: 2009 Fall Tryouts Info
![]() |
Sorting through the tryout maze that has occurred every year at the start of a Michigan AAU Girls Basketball season has been a daunting task for most, at one time or another (both players AND parents.) The actual "tryout" itself, the event, is not the issue -- athletes perform well enough to make the team or they don't, right? Or have you the reader been part of a tryout for a team that seemed more of a formality or a facade; than an actual, regimented process to choose a team?
We all know that most teams have a "core group" or nucleus of personnel that return from year-to-year. And for those teams, the coach probably intends to keep the mainstays, and is only looking for 1-2 more kids. Going to a group tryout for that team would be a colossal waste of time. There are other examples, of course -- tryouts where too few kids show up for a team, or those that do, are not talented enough for the aforementioned core group of returners, etc. There's a little bit of everything for just about everyone when it comes to Tryout Day.
Part of the reason is that over 90% of clubs statewide have always marked their calendar for the same day to have tryouts. There are only so many hours in a single day, and the locations of the different team's tryouts range across the area. Inevitably, there will be times that conflict, or locations that you simply cannot reach in the given time -- and the player will have to choose which team (which tryout) they want to go to. If you're lucky, you might make two different ones -- but how good are you capable of performing be attending #2, after going all-out in #1? Add to this, the complication that ensues when team #1 offers you a spot with them on site; and you tell them you're grateful -- but wanted to go to the other tryout before you made a choice. What does team #1 do? If they're smart, they offer that spot to someone else once you leave, because there's no guarantee you will return and play for them. And it's not a matter of trust or faith, just the need to populate a roster and get the season going, not "hold a spot and hope."
Tryouts are a requirement that Michigan AAU makes each club conform to. It is mandatory that all member clubs hold OPEN TRYOUTS (yeah, okay!) Which are supposed to mean that all spots are -- OPEN. When's the last time that you went to a tryout where the returning kids had to try out, too? Where they had to commit on site, too? Where a returning kid actually got cut? If you have ever been to a Legion Tryout, you may have seen these very things -- because we always held tryouts that were truly Open. If you were offered a spot, as noted above, we asked for a commitment (financial and binding) to secure your spot with us, immediately. If you did not, we offered the spot to someone else.
Besides the REAL TRYOUT seems to be the "Open Gym", nowadays (well, at least it's "Open!") We determined after a number of years holding open gyms that players and parents were using them to evaluate the potential of the group, based on their visual impressions of the other attending athletes. They'd come, participate/watch, and make mental notes on the other girls, and whether or not they thought the group was "good enough" for them, or would be "competitive" in the season to come. What they were unable to evaluate, much if at all, was the strength of the organization and our plans, and the expertise of our coaches and staff. And they certainly weren't turning the microscope on themselves, within the context of these two areas.
.
It is our contention that the Open Gym model is an outdated way of generating genuine interest in a team for the coming year
.
We believed our tryouts were the most straightforward, even, and fair operation of its kind in the state. This is the way Legion had picked teams for the last decade; and we're not doing them that way anymore.
We're not doing them the other way either. There's no need to follow the "copycat" mentality that is so pervasive in Michigan AAU. Its part of why we believe membership statewide, and the quality of the Michigan product (truly talented players, quality volunteers and successful teams) is lessened, of late. Our organization has been around for 20+ years; and we believe three reasons for our longevity are: a desire to stay current and relevant, we recognize opportunities for improvement and innovative thinking or approaches, and we take bold steps that force competing clubs to action. So, we are not having "tryouts" (in the traditional sense) any more. Basketball players that are looking for memberhsip on a Legion-S.E.L.E.C.T. team will go through an entirely different routine, and it's not for everyone. But the mass group of student-athletes are not who's being spoken to in these lines, anyway.
No.
We're talking to those select few who have identified an internal desire to improve their craft and seek challenges others would not. Interested athletes will find out how significant the skill and talent gap is between being high-school capable, and college-ready.
