PHS Athlete Slighted by Paper

PHS athlete slighted by paper

Parkersburg News and Sentinel

I am writing with regards to the AAA All-State Volleyball team article that was recently printed in the Sunday paper. I find it very disappointing that the sports writers of your paper decided to use the Associated Press All-State article. Is it really that difficult to write an article about our local athletes who earned this All-State honor?

Having that said, Parkersburg High School's Kayla Lowers earned this honor for the second year in a row and her name was mentioned once in the AP article. Nothing was mentioned about her number of kills, service aces, digs, or blocks. Nothing! The A and AA All-State teams were well covered by the Parkersburg paper. Why not get the same treatment for the AAA?

After talking to a certain member of your staff, I was told certain sports writers throughout the state cover the all-state articles. This person happened to cover the A and AA All-State teams. Fine, that's great, and I congratulate those girls for their accomplishments. What I don't understand is why a separate article wasn't written by your staff after seeing the AP article only mentioned her once. What a slap in the face!

I want to congratulate Kayla Lowers on an awesome senior volleyball season. Not only did she lead her team with 684 kills, 89 aces, and 418 digs, she was also voted as the MSAC Player of the Year. During her career at PHS, she accumulated over 1,700 kills and was named to several All-Tournament teams, including three times at the state volleyball tournament in Charleston.

Congratulations to Kayla on her All-State honor. It was well deserved.
