Texas Trouble: 2005

Top Row (L-R): Rachel, J.T., Keely, Courtney, Shelby, Alexis
Bottom Row (L-R): Leslie, Tabatha, Tiffany, Holly

On the weekend of December 10th and 11th, Texas Trouble played in the Imperial Park Candy Cane Chirstmas Christmas Classic hosted by Third Coast Thunder. After some close and tightly fought games, we came away with the third place trophy. Here's how it happened:

* Pool #1, Sat, 10:30am, vs. Texas Kraze
You'd have thought the cold weather might have a chilling effect on our hitting, but that was not the case. J.T. scattered 3 hits over 5 innings while we exploded for 15 hits in a 14-1 win. It was obviously a total team effort as we had 14 come to the plate in the 2nd inning and pounded out 11 hits to put the game out of reach.

* Pool #2, Sat, 12:00pm, vs. Texas Terror
Alexis fought through some elbow pain for three innings and Keely came on in relief, but the Terror bats were too much as they were able to come away with a 6-2 victory. Tiffany started off our scoring with her third triple in her last four at-bats, while Tabatha drove her in. Then in the 4th, Leslie reached on an error, stole 2nd, advanced to 3rd and home on ground outs. But our 4 hits would not be enough.

* Pool #3, Sat, 3:00pm, vs. Humble Cobras
Keely pitched another gem as she tossed a no-hitter while striking out 5 in 4 innings of work. We scratched across a run in each of the first three innings off of 3 different Cobra pitchers. The 4th pitcher was not so lucky as we added 3 more runs off of her to end with 6-0 victory. Shelby, Courtney, and Leslie contributed with 2-for-2 performances while Courtney, Tabatha, Holly, and Tabatha helped with RBI's (2 by Tabatha).

* Bracket #1, Sat, 6:00pm, vs. Tanel Force
Another great pitching performance, this time from Shelby. She pitched 4 innings while giving up just 1 hit and striking out 10. In fact, the first 8 batters went down via the strikeout, while they managed to get their one hit in the 4th inning. We jumped out early with 2 in the first on a walk to Shelby followed by a single by Holly. J.T. followed with a big double scoring Shelby. J.T. would advance on a ground out and score on a wild pitch. But those 2 runs were plenty for Shelby, as the final was 2-0.

* Bracket #2, Sun, 9:00am, vs. Texas Kraze
Another chilly morning, but, once again, the Trouble bats were hot. After Shelby scratched across our first run with a single, a steal, a ground out, and a wild pitch, the Trouble bats heated up in the second with 6 runs on 5 hits and a couple of Kraze errors. Tabatha, Alexis, and Rachel got credit for RBI's in that inning. Two more in the third finished off our scoring when Tabatha singled and Keely drove her in with a big triple to right center. Alexis knocked her in with a ground out. The Kraze wouldn't give up though, and, down 9-0 in the bottom of the 5th mounted an attack and were able to push across 4 runs before being shut down for a final of 9-4.

* Bracket #3, Sun, 12:20pm, vs. Texas Terror
This was the winner's bracket final and proved to be a barn-burner. Terror started off with a run in the bottom of the first. Trouble responded with 4 in the second. Leslie reached on an error, stole 2nd, and was driven in by Keely's single. Rachel singled Keely to third and took second on the next pitch. Shelby delivered a clutch, 2-run single, followed by singles by Holly and J.T. to load the bases. Courtney hit a sacrifice fly to score Shelby. We were ahead 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth with time out and Terror up to bat. Terror managed to tie the game when the leadoff batter walked, got to 2nd on a wild pitch, stole third and was able to come home on an error. On to ITB. Both teams took advantage of the extra runners to start the inning. We responded first when Courtney sacrificed J.T. to 3rd, then Tiffany came through with yet another triple to score J.T. Leslie hit another sacrifice bunt, but the Terror made a good play to catch Tiffany trying to score. Needing three outs to win the game, we started off by getting a fly ball for the first out. The next batter hit a single to drive in the ITB runner to tie the game again! Even though Terror managed to coax a walk and hit a double, we were able to end the inning on a caught stealing and a strikeout. Now it is was Progressive ITB (runners on 2nd and 3rd). We thought we got enough when we plated both ITB runners on a passed ball and a big triple from Keely. But the Terror refused to quit and got both runs back on a single in the bottom of the sixth followed by a big double to score the winning run. Final score had Trouble losing 8-7.

