The Fury: 2006 News

Fury start season off with a win.
The Fury kicked off the 2006 season at Willow Creek ballpark with a close win on Friday night. The defense was great as the girls gave up only 3 runs in the 5th and final inning, shutting out the Lady Stars in the first 4 innings. The offense on the other hand was not so good with the Fury only scoring 4 runs and striking out a total of 9 times. All in all, a win is a win and that is what the Fury got with the final score being 4-3.

Fury get offense on track against Titans.
After a slow offensive start in the first game of the season the Fury came out in game #2 on fire at the plate. All 10 girls got at least one hit in this game as the Fury put up 19 runs in only 4 innings. The Titans opened up a 5-2 lead in the first inning but the Fury bats got hot in the 2nd inning and they outscored the Titans 17-5 over the last 3 innings. Katie Bailey, Lauren White and Shelby Wires each had 4 hits and combined to knock in 12 or the 19 Fury runs. As a team the Fury reached base 29 times in only 37 at bats. The Fury are now 2-0 on the season with the final score being 19-10.

Fury finnish 4th in Fountain City Spring Tournament.

Saturday started out great when the Fury scored 7 runs in the first inning against the Fountain City Phillies. They scored only 4 more runs the rest of the game but held on for an 11-4 win. The Defense was strong holding the Phillies scoreless the first 4 innings.

Things got rough in game number 2 when the Sevierville Scrappers came calling. The Scrappers opened up the game with 7 runs but the Fury countered with 5 runs of their own. After that the Fury's bats got cold and I mean real cold. The Scrappers went on to score 14 more runs as the Fury were only able to scrap for 1 more. The final score was 20-6.

In game #3 the Fury faced a Powell Lady Stars team that had only lost by 2 runs to the same Scrappers that beat the Fury by 14. But in this game the Fury came to play ball and held the Stars to only 5 runs for the game. The Fury offense was still a little slow but it was enough for the Fury to win the game by a score of 7-5.

Game 4 would be a tough one for the Fury as they would face off against an All-Star team from the Fury’s home park. The Knoxville Fusion was 3-0 going into this game but the Fury would not go down easy. This was a close game with the Fury having only 1 bad inning but in the end the Fusion won by a score of 11-3.

In the Tournaments Final game the Fury would face the Powell Sting for 3rd place and you could tell that the Fury did not have much gas left in the tank. The offense never got on track and the Fury could only muster up 2 runs. Again they had 1 bad inning on defense, but that was more then enough as the Sting beat the Fury by a score of 9-2.

In the end, this was a good learning experience for the girls. They played good enough to win all but 1 game on defense and just need to get their offense on track to prove what they are made of. Once they start doing just a few more thing right they will be a team to be reckoned with.

Back on Track!
The Fury got back on track with a big win against the Pink Panthers on Tuesday night. The offense was fantastic with 1 homerun each for Sara McFarland and Morgan Lyke, Lauren White added a tripple and every girl got a base hit in this game. The Pink Panters were no match for the Fury on this night as the Fury takes the win, 17-2.

Fury take one on the chin!
Nothing went right for the fury on Tuesday night as it took them 3 innings just to bat through the line up 1 time. The defense was great except for the 4th inning when the Fury made all 4 of their errors for the game and allowed the Lady Diamonds to score 7 runs. The bats were cold on this night and in the end the Lady Diamonds dominated the Fury and won by a score of 13-2.

Revenge is so sweet!
The Fury got a chance to get revenge on the Lady Diamonds on Tuesday night and took advantage of that opportunity. The first inning was slow again on this night but the bats got hot in the 2nd inning and the Fury put up 5 runs to take a 5-0 lead into the 3rd inning. The Lady Diamonds got some of those runs back when they scored 3 in the top of the third but the Fury was on a mission on this night and put up 5 more runs in the bottom of the 3rd. The Fury held on to that lead and won the game by a score of 10-7.

The coaches started a new tradition after the game by awarding offensive and defensive MVP softball stickers to go on the back of the girls batting helmets. Lauren White was the offensive MVP with 2 hits including a sharply hit triple in that all important 3rd inning. Abby hicks and Katie Bailey shared the defensive MVP award as each of them made great defensive stops in the game.

Fury wins first Tournament!
06_WCTourney_Team_Medals
The Willow Creek Tournament got off to a slow start with the rain from the previous night slowing things down and backing the entire tournament up 1 hour. That delay had no effect on the Fury as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead on the Dragon flies in the top of the first inning. The Dragon Flies did not score their first run until the 5th inning and this one was never in doubt. The fury won game one of the tournament by a score of 12-1.

In game #2 the Fury took on the Titans for a birth in the championship game. The Fury defense was outstanding in this one and the Fury only gave up 7 hits and 3 runs for the game. On the other hand the Fury banged out 13 hits and pushed 9 runs across the plate to win this on 9-3.

The Championship game ended the way the tournament started. In the top of the 2nd inning, the Titans were batting with 2 outs in a tied 1-1 game when the heavens opened up and poured what seemed like a million gallons of water onto the field. The director of the tournament called it a day and awarded the Fury the championship trophy since they were undefeated and had already beaten the Titans once in the tournament. This is the first tournament championship for the Fury.

