First League Game successful !

Edinburgh Thistle's team - with subs - braved the conditions of Liberton High School today to compete with the pride of St Andrews University (Saints).   Thistle took command of the game in the first half,  but a show of determination in the second by an undermanned Saints team gave rise to fierce competition.   A welcome return to the team by Cosh and Murdo, and relief that the warm-up injury sustained by Ms Wills was a temporary distraction.

Half time : 6-1;   Full Time  13-5

Saturday, November 1
Clubs Tournament

The slightly undermanned Thistle team (10 players - but taking a welcome addition of Pete and Ashley from Aberdeen Lacrosse to help out),  took on 6 other teams from around Scotland today in the National Clubs Tournament.  Sunny St Andrews on All Saints Day was a treat for lacrosse players normally wrapped up warm.

6 games in a round robin format led to Thistle beating St Andrews, Capital, GHK, Dundee Uni & Aberdeen Lacrosse Club, Aberdeen Uni.  However Edinburgh Uni were too strong and made use of their finesse in shooting and went on to win the cup from Thistle, the defending champions.    A lot of lacrosse during the day and Thistle did well to come second.

Saturday, November 8
Victory against Edinburgh Uni 2's

Match organiser Nikster was on form getting a full 12 out for this game - and what a morning of sunshine it was at Peffermill.    Scoring was all about precision shooting with few missed chances and every single player in the Thistle team contributed to a resounding 18-0 victory, with some excellent tackles-on-the-catch and ground ball pick ups to add to the mix.

Well played !

On a winning run in local derby

Edinburgh Thistle met against local opposition Capital Lacrosse Club and within seconds Thistle newcomer Louise had grabbed the ball at centre and delivered the ball to create an immediate goal for Thistle.

Thistle made a brave attempt at a tactic involving creation of space for one of the team in front of goal, but on the whole enjoyed the freedom of quick passing and shooting better - less thinking !!    In order to put Suzie's Wednesday practice to best effect, there was some 3 on 2 attacking against us too .. perhaps slightly less than intentional ... things to learn from.

Next up Glasgow Uni in 2 weeks time ... all are looking forward to it !

Glasgow Uni league game postponed
League game postponed.  To be rescheduled in Spring 09.

Sunday, February 1
Uni Defeat Thistle

Edinburgh University 1st team (EU 1) were understrength in numbers but still carried the day on the field.  Edinburgh Thistle  (ET) lost chances through goal scoring but played some awesome defense, midfield attack to create a keenly fought battle .. from which no blood was seen, but certainly both sides came away bruised .. despite the no-body contact rule !

A low-scoring match (3-5 at the whistle), with much end-to-end play and, from Thistle's point of view, every single person contributed to a team effort .. disappointed but not overawed.     Well done to match organiser Julie Barr for raising the team.   An introduction for Emma, Cathy and Ally to the league team sheet .. well done to them.

Saturday, February 7
Finalists at the National Indoor (Mixed) Tournament

Edinburgh Thistle's team had a great tournament at the Jack Kane Centre for this indoor event - making it to the final and eventually beaten by Edinburgh University.

 Well organised by Capital !

Saturday, February 14
Valentine's Day game postponed
The national league game against Aberdeen University has been postponed due to snow.  Due to be rescheduled, possibly Feb 28th.

MacRobert success stories

Edinburgh Thistle's mixed lacrosse team pulled out all the stops to hold the MacRobert Shield for this invitational tournament.      The round robin event saw victories over GHK, Aberdeen City, Aberdeen Uni, Durham Uni and Capital .. ending in a close final with Durham where Thistle turned up tempo a notch or two.   Great play and a deserved victory.

The Nikster and Clauds organised the tournament night out pub (after Thistle's social Italian job) .. then onto Sunday for some ...

Sunday's event (ladies tournament) pooled the combined resources of CA-THISTLE (Capital and Thistle) into a round robin section with Junior Scotland A,  Edinburgh Uni 2, Leeds Penguins and Aberdeen University.   A draw against Edinburgh Uni 2's  and close victories against Leeds and Junior Scot A's allowed CA-Thistle to progress as top of the group to the semi-finals.     St Andrews Uni gave CA-Thistle a real run out, but some excellent double-teaming and clinical shooting put CA-Thistle on track for a final spot,  well above all our expectations.  Rachel from Capital played a new position today (being the top goalie of the day, she 'volunteered' for both semi and final too - and was excellent in both).  The final was really close but Edinburgh University, with more fresh legs  (they hadn't played yesterday and all CA-Thistle had !), they deserved the victory and CA-Thistle remained happy being outscored by only 2 - having made it to the final.   Celebrating every bit of possession must have helped ... !!

A huge thank you to Fiona who did the admin and organisation on Thistle's behalf for the day, and to helpers and umpires on both days who came to make the weekend one of real lacrosse enjoyment.   Even the sun came out.