* Bracket #4, Sat, 3:40pm, vs. Lady Titans
This one started a little rough with the Lady Titans scoring 2 in the first on three singles. They added 1 more each in the 2nd and 3rd innings to push out to a 4-0 lead. We would not go down without fighting, though. The bottom of the third started off with a single from Shelby. Holly moved Shelby to 2nd on her single. J.T. singled to load the bases and Courtney came thru with another sacrifice fly to plate our first run. Tiffany followed with a screaming double to left center to bring home Holly and J.T. Unfortunately we went down without scoring in the fourth and fifth innings, but J.T. made it exciting with a double in the fifth, but was left stranded. Final score had the Lady Titans winning 4-3, sending Trouble home with 3rd place.

On November 19th, Texas Trouble played in their fist 16U tournament and came away with a strong 4th place finish out of 9 teams. We went 2-0 in our pool games and 2-2 in brackets games with our only losses by one run including an incredible 13-inning, 8 ITB marathon. Here are the game recaps:

* Pool #1, Sat, 8:00am, vs. Cy-Fair Shock
Alexis started off for us and pitched a 4-hit shutout while our bats continued to be strong from the last tournament. We scored 2, 1, and 2 runs in each of our three innings and won the game 5-0.

* Pool #2, Sat. 9:15am, vs. Magic 9
It was J.T.'s turn on the mound and she delivered a one-hitter and we jumped out with 3 runs in the first and 9 in the second. While the offense was highlighted by a 2-run single in the first by Tiffany and a 2-run single by Holly in the second and other RBI's on a double from Tiffany and a single from Keely, it was a total team effort as we put together 12 hits for a 12-2 final score.

* Bracket #1, Sat. 1:30pm, vs. Houston Havoc
A couple of hits and a couple of errors got us off to a rocky start with 3 unearned runs for Havoc in the first. We had scored in the top half on a walk to Shelby, a double by Holly and Courtney driving in a run on a ground out. We added 4 more in the third beginning with walks to Alexis and Shelby. Holly reached on catcher's interference and J.T. hit a big 2-RBI double. Wild pitches plated the third and fourth runs of the inning. Things turned for the worst when the starting Havoc pitcher launched one over the fence in left for a three-run homer and a 6-5 lead. They managed to bat for the rest of the time left on the clock and it was on to the loser's bracket.

* Bracket #2, Sat. 3:00pm, vs. Houston RBI
Keely was on the mound for this one and pitched a commanding game while we pushed runs across in the first, second, and third innings for a 3-0 lead. They got a couple of big hits in the fourth to make it 3-2, but we responded with a big 5-run inning while running out the clock. Tabatha led off with a double, Rachel singled her to third, and Alexis reached on a fielder's choice that scored Tabatha and moved Rachel to third. Shelby hit a 2-RBI double, Holly drove her in with a single, and J.T. grounded out to first, scoring Holly. Final score 8-2.

* Bracket #3, Sat, 4:30pm, vs. Avengers
Little did we know what we getting ourselves into in this game. It started out innocently enough with a scoreless pitcher's duel thru 4 innings. They managed to score two off of Shelby with a clutch, 2-run single. We came up in the bottom of the fifth knowing this was our last chance as time had run out. With our backs against the wall, Keely led off with a single to center and Shelby doubled her to third. Following with a couple of strikeouts, we were down to our last out when Courtney ripped a single to left to tie the game. It was on to ITB - and what an ITB is was! The ITB rules at this tournament had you start with runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 out and a 3-2 count on each batter! So it was pretty much a one-pitch inning from here on out until somebody won. Shelby's first pitch to lead off the sixth as a ball, and, therefore, a walk to load the bases. The next pitch was a called strike for strike three to end the inning!. Our half had a ground ball to short from Leslie that got her at first to keep the game going into the 7th ... and 8th ... and 9th ... and 10th .. and 11th ... and 12th. Most of the innings were one-pitch strikeouts with some ground outs mixed in. At that point, with curfews becoming an issue for subsequent games, the ITB rules were modified in hopes of ending the game sooner. Runners would still start on 2nd and 3rd, but the inning would start with one out and a 1-1 count on each batter. The top of the 13th started with the count going full on the first batter, then she hit a sacrifice fly to left to give the Avengers the lead 3-2. Shelby struck out the next batter to end the inning. Our half began with a popout to first for the second out. Leslie then coaxed a walk to load the bases. Tabatha then came up and delivered a single down the right field line. J.T. scored easily and Lori (who had gone in as a pinch-runner for Courtney earlier in the game), raced around from 2nd to score the winning run just ahead of the tag to end the game!!! Trouble wins in 13, 4-3.

