again. This was Coach Jack's last game in Thorndale and he left having never lost to Coach Reaux's Tigers.

Football History----Thornale vs. Lexington
Tonight's football game between Thorndale and Lexington marks the forty-fourth meeting, since 1934, between the two schools. Since in many of the years, including this year, Thorndale has been in a smaller school district, only twenty-one of the forty-four games have been district games. Thorndale leads the series in district games played 11 to 9, with 1 tie. The Bulldogs and Eagles have never met in the playoffs.
Last year the Lexington program had the games listed and other than a couple of score differences our records are the sames as
theirs, with one exception. The 1966 game was a 14-14 tie with the Thorndale scoring first on a double reverse pass play. Last year's program showed this game as a Lexington win and that is incorrect. We also found games played in 1935, 1939, 1945, and 1949 that were not in the program last year. Below is our record of the scores since 1934.
One of the games not listed last year was the 1945 game. That year coach Weldon Gilchrist's Bulldogs beat the Eagles 27-0 in the last regular season game of the year. This was a warm-up game for the Dogs as they had already won the District 24-B Championship by defeating Thrall, Granger, and Round Rock. This was the first undisputed District Championship that Thorndale had ever won and the Lexington game finished an undefeated regular season for the Dogs with a record of 8-0.
Thorndale's first trip to the playoffs was next and the game was played at home with A & M Consolidated coming to town to play the Bulldogs. The game was no contest as Thorndale won easily 37-6 to claim the Bi-District Championship. Back then Bi-district was as far as Class B played, so Thorndale finished the 1945 season with it's first undefeated season with a record of 9-0. The 1945 team only allowed 32 points against them all year and was surely one of the best football teams in Thorndale's storied history.

Interesting Fact:
Since 1980 Thorndale has won 10 of the last 12 games played against Lexington in Thorndale, including the last 3 in a row.
Lexington's only 2 wins here in this time period were 7-0 in 1986 and 28-21 in 1997.

Thorndale leads series 23-19-1

Football History ---Thorndale vs. Bremond---

The game this Friday against Bremond is only the seventh meeting of all time between the two schools. All of the games have been non-district games, and the two schools have never met in the football playoffs.
The series dates back to 1974 when Mike Chancey was the new head coach of the Bulldogs. In a game played in Thorndale, Chancey's Bulldogs shut out the Tigers by a score of 33-0. In a 1975 rematch, in Bremond, the game ended in a 6-6 tie.
The two schools would not meet again on the football field until 1986. That year the Bulldogs, coached by Gregg Dupree, went to Bremond and lost 6-30 to a very good Bremond team. This game was the first of four meetings in a row for the two schools.
In 1987 Bremond came to Thorndale to play the Bulldogs and their new head coach Douglas Hodges. The Tigers shut out the Bulldogs 0-14 that night to hand the Bulldogs their third straight shutout to start the season. Thorndale then rebounded to win six of the next seven games to claim the 13-A West Zone Championship. In 1988 Hodges' Bulldogs went to Bremond and again lost to the Tigers 14-27.
In 1989 Don Cowan returned to coach the Bulldogs after leaving to coach at Lake Travis for four years. Bremond came back to Thorndale to play the mighty Bulldogs of 1989. Thorndale beat Bremond 35-12 in the second game of the season. This victory was the second of sixteen wins in a row for the 1989 Bulldogs. Thorndale culminated its undefeated season by winning its first football state championship with a 42-24 victory over Sudan to claim the 1989 Class A State Championship.
Currently Bremond leads the all-time series with 3 wins to 2 losses for Thorndale, and there has been 1 tie.

Interesting Facts:

The Thorndale Bulldogs have a streak of 82 straight home games in which they have not been shutout. This dates back to the third game of the 1987 season when "guess who" shut them out... The Bremond Tigers 0-14. The last time Thorndale was shutout on the road was in 1997 when Don Rives' Bulldogs lost at Franklin 0-27 in the second to last game of the season.