Any youngster who believes that what we are offering with Legion-S.E.L.E.C.T. membership, and what has been described in this article and other places on our website, is what they are looking for -- should contact our staff right away: legionbasketballgroup@yahoo.com This initial correspondence will open the lines of communication, and let us both ask some general questions of each other -- Legion about the young person, and the prospective player, or parent about us. If interest remains high on both sides, the youngster would then be invited to a small-group workout (we call them Capacity Training Sessions. We are the only organization in the state offering something like this -- a no-pressure, non-committal way to get a genuine, lasting interface (instead of the cursory glance afforded at an open gym) with our coaches and staff. It enables both player and parent to witness us in action, doing what we are experienced in, in the environment we are accustomed to. You'll get a vivid, full-color snapshot of what the days to come would be like, and a real impression of the benefits to you. What it really is: is a way for you to try us out, while getting doses of valuable skills-intensive work. It's our unique way to provide some court time on, and some discussion with, things you've never done before. We have every confidence you will enjoy every minute of it. This initial workout is offered at no charge; but attending any future days would constitute a commitment to membership, and we would need to collect fees and payment for the season, prior to the next scheduled session.
.
Better than "Open Gyms", CAPACITY TRAINING SESSIONS will expose athletes to specific regimens and drill work to determine your Capacity: your ability to perform and produce, your power to learn and retain
.
Depending on the situation, you can request an individual/personal workout with the coaching staff. In this case, we would need to collect payment for a percentage of the gym rental in advance; we would then put the athlete through an intensive 45-50 minute workout on various "next-level" skill areas. For these sessions, the prospective athlete will be on the court with former Legion members (current, or former college players) aiding in the drill work. This will provide a true perspective on the speed, physicality, and approach for the work load to come. If you are interested in this option, let us know in your email.
The operating tempo and setup for these sessions will be of our own design. We're not trying to imitate the people from Basketball Workshop, Paul Tripp, or the staff of Get Skillz. We're not trying to duplicate the teaching style of Jason Otter, Greg Grant, or the mode of McCracken, Metro-D, or others. Legion-S.E.L.E.C.T. has an appreciation for these people and their efforts in helping youngsters; but we also believe that there is no "cookie-cutter" solution to this type of training. Athletes should come to our gym with an open mind; attentive, excited, and ready to work in ways they have never done before.
As we are setting the tone for the season to come, part of which is granting as exact a look as we can at the learning environment; we ask that all players be punctual, shoes tied, stretched, loose, and ready to go at the appointed time. Legion-S.E.L.E.C.T. is currently considering a policy of "closed practices" to parents during the season; but for the time being (and especially at these first steps of our relationship) we welcome the parents into the session. What we ask in return is that you permit our coaches to coach your child during these sessions, without input (or interference) from you. Of course, our coach will provide feedback post-session; and questions or dialogue with any staff member after the session concludes is welcome.

~ NOW POSTED!! FALL 2009 TEAM INFO IS BELOW, CHECK BACK FOR UPDATES ~
Prior to coming out for a Legion-S.E.L.E.C.T. team, all athletes must be registered members with AAU. Beginning with the 2009/2010 Season, Legion is putting this responsibility in the hands of the player and/or parent (Legion used to include this membership fee along with our tryout fee, but since our tryout procedures have changed, so now this has also.) The link below will take you directly to the National AAU Website for athlete signup-membership. Please note: this DOES NOT make you a member of Legion-S.E.L.E.C.T., but will priovide you an AAU Membership Number and Card that will be good for the entire year. If you are not offered a spot with our organization, this same number/card can be used to join any Michigan AAU Girls Basketball Club in the state. This is a process you need only complete once, for the entire year (no need to complete again, come Springtime.) Contact a Legion Staff Member with any questions

TRYOUT TIMES FOR EACH AGE OFFERED
The following times are currently set for each age's tryout. We realize that we may not be the only club trying out these ages at these times, and that your interest with not just The Legion -- but another club, may make your choices more difficult. For those prospective players for whom The Legion is not your FIRST choice for AAU this season, we welcome the opportunity to share with you as much insight as we can about each and every facet of our club (without negative remarks about any other club) prior to each of the above-noted tryouts. We do so that you and others like you can make your decision on a secure basis with current information...even if that means we're not your choice.