* Bracket #4, Sat, 6:00pm, vs. Conroe Crossfire
With no time to rest after such a draining game, we started the next game with an unearned run given up to Crossfire in the first. Alexis pitched a strong game, allowing only 4 hits and just the one unearned run. After the first, she threw just 7, 8, and 7 pitches in the next three innings to shut them down. Unfortunately, we only managed two hits ourselves scattered across 5 innings and were unable to score, ending the game at 1-0.

On November 12th and 13th, Texas Trouble travelled to Deer Park to play in the 3N2 Fall Bash hosted by the 3N2 Dominators. This weekend everything came together as we won all six round robin games as well as winning the championship game. Here are the game recaps:

* Round Robin #1, Sat, 9:20am, vs. MC Elite
We started off the tournament with a bang. Not only did our bats come alive right from the start (and stay hot throughout the tournament), but Shelby decided she wasn't going to allow them anything at all. She faced 9 batters and struck them all out for a perfect game! Meanwhile, we scored 8 in the first and 4 in the second for a 12-0 finish.

* Round Robin #2, Sat. 4:00pm, vs. Lady Titans
This turned out to be the closest of the round robin games. They jumped out to 2-0 lead, but we answered with 4 runs in the bottom of the first highlighted by a bases-clearing double by Courtney. Keely pitched a strong game and didn't allow them any more runs so we ended up winning 4-2.

* Round Robin #3, Sat. 5:20pm, vs. Lone Star Pride
This time it was Alexis' turn to hold down our opponent. She pitched 4 shutout innings and the bats contributed with 2 in the 2nd and 4 in the 3rd for a 6-0 victory. The big 4-run, 6-hit 3rd inning salted the game away for us.

* Round Robin #4, Sat. 8:00pm, vs. Baytown Knockouts
Next up on the mound was J.T. Not to be outdone by the other pitchers, she pitched a 2-hit shutout while our hitting stayed hot and helped her out by scoring big in every inning. 8 in the 1st, 2 in the 2nd, and 5 in the 3rd was enough to give us a run-rule victory, 15-0 and finish off an impressive first day. Big hits in this game were a 2-run single by Leslie and a 2-run triple to the fence by Tabatha.

* Round Robin #5, Sun. 2:40pm, vs. Deer Park Dynamics
Shelby was up again and appeared nearly human as she allowed a run in the first inning, but shut them down for the rest of the game. Once again, strong bat support started with 6 in the 1st, 3 in the 2nd, and 1 in the 3rd for a 10-1 win. The 1st inning had run-scoring doubles by Leslie and Tiffany. Tiffany's double was a one-hopper over the fence -- you're getting pretty close, Tiff!!

* Round Robin #6, Sun. 4:00pm, vs. Woodlands Knockouts
Supported by 10 runs in the first 3 innings, Keely coasted to an easy victory 10-4 victory. She was helped by a run-scoring triple from J.T. and RBI doubles from Courtney and Tabatha.

* Championship Game, Sun, 5:20pm, vs. Tigers/Mystixx
Now it was time for the two 6-0 teams to face each other in a winner-take-all championship game. Both teams had dominated throughout their round robin games, so you knew it would be a good matchup and the two teams didn't disappoint. It turned out to be a "battle of the Shelby's" as each pitcher contained the other batters. The only runner from either team in the first two innings was Shelby reaching on a dropped third strike. But, despite a steal and an advancement to 3rd on a groundout, we couldn't get her home. While our Shelby continued to dominate striking out most of their batters, we finally got untracked in the bottom of the 3rd when Keely walked to start the rally and moved to 2nd on a ground out from Alexis. Lori got hit by a pitch and Shelby stepped up and drove in Keely with a single, moving Lori to 3rd while Shelby took 2nd on the play. Holly delivered the clutch two-run single (despite having just being hit on the hand on her last swing and sporting quite a black-and-blue finger). This gave Shelby all the cushion she needed as she scattered two hits while the last 9 outs were all strikeouts (13 strikeouts in all). Final score, 3-0.

On October 8th and 9th, Texas Trouble travelled to League City to play in the Big League Dreams Sports Park. This facility lived up to all of it hype with six 3/4-size major league baseball classic stadiums with state-of-the-art artificial turf, stadium seating, and air-conditioned restaurants with TV's going overlooking all of the softball action on the fields just outside the windows. Although we were looking for a higher finish, we played hard and we played well and managed a 7th place out of a strong field of 17 teams. Here are the game recaps:

* Pool #1, Sat, 9:10am, vs. Mystixx
Our first game was at Fenway Park. A low-scoring game, with J.T. pitching four strong innings and only allowing two runs. We got two runs in the first off of a couple of walks, some stolen bases and wild pitches and an RBI ground out from Tiffany. That was all the scoring we would muster and it ended in a tie. Trouble 2, Mystixx 2.

