The relationship between work and success we are all taught as youngsters —that if you work hard you’ll be successful — is not true. The concept is that if you work hard you improve your chances for success, but if you don’t work hard, you can never be successful..

WE ALWAYS WORK HARD!

Announcements

Exceptional Players! The Strikers are looking for one or two more exceptional field players to broaden and supplement their roster for the 2009 and Spring and Summer seasons. If you are interested, please e-mail Coach Eric at http://www.eteamz.com/admin2/mailtthecoach@optonline.net.

Rankings!   What do youth soccer rankings mean?  Are they a reflection of the level of the team or the players on that team or are they simply a tool used for bragging rights?  Some teams, especially their parents and coaches, utilize soccer rankings exclusively.  As a Tournament Director for nearly ten years, I have first hand experience with this.

While we are occasionally reminded of our team’s ranking, we do not follow team rankings as an indicator of our development as a team.  Rather, we determine our development and success by many factors including: the small out of pocket costs versus the excellent training we receive and the high number of tournaments we attend; the number of players that have stayed on the Strikers and have returned to the Strikers; the competition we play and just how successful we are against top level teams; the compliments we receive about our play and behavior from our competition, spectators, tournaments and leagues; the incredible amount of fun we have as players, parents and coaches; and eventually, the number of Strikers that will go on to play soccer in College if they choose to do so.

We are careful not to read too much into soccer rankings.  First, some rankings are based on the accumulation of tournament points.  Realistically, a team could “buy” themselves a better ranking by just signing up for more tournaments than other teams to collect these points.   While rankings are a snapshot of relative tournament success, it does not accurately reflect the many variables that measure a team’s true progress.

Second, ranking is the wrong focus for development.  Good soccer players develop because they love to play the game and not because of rankings.  Focusing on a high ranking can add to overconfidence as you tend to focus on defending a ranking instead of on development.  Without the focus on rankings, our team continues to improve efforts at training sessions and avoids the high turnover that “higher ranked” teams endure.  As such, we continue to improve every year and have still not peaked.

These comments are not intended to support nor contradict the ranking services.  The current ranking services commonly used are: GotSoccer, Soccer In College and National Soccer Ranking.