Our newest offering is the Legion_S.E.L.E.C.T. brand of teams, and we are VERY excited to bring this much-needed team option and special union of features to Michigan Girls AAU Basketball. The S.E.L.E.C.T. teams will be formed of young ladies who are truly advanced, who want to be coached and work their craft (their game), place basketball as a high priority, and have college playing aspirations in mind. Please note: the S.E.L.E.C.T. teams are NOT the "A-team" for our organization. They are much much more than that. Legion does not have an "A-team" or "B-team", as each of our teams select athletes to make a competitive group. S.E.L.E.C.T. is above the conventional description of an "A-team" in personnel, operations, commitment, and more. It is not for everyone. For a complete overview of the Legion_S.E.L.E.C.T. brand and everything it is about, go to the S.E.L.E.C.T. Website: www.SELECT.legionbb.com

TRYOUT COSTS AND MONEY MATTERS
The online PreRegistration cost for Legion Tryouts varies with the timeframe (number of days ahead of Tryouts) you are PreRegistering. In essence, you "save money" by PreRegistering with us earlier than waiting to do so later, or on-site. We begin taking PreRegistration for players on January 25th. For those players the list of PreRegistration Fees below applies:
>> Starting January 25, 2009 -- Online PreRegistration for the March 22, 2009 Tryout is $15.00 per player.
>> Starting February 15, 2009 -- Online PreRegistration for the March 22, 2009 Tryout is $20.00 per player.
>> Starting March 08, 2009 -- Online PreRegistration for the March 22, 2009 Tryout is $25.00 per player.
>> Mail-in PreRegistration is $20.00 if postmarked by February 26th. We do not accept mail-in PreRegistration past that date.
>> Tryouts Registration paid on site is always $25.00.
These fees cover costs for rental of the tryout facility, materials and an AAU Card. The AAU Card cost alone is $14.00 and includes AAU Supplemental (excess) insurance for potential player injury, as well as other AAU benefits. Any club not charging enough tryout moneys to cover this fee may not be providing you with everything you are supposed to get in the process...BE SURE BEFORE YOU GO.
As mentioned above, we fully expect to fill rosters on March 22nd, 2009; all players will know BEFORE THEY LEAVE if they are selected for one of our teams. Each attending athlete will be informed of their status in a private and discrete manner. If you are offered a spot on one of our teams, a deposit on the players' season fees will be due immediately to hold your spot with us. These fees will include:
$ 65.00 Club Operations Fee (due from All Members)
$225.00 Uniforms Fee (due from New Members ONLY, needing both uniforms)
$ 80.00 Deposit on player's Team Fees (minimum amount requested from everyone)
__________________________________________________________
$370.00 TOTAL DEPOSIT (would be due from NEW MEMBERS needing both uniforms)
- OR -
$145.00 TOTAL DEPOSIT (would be due from Returning Members, needing no uniform)
Collection of these fees insures that uniforms arrive in due time (within 2-3 weeks), practices can begin immediately, tournaments can be registered for in due course, and lots more. If you have any questions about these fees and their specific purposes, please contact your team's coach.
Any player who is chosen and leaves our tryout without paying the full and correct fee above will FORFEIT HER SPOT. Collecting this deposit is the way we have used every year to establish commitment; and to begin the tasks of securing practice time, signing up for tournaments, ordering uniforms, etc. It is also for these reasons and others that all paid fees are NON-REFUNDABLE.
The complete TOTAL FEES for the entire 2008-09 Season of Legion Girls AAU Basketball, and Legion_S.E.L.E.C.T.; are different for each team, and will include EVERYTHING for participation for the whole year (you can find a listing and description of player benefits by contacting that team's coach through our main club email address.) The Club Operations (all Members) and Uniforms Fee (if you are a NEW Member) are total charges. The $80.00 portion of the above-mentioned deposit applies to the team fees discussed here. The balance will be due per the payment schedule set by the team and The Legion. We expect team season fees (of which the $80.00 is part) should amount to $225.00-$300.00 depending on the team. Legion_S.E.L.E.C.T. team fees are projected to be $300.00-$450.00 (though part of that will be covered by team fundraising and donations -- we are hoping to keep the out-of-pocket portion to $250.00 or thereabouts.)