* Pool #2, Sat. 11:30am, vs. Texas Velocity
It was on to the old St. Louis stadium, Sportsman Park. We jumped out early with a 3-run first inning on a single from Tabatha, a steal of 2nd, a walk to J.T., and RBI double from Tiffany and an RBI single from Courtney. We added 3 more in the third on a walk to Tabatha, a steal, J.T. reached on an error, scoring Tabatha. Tiffany's groundout moved J.T. to 3rd, when Courtney delivered another RBI single. After a wild pitch and ground out from Rachel moved Courtney to 3rd, Leslie hit an RBI single to drive our 6th and final run. Keely pitched a dominating game, going 3 innings and giving up just one hit and striking out 6 for the win. Trouble 6, Texas Velocity 0.

* Bracket #1, Sat. 3:00pm, vs. Lady Titans
Our first bracket game was at Yankee Stadium where we faced the Lady Titans. Once again, we scored 3 runs in the first. Shelby drove a triple to deep right center. Tabatha singled in Shelby. J.T. then stepped up and drove one deep into right center that rolled all the way to the wall for an inside-the-park home run. Again we added three more later in the game, although we had to work hard for it. Courtney led off with a single, advanced to 2nd on a single from Rachel. Leslie singled to load the bases. Keely reached on a fielder's choice, forcing Courtney at home. Callie reached on a fielder's choice, forcing Rachel at home. Shelby finally broke thru with a single, driving in two runs. Tabatha followed with an RBI single to finish off the scoring. It was Shelby's turn to dominate on the mound as she pitched 5 innings, giving up 4 hits, striking out 8 to get the win. Trouble 6, Lady Titans 0.

* Bracket #2, Sat. 7:00pm, vs. Texas Showdown Blue
Back to Sportsman Park where a wild first inning ended with Trouble ahead 5-2. Most of the scoring was due to walks, errors, fielder's choices as all 7 runs were scored on just 4 hits. Things settled down to a scoreless 2nd inning. In the 3rd, the Showdown bats came alive and they got 5 runs on 4 hits to take a 7-5 lead. Our bats couldn't respond, so that's how it ended with Trouble going to the loser's bracket. It was onto Sunday morning with 6 back-to-back games to get to the championship game.

* Bracket #3, Sun. 8:00am, vs. Mystixx
Our next bracket game brought us back to Fenway Park against the Mystixx again. This time it wouldn't be as close as the pool game. We scored 4 in the first with a triple from Shelby, a double from Tabatha, singles from J.T., Tiffany, and Courtney, and an RBI ground out from Leslie. One more in the 2nd and another in the 4th finished off the scoring. Shelby and Alexis combined on a one-hitter and struck out a combined six batters. Trouble 6, Mystixx 0.

* Bracket #4, Sun. 9:20am, vs. South Texas Sting
Now it was on to Ebbets Field where we faced the host team, South Texas Sting. Despite a score of 4-3, both teams' bats were hot as the balls were flying all over the field. It was a back-and-forth game with Sting taking leads of 1-0 and 4-3 with Trouble having leads of 2-1 and 3-2. Holly opened up our scoring with a double that plated Rachel and Leslie who had reached on singles. We took a brief 3-2 lead in the 3rd on a long triple to center from J.T. with Tiffany driving her in with a single. The Sting followed in the bottom of the third with a shot over the left fielder's head that rolled to the fence for a two-run homer bringing the score to 4-3 in favor of the Sting. After a scoreless 4th, we had one last chance in the top of the 5th as time was out. Shelby and Tabatha hit a couple of shots to center field where they were run down and caught. J.T. then tripled again. Tiffany then hit a shot to shortstop that appeared to have Tiffany safe at first with J.T. tieing the game, but the ruling was that Tiffany was out at first, ending the game. South Texas Sting 4, Trouble 3.

South Texas Sting continued on with their 6 back-to-back games to win the tournament, beating Texas Showdown Blue who had put us into the loser's bracket.

Trouble played another solid tournament. Even though we didn't take home the top hardware, the girls played tough in every game. Here's how the tournament went:

* Pool #1, Sat, 9:00am, vs. Sugar Land Fillies
Playing against one of our sister Sugar Land teams, we started off with a 1-0 lead after one inning, but the Fillies put 3 across the plate in the 2nd aided by some errors. We pushed one more across in the bottom of the 2nd, but that was all of the scoring. Alexis pitched another strong game giving up only two hits and allowing no earned runs. Final score - Fillies 3, Trouble 2.