Fury take out the Titans again.
The Fury played good defense yet again and had just enought offense to get the win over the Titans for the 3rd time this season on tuesday night. Sara McFarland led the offense going 3-3 with a double and 3 rbi's as the Fury got the win by a score of 9-5.

Friday, May 26
Diamonds whip up on the Fury!
Friday night was not a good night for the Fury as the Lady Diamonds really put a whippin on the girls. The defense was not good on this night for the fury and the offense was bas as well with the girls only getting 10 hits. In an ugly game the diamonds win 17-3.

Tuesday, May 30
Fury split double header with the Dragon Flies.
In the first game of the double header the Fury waited until the 4th inning to score most of their runs putting up 5 to take a 7-6 lead. With only 2 minutes left on the time limit the Dragon Flies got the third out to force a 5th inning. In the top of the 5th the Flies scored 5 runs and then held the Fury scoreless in the bottom half of the inning to get the win.

In the second game it was more of the same as the two teams battled to a 9-9 tie in the 4th inning. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the 5th inning and only 1 out, it looked like the Fury would lose the game but Kaitie Bailey caught a line drive at short stop for an out and then tagged the runner on 2nd for the double play. The Fury scored 1 run in the top of the 6th and then held on for the 10-9 win.

Tuesday, June 6
Fury sweep the Stars in double-header.
In game 1 the Fury offense was slow but their defense was spot on. The offense was led by Natalie Sullenberger with 3 hits and 4 rbi's on the night. The score made this game look closer then it really was as the Fury take game number 1 by a score of 9-3.

Game #2 was a great offensive game for the Fury as the got 20 hits in only 3 innings. Megan Murry led the offense in this game with 3 hits and 5 rbi's as every Fury player picked up a hit in this one. It was not even close and the Fury run ruled the Stars 15-3.

Friday, May 19
Fury beat up on Panthers.
The Fury did not have a let down after their big win on Tuesday night as they took care of buisness and the Panthers tonight. Abby Hicks led the way with 3 hits, 3 rbi's and 2 runs. It was never in doubt and the Fury won 10-2.

Fury finnish 3rd in County tournament.
Game 1 – The tournament started out with the Fury taking on the Powell Lady Dolphins. The Fury played some good defense in the first few innings and was leading the Dolphins 11-5 going into the 5th inning. The Dolphins bats woke up all at once and they scored 6 runs to tie the game up and force extra innings. The Fury did what they needed to do and pushed across 2 runs in the top of the 6th and then held on for the win 13-11.

Game 2 – Another close game for the Fury as they played the Bower Vipers, an experienced team with several older players. The Fury tied this game up at 7 in the 4th inning and had the go ahead run on the way home when a Viper player made a great throw from the outfield to get the 3rd out at home and stop the Fury rally. The Vipers scored 3 in the bottom of the 4th to win the game 10-7 and put the Fury in the loser’s bracket.

Game 3 – This game was not nearly as close as the score made it look as the Fury dominated the game from the beginning and had an insurmountable 9-1 lead going into the top of the 5th inning. The Stars did score 6 in that inning but it did not matter as this game was already over and the Fury move on by a score of 9-7.

Game 4 – The opponent for the Fury was familiar when they suited up against the Willow Creek Lady Diamonds, a team the Fury had already played 3 times this season. This was a great game going back and forth until Lauren White made a great line drive catch at 3rd base to stop a Diamond rally in the 5th inning and keep the game tied at 10. In the bottom half of that inning Payton Kneier scored the game winning run from 2nd base on a Morgan Lyke hit to win the game 10-9.

Game 5 – In the loser bracket final the Fury faced off against the Bower Lady Astros to see who would face Bower Vipers in the Championship game. This was a great game played on the field with a couple of Umpire issues that we will not get into. The Fury scored 6 runs in the bottom half of the 4th inning to get the Astro lead down to 1 run. Then the Fury held the Astros to only 1 run in the top of the 5th and had the 2, 3, 4 hitters starting off the bottom half of the 5th inning. Things looked pretty good as the Fury got runners on 1st and 2nd with only one out but could not push either runner across the plate. The Astros held on for the 12-10 win to eliminate the Fury from the tournament in 3rd place.

Next up for the Fury, the State tournament in Athens. Go FURY!!!

Saturday, July 8
Fury finnish 5th in State tournament.
The Fury headed to Athens for the State tournament on Friday July 7th and in the first game it looked like they left their game back in Knoxville. The Fury started out the State tournament against the team that put them out of the county tournament, the Bower Astros. The girls just did not have it and after 3 innings the score was 17-1 and the ump called the game.

In game number 2 the Fury was set to face off against the Lady Diamonds but the Diamonds were a no show and the Fury won this on by forfeit.

In game number 3 the Fury took on the Bower Vipers and played much better in this one. The game was very close going into the top of the 5th inning when the Fury lost it and allowed the Vipers to put up 7 runs. The effort was much better and the Fury lost this one 18-7.

The fun part of this trip happened at the hotel pool on Friday night where the girls got to swim and the parents got to joke around. We celebrated McKaylas 8th birthday, had cake and partied into the night. It was a fun time for all.