Be advised: each Legion team has been encouraged by the Club Administration to promote at least one fundraiser in an effort to defray escalating costs, which are encountered each year (for gym time, tournaments, etc.) Players/families are expected to participate in the fundraiser, thus keeping (or further reducing) the per-player team fees costs low. Teams may also secure business sponsorships or donations to further aid in these efforts.
SPECIFIC TRYOUT PROTOCOL AND PROCEDURES
By design, the tryouts process can be daunting and stressful for some (parents and players alike!) Our tryouts have been regarded by many over the years as one of the best operations they've ever seen, and we intend to continue that tradition.
To facilitate smooth operations, we ask that each player adhere to the following requests:
1. BRING, don't wear your basketball shoes. Change shoes inside.
2. USE A BAG, keep all your belongings in it once the tryout begins.
3. NO BASKETBALLS, leave your ball at home, we're not responsible for it.
4. LIGHT & DARK, wear a white/light t-shirt and bring a black/dark one (reversibles are okay)
5. BREAK TIME, bring water and/or sports drink for breaks.
6. EQUIPMENT, also have a towel, extra socks, medication and other needs.
7. PRE-REGSITER for tryouts online using our secure-server; save time & give us a profile of you.
8. BE EARLY, unless you are Pre-Registered, be on site 30-35 min. early.
9. EAT SOMETHING, be smart, be healthy, be ready.
10. HAVE FUN, work hard - play hard - give it your best!
The following items are part of what will be evaluated by the coaching staff at each age's tryouts. Some items are of a more complex skill nature, and are obviously for the more advanced ages/players. Legion_S.E.L.E.C.T. Tryouts will also follow this model, but a more intense operating tempo will be in play. S.E.L.E.C.T. Tryouts will also run about 45 minutes longer:
OFFENSE FOOTWORK
>> Starts, Stops, Turns : Pivots : Stride : Screens : Ability to Face-Up to the Basket : Transition Movement : L-Cut : V-Cut : Curl Cut : Flare : Fade : Flash
DEFENSE FOOTWORK
>> Regular Stance : Slide : Denial Stance : Balance : Positioning : Transition Movement : X-Step : Agility : Body Control
REBOUNDING
>> Rebounding Basis : Box-Out Technique : Legal Position : Position of Hands : Angles : Outlet Passing : Ball Protection : Pressure-Release Dribble : Controlled Tip
SHOTS AND SHOOTING
>> R & L Hand Lay-ups : Power Lay-ups : Reverse Lay-ups : No-Dribble Lay-ups : Hook-Shot : Proper form : Jump Shooting : Shots off the Dribble : Catch and Shoot : Slow Fakes : Jab Fakes to Shoot : Free Throws %
GENERAL OFFENSE GAME UNDERSTANDING
>> Spacing : Passing Lanes : Shot Selection : Time and Score : Roles : Play Objectives : Response to Pressure
GENERAL DEFENSE GAME UNDERSTANDING
>> Aggressiveness : Effort and Hustle : Team Defense Understanding : Vision : Pressure Component : Denials, Deflections, Steals : Conversion : Switching
OTHER AREAS OF INTEREST
>> Ability to Learn Quickly : Ability to Adapt and Adjust : Communication : Speed in Execution : Intensity : Coachability : Attitude : Interaction with Team
Every player's approach to the actual tryout session should include consideration of the following guidelines:
1. REMEMBER...the coaches are looking at more than: Can you defend, dribble, pass and shoot? Demonstrating your interest during the in-between times in drills (waiting for your turn, hustling back in line, etc.) are examples of this.
2. LISTEN...to the instructions of the drills. We have no doubt that some will be very familiar, and others (by design) are meant to be different or challenging. Your ability to learn quickly and absorb the instructions is a key aspect of what is being evaluated.