* Pool #2, Sat. 10:15am, vs. Texas Kraze
Trouble started off slow in this game. The Kraze kept the score with two double plays in the first two innings, keeping Trouble down to a 2-0 lead. But the offense got on track and we scored three more in the third and fourth innings. Keely and J.T. combined on a one-hitter. Final Score - Trouble 8, Kraze 0.

* Bracket #1, Sat. 3:30pm, vs. Magic 9
Keely was dominant in this game, going 5 innings, striking out 5 and allowing just two hits and no runs. We had two three-run innings highlighted by a 3-for-3 performance at the plate by Shelby. Final score - Trouble 6, Magic 9 0.

* Bracket #2, Sat. 8:00pm, vs. Texas Slam
The Slam jumped out to a early lead thanks to a over-the-fence 2-run home run by Dana giving Slam all the runs they needed as it turned out. We managed one run in the second with a double from Tabatha and a single from Rachel. That was all the offense we could put together, so it was on to the loser's bracket. Final score - Slam 2, Trouble 1.

* Bracket #3, Sun. 10:30am, vs Sugar Land Fillies
Winning this game would have put us in the championship game, but it was not meant to be. The Fillies bats were hot as a pistol as they put together two 3-run innings in the 2nd and the 3rd. We went through three pitchers, but it didn't seem to matter as their hits just kept coming. We pushed across one run in the 5th on a single by Rachel, moving to 2nd on a ground out by Tabatha, then scoring on a single by Holly. Final score - Fillies 6, Trouble 1.

Game recaps:
Pool 1: Sugar Land Fillies 3, Texas Trouble 2

Although the tournament ended on an unfortunate note as sprinklers flooded the fields, thus cancelling the tournament prematurely, Texas Trouble went undefeated thru the two pool games and two bracket games, thereby earning a first place finish:

* Pool #1, Sat, 9:15am, vs. Pink Ladies
The Trouble bats started off hot as we got a 10-run 1st inning and great pitching from J.T. that ended in a 11-1 win.

* Pool #2, Sat. 10:30am, vs. Magic 9
We got off to a 2-0 lead after two innings, but a couple of untimely errors allowed 3 unearned runs in the 3rd inning. With time running out, we quickly scratched together the tying run, with a bunt single from Tabatha, a steal of second, moving to third on a groundout, and scoring on a throwing error to tie the game, 3-3. Alexis pitched a great game in her first appearance for the team, allowing no earned runs.

* Bracket #1, Sat. 6:30pm, vs. Huntsville Buzz
While Shelby pitched a dominant game, going 5 innings and allowing only one hit and striking out 10, our offense got started with 2 runs in the first on consecutive singles from Holly, J.T. and Tiffany bringing in one run, and a run-scoring fielder's choice from Courtney. We added another run in the 4th on a single by Leslie, a steal of 2nd, then a run-scoring single from Alexis. Final score, 3-0.

* Bracket #2, Sat. 8:00pm, vs. Texas Wildfire
Keely started this game and it was 0-0 going into the third, when they put together a few hits to take a 3-0 lead. Trouble mounted a comeback with a 3-run, 2-out rally in the bottom of the 3rd with 4 consecutive hits from Shelby (double), Holly (single), J.T. (triple), and Tiffany (single). Shelby came on in relief and set them down 1-2-3 in 4th, forcing ITB. In the top of the 5th, it was 1-2-3 again as Shelby kept them under control. In the bottom half of the 5th, a throwing error allowed the winning run to cross the plate, leaving a final score of 4-3.

The girls were really primed for victory on Sunday, being in the winner's bracket final and prepared for the championship game that followed, only to find out that the tournament got cancelled out due to flooded fields from the sprinkler system. However, they played a great tournament, despite its shortness and are looking forward to next weekend where they plan to continue their winning ways.

We got great pitching performances from all four pitchers in their first outings of the fall season, a combined team ERA of 1.75 for the tournament. They also recorded 23 strikeouts in the 16 innings of play.

Game recaps:
Pool 1: Texas Trouble 11, Pink Ladies 1
Pool 2: Texas Trouble 3, Magic 9 3
Bracket 1: Texas Trouble 3, Huntsville Buzz 0
Bracket 2: Texas Trouble 4, Texas Wildfire 3 (ITB)

* Pool #1, Sat, 9:05am, vs. Texas Raiders
Trouble jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first 2-0. Shelby singled, Holly sacrificed her to 2nd. J.T. doubled to right center to score Shelby. Ally singled to right to score J.T. We got another run in the bottom of the 5th when Tiffany singled, Courtney doubled and Tabatha drove in Tiffany on a groundout. Keely had them shut down for 4 innings, but their bats came alive in the top of the 5th to score two runs before time ran out - final - we win 3-2.

* Pool #2, Sat. 1:25pm, vs. Texas Terror
We battled them to a 1-1 tie. J.T. pitched and only allowed two hits. Their run came on a hit batter, a wild pitch, a ground out and an error. Our run was a walk to Lori, a steal of 2nd, an error, and a successful suicide squeeze by Shelby.

We then started a round robin format where the 5 teams played each of the other teams one time (4 games), with the 1st and 2nd place round robin finishers playing a championship game.

* Round Robin #1, Sat, 3:00pm, vs. Texas Slam
A real frustrating game as Shelby pitches a no-hitter and we lost 1-0!!! Their run scored on an error followed by two errors on the next batter. We managed 4 hits, but not bunched together. A great pitching performance by Slam's Cally Falls as we couldn't get anything going against her.

* Round Robin #2, Sat. 6:00pm, vs. Texas Trouble (Victoria)
Another frustrating game as we lose a close one 4-3. They got 2 in the 1st on an error, a passed ball, a sacrifice bunt, and a single. We get 2 in the bottom of the 2nd on a Tiffany single, Courtney reaching on an error, an RBI single by Tabatha and then an error to score Courtney. They added 2 in the 4th on a single, a steal, a ground out, a fielder's choice, and an RBI ground out. We managed 1 in the bottom of the 4th on a walk to Lori, a single by Tabatha, a fielder's choice by Shelby, and a wild pitch, but that was all. Final - we lose 4-3.

* Round Robin #3, Sun. 8:00am, vs Texas Raiders
We came back Sunday morning with our work cut out for us. Down 0-2 and tied for last in round robin play, we did what we had to do -- win. With Keely and J.T. pitching, we get a 6-3 win over Texas Raiders - 3 in the 1st, 3 in the 4th on a 7-hit attack. Keely held them thru the 3rd when they starting hitting. We brought in J.T. and she finished off the game without allowing a run.

* Round Robin #4, Sun 11:00am, vs. Texas Terror
We knew we had to beat the 2-0 Texas Terror and hope for some other games to go our way to be able to get to the championship game. Shelby pitched and dominated them for a 3-0 win (another no-hitter!!). Shelby helped herself out with a double to lead off the bottom of the 1st. A wild pitch and an RBI groundout by Tabatha got her in. Then in the 3rd, Shelby led off again with a single and after singles by Tabatha, Ally, and Tiffany and walks to J.T. and Courtney, we managed two more runs. But they couldn't figure out Shelby and that's the way it ended.

Now it was waiting time to see if we would be in the championship game or just go home. The way the tie-breakers fell, we had to wait for the outcome of Texas Trouble (Victoria), 3-0 against Texas Terror 2-1. If Texas Trouble (Victoria) won, we would end up in a 3-way tie for 2nd (2-2 record) with Texas Slam, us, and Texas Terror. We would win that tie-breaker based on fewest runs allowed. If Texas Terror won, we would go home in 4th place. We even had to start warming up for the championship game before we knew if we would be playing or not as the championship game immediately followed the Texas Trouble (Victoria) vs. Texas Terror game. Fortunately, Texas Trouble (Victoria) pulled out a 2-0 victory, sending home Texas Terror with a 3rd place finish. Now it was us vs. Texas Trouble (Victoria) in one championship game to determine 1st and 2nd.

* Championship Game, Sun. 3:30pm, vs. Texas Trouble (Victoria)
We started Shelby again and she had another dominating performance up until the end. We got one in the top of the 1st on a single by J.T. and a double by Ally over the right-fielder's head. We got one in the 3rd on a Shelby single, a ground out, a wild pitch and Shelby scoring on a ball that squirted away from the catcher just enough to get her in. Two more in the top of the 4th on a single by Courtney, a walk to Holly, and a double by Lori over the left fielder's head. The inning ended on a weird play that saw Keely hit a ground ball to short, the shortstop throwing home to get Holly out trying to score, the catcher throwing to 3rd to get Lori and the ball getting by allowing Lori to score. The throw went to home trying to get Lori, then the catcher threw to 3rd getting Keely out. So, a double play with a run scored!. We just had to hold them to win. Of course, to make things interesting, they started off with a single, a passed ball, two more singles, an error, and a walk to make it 4-3. Shelby coaxed a ground ball to third where Keely stepped on third to end the game and take the championship!!