3. CONCENTRATE...at all times. There may be other girls you know there which can naturally promote for some "good times", or maybe you're easily distracted, or shy. Try to minimize those occurrances and stay engaged in the moment.
4. DO YOUR BEST...at all the things we ask of you. If you make a mistake, learn from it -- and at your next turn, try to not make that same mistake again. Whether or not you are selected for our teams, we are still committed to help you get better.
5. ATTENTION...should be maintained on where you are, and what you are doing -- not on some other girl and what she's doing or how good you think she is, etc. Don't assume anything (anything) as far as what you think the coaches decisions and comments are about as the day unfolds.
NO ONE has a spot “saved” from last year; players from the tryouts’ host school do not “automatically” make the team; and tryout policies apply equally to all attending players. Most importantly, ALL SPOTS ARE OPEN (even girls who played last year must try out.) We’ve heard a lot of unbelieveable stories about other clubs’ tryouts (ie: 45+ girls trying out for only 1-2 spots) and we have one word for that: ridiculous. Those who continue to go to clubs like these may continue to get disappointed; or they could come to Legion tryouts and have a bona fide chance to make a team and play.
The skills and drills portions of the tryout are conducted by Legion coaches and assisted by area high school coaching staffs. Each team's head coach administrates the tryout drills at their session; everyone in the gym is involved in evaluating the players.
Additional information about the S.E.L.E.C.T. Tryouts can be found on the Legion_S.E.L.E.C.T. Team Site: www.SELECT.legionbb.com
FOR THE PARENTS
We're all on the same team. Because that's what we believe, we want the parents to be informed and involved in as much a way as we can have help in. In past seasons, we have scheduled a number of PRESEASON INFORMATION MEETINGS a few weeks out from the day of Tryouts. These are oriented to get interested and returning parents and players together with Legion Administration and Coaches for a brief but thorough presentation on our club; distribution of brochures and handouts; and of course, answering of any questions you might have. Over the years we have also hosted a number of Open Gyms; strictly for the purpose of getting prospective players together with returning players for some informal hoops.
Legion_S.E.L.E.C.T. Teams will not be offering "Open Gyms" in the traditional sense. Instead, there will be Capacity Training Sessions, unique to the S.E.L.E.C.T. offering for prospective players and parents, coaches and staff -- to provide a "snapshot" of what this experience will be. The schedule of those sessions, and a bit more information about the format, can be found on the S.E.L.E.C.T. Website: www.SELECT.legionbb.com
At the tryout, these efforts don't stop. Parents will be introduced to the coaches of their daughter's respective-aged team. And while the players are in tryouts, mom and dad will have the opportunity to converse with returning players' parents and also get additional questions answered by the on-site Legion Administrator on the tryout process and "what comes next."
Part of what comes next for the girls we choose and their parents is our Annual Tip-Off Meeting. This is the time we set aside to go over the whole season: rules, schedules, policies, money, gear orders, banquet, team pictures, publications, college scholarships, and a WHOLE lot more. Because this meeting is so essential; we do require some parent or guardian to be at this meeting -- representing the player (and we strongly suggest the players also attend.) This year's Team Tip-Off Meeting will be on March 30th, 2009 at Avondale Middle School; from 6:30pm-7:45pm. Make a note of it...
Well, that's about it! As portions of this information are modified (ie: tryout times, for each age) in the weeks ahead, the edits will be made to this section and others throughout the Legion, and Legion_S.E.L.E.C.T. Website. We very much want you to be certain you are up-to-date with dates, times and such; so check back here often as we get closer to T-Day (Tryouts-Day.)
Of course, long before tryouts -- we invite any player or parent to attend the Information Meetings or Open Gyms as they become scheduled. And to PreRegister for the tryouts, you can click on the Pre-Registration link on our home page. Last year, better than 64% of all players Pre-Registered; it really is the way to go. If you PreRegister, you can save at least $5.00 off of the onsite tryout fee, but only for a short time...
It is our hope that this information has been helpful. Should you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact us via e-mail, using the link on the Home Page.