Most of the team was scuffed up with strawberries from sliding or diving for balls and they all went home with uniforms covered in dirt - but they felt no pain!

It's 2nd at Lake Jackson USSSA Qualifier

Our first game was against the Sugar Land Fillies. Shelby started and they got two runs in the top of the first on a couple of errors. After that, Shelby retired the rest in order, except for a leadoff double in the 4th. We exploded with 5 runs in the 2nd, when Tiffany (with her new Rocket Tech bat) hit a one-bounce shot to the fence in right-center for a triple. Keely laid down a suicide squeeze that scored Tiffany and allowed Keely to get to second. Courtney singled up the middle to score Keely. Derryn singled thru hole between short and 3rd. Shelby then hit a shot over the left fielder's head for a triple to drive in Courtney and Derryn. Lori singled to drive in Shelby. So at 5-2 in the fourth, they got their leadoff double (one of only two hits given up by Shelby), then she scored on two wild pitches, but Shelby put down the next three batters to end the game. Final 5-3.

Our second round robin game was against Texas Slam. Keely pitched and held them in check the whole game allowing just four hits. We got a run in the first when Lori reached on an error, stole 2nd, went to 3rd on a groundout and scored on an error. It was 1-0 going into the top of the fourth. They managed to tie the game on a single, a wild pitch, then another single. Tied 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth, the bats came alive again. Lori doubled down the right field line and went to third on a wild pitch. Ally singled to score Lori and went to 2nd on an error, to 3rd on a wild pitch, then scored on a single by J.T. J.T. stole second and went to third on a single by Tiffany. Keely then singled and drove in both J.T. and Tiffany, but was out trying to go to second. Time then ran out with Courtney at bat. Final 4-1.

Our last round robin game was against the Wharton Sparks. We were both 2-0 going into the game, so the winner of this game would play the 1st place team from the other pool to determine 1st/2nd places. The loser would play the 2nd place team from the other pool to determine 3rd/4th places. We got a run in the top of the 1st on a single by Lori, a steal of 2nd, then Ally hit a monster fly ball over the right fielder's head (not far from being out) for a triple to score Lori. They came back with 2 runs in the bottom of the first on a couple off walks, a wild pitch, a single and an error. We got 2 in the top of the 2nd when Tiffany hit a shot down the right field line that went into the right field corner in foul territory. The right fielder had to go so far to get it, that Tiffany circled the bases for a home run. It was then Keely's turn for a big shot as she hit a one-or-two-hopper to the fence in right-center for a triple. She scored when Courtney laid down a suicide squeeze. They answered with a run in the bottom of the 2nd. They started with a leadoff double and got a couple of walks, but we got out of the inning with just one run - now tied 3-3. In the top of the 3rd, Shelby led off with a single and Lori laid down a sacrifice bunt to move her to 2nd. With an error on the play, Shelby ended up scoring. Despite getting hits from J.T. and Rachel later in the inning, we ended up just getting the one run. We were up 4-3 going into the bottom of the 3rd. Shelby struck out the first batter , walked the second batter, and struck out the 3rd batter. Courtney threw out their running stealing to end the inning. We got a hit in the top of the 4th, but that was it. In the bottom half, Shelby got a leadoff groundout and a strikeout. Then they put a runner at first on an error, but Shelby struck out the last batter to end it. Final 4-3.

That put is in the championship game against the Texas Lady Cats. This was the same team we played in the last tournament at Softball USA for the championship where we won 2-0 in ITB (remember that score!). This game started off just like the other one. A pitcher's duel the whole way (Madisyn for them again, this time Keely for us). It was 0-0 for 5 innings. The game went really fast as both pitchers didn't have to throw many pitches. In the top of the 6th (with still some time left in the 1:10 game), they led off with a single, followed by a sacrifice bunt. Then they got another single to drive in a run. After a groundout, they got a double to left to drive in a second run before getting the third out. Now it was our turn to come back from down 2-0 in a championship game. The bottom half had us start with a ground out. Courtney walked but was erased at second on a fielder's choice by Tabatha. Tabatha stole second, but that was all we could put together. Final 2-0.

Trouble Takes 1st Place at Softball USA

The rain and the cold made it difficult, but between the perseverance of the Texas Catz, who hosted the "For The Love Of The Game Tournament," the perseverance of our players, the weekend was a total success!! The Catz utilized Softball USA's tarps to keep the fields in playable condition. I am guessing this was the only tournament that played to completion in all of Houston. We managed to get our first pool game in on Saturday morning. We had rain all day and all night Saturday that washed out our second pool game. But, on Sunday, we were able to get in a complete double-elimination bracket, that started out sloppy (in more ways than one!!) and ended up with some beautiful weather that dried out a lot of the fields. Thanks to the Texas Catz for loaning us a couple of players that enabled us to have enough to play during the day. Also thanks to Kristen and Bianca for playing with us as well. Even Alexis Estrada who was on her way to help us when the rains washed Saturday out.

Our pool game on Saturday morning was against the Cy-Fair Shock. We lost that one 4-1. We couldn't get our bats going and we gave them a few runs. The rain and the cold were factors, but that game wasn't meant to be.

On Sunday, the bracket started and our opening round game was against the Cy-Fair Shock again. This game was played much better. After 2 1/2 innings it was scoreless, both pitchers dominating the game. Shelby threw a no-hitter, and worked out of a couple of jams after having a few runners get on base by walk and an error. But, she hung in there and pitched three scoreless innings. That left the door open for our batters in the bottom of the third. With the time nearly out, Kara (a Catz pickup) got on with a line drive single to right-center. Shelby came up and drove her in with a single, then stole second. Kristen walked and J.T. came up to bat. J.T. was able to use up the rest of the time up with her at-bat, finally singling down the first base line to end the game. Final score 1-0.

Bracket game 2 was against Texas No Doubt. We jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second thanks to a double from Rachel, a triple from Kara and RBI groundout by Kristen. Unfortunately, we had our bad inning of the day next where we gave them 4 runs on a combination of a walk, a couple of errors and a well-timed double with the bases loaded (the only hit of the game given up by J.T.). We managed a run on the bottom of the third in a comeback effort. Shelby reached on an error and Amber (another Catz pickup), sacrificed her over with a bunt, and Shelby ended up scoring on the play on an error. But, that was all we could put together and we lost 4-3.

Now in the loser's bracket, we met up with the Cy-Fair Shock again. At this point, the girls were apparently awake as, from this point forward, they looked like the team we all know they are. Shelby pitched a four-hit shutout, walking none and striking out 6. The defense was superb, highlighted by a shot up the middle that Shelby stabbed at, deflecting the ball to short where Rachel picked it up and fired to first for the out. In the top of the first, Kristen got on with a single and Kara came up and prompty hit one off of a palm tree in right center field for her first bracket-game over-the-fence home run (second of her career). We added four more in the fourth when Rachel walked, Tiffany doubled, Lori drove in Rachel on a ground out. Naomi (another Catz pickup) got on an error allowing Tiffany to score. Walks to Shelby and Kristen loaded the bases and Kara drove in two more with a single. Final score 6-0.

In the loser's bracket final, we came up against No Doubt again. The girls were able to avenge their only bracket loss by jumping on them in the first inning with 12 runs. Everyone contributed to this offensive output. J.T. was not be denied either as she pitched a perfect game. 9 batters up, 9 batters down - two ground outs to second and 7 strikeouts. Final score 12-0.

This brought us to the championship game against the Texas Lady Cats. The Lady Cats are a 12U team playing up in 14U this week, but they don't play like a 12U team. It was a hard fought game that was scoreless thru 4 innings when time ran out. Neither team made an error and the pitching was outstanding on both sides. The defense was highlighted by a hustling catch of a pop fly behind third base by Rachel (from shortstop!) and a runner thrown out by Courtney and Rachel trying to steal. Lori and Tabatha also contributed defensively with some crucial catches of fly balls. In the first ITB (which started with runners on 2nd and 3rd), Lori led off with a suicide squeeze that she got down perfectly, scoring Rachel from 3rd. Lori was also able to beat the throw to first and take second when Bianca went to 3rd. After Bianca was doubled off third, Lori stole third, and scored when the throw went into left field. So we had to hold a two run lead to win the championship. Shelby struck out the first batter. Their next batter laid down a bunt to J.T. at first. J.T. faked the throw to first and fired the ball to third where Rachel tagged out the runner caught off base. Shelby then struck out the last batter to end the game. Final score 2-0. Another pitching gem by Shelby - 5 innings of shutout ball, 3 hits, 1 walk, 7 strikeouts.

In looking back over the bracket games, we outscored the opposition 24-4 (all four runs coming in the 3rd inning of the second bracket game) - 4 out of 5 games were shutouts. Pitching stats over bracket games:

J.T. (2 games) - 6 IP, 1 hit, 13 Ks, 5 BB, 0 earned runs, W-L 1-1
Shelby (3 games) - 12 IP, 7 hits, 18 Ks, 5 BB, 0 earned runs, W-L 3-0
