Texas Trouble: 2006

TROUBLE FINISHES 3-3 AT SOUTHBELT CHALLENGE

What was supposed to be a cold an wet weekend turned out to be a fairly nice weekend for playing.

* Round Robin #1, Sat, 1/13, 10:25am, vs. Texas Impact
After a layoff of over a month, the rust was apparent this weekend. We started off spotting the always tough Impact 3 runs in the first thanks to a walk, an error, and a couple of hits. We couldn't get on track with our bats either as we were held scoreless. They tacked on 2 more in the 3rd with a 2-run bomb. Keely pitched well against their big hitters allowing just 2 earned runs. Final score, 5-0.

* Round Robin #2, Sat, 1/13, 1:15pm, vs. Lethal Weapon
It was our turn to jump on top with 3 runs in the 1st. Shelby and Tabatha led off with singles, followed by Tiffany's shot down the right-field line that went all the way to the fence for a 3-run homer. We got another in the 2nd when Leslie doubled and was driven in by a single from Alexis. Their bats came alive in the bottom of the 2nd with 4 hits that plated 3 runs. We added 2 more in the 3rd when Keely singled, stole 2nd, and was driven in by Rachel's single. Leslie followed with a triple to drive in Rachel. They managed 2 more in the bottom of the 3rd as time ran out, but it wasn't quite enough. Shelby scattered 7 hits for the win. Final score, 6-5.

* Round Robin #3, Sat, 1/13, 2:40pm, vs. Phaze 2
This was a battle to the end. They started off in the first with a run on 2 hits. We responded with a run in the bottom of the 2nd when Holly walked, was moved all the way to 3rd on a Rachel groundout and scored on a Leslie groundout. That was all of the scoring until the 5th. With time running out, they put together 4 straight hits to score 3. Final score, 4-1. Other than the last inning, Alexis pitched a tight game with a 4-hit shutout thru 4 innings.

* Round Robin #4, Sat, 1/13, 5:30pm, vs. Houston RBI
This started off close as we didn't score in the first 2 innings, while RBI got 1 in the 1st from a walk and a double. But things turned our way in the 4th. Alexis reached on an error. Cayla reached on a fielder's choice, with Alexis safe at 2nd. Shelby singled to drive in Alexis and move Cayla to 3rd. Tabatha reached on a fielder's choice, and on the play, both Cayla and Shelby scored. In the 4th, Holly walked and moved to 2nd on a wild pitch. Rachel walked, then Leslie reached on a fielder's choice with everyone safe, bases loaded. Alexis singled and Cayla walked to drive in 2 runs. Keely was strong, pitching a 1-hitter and striking out 4 for the win. Final score, 5-1.

* Round Robin #5, Sun, 1/14, 9:00am, vs. Texas Storm (Jones)
This was a back-and-forth with Storm starting it off with 3 in the first, courtesy of 3 walks and 2 hits. We answered with 2 when Tabatha and Tiffany started it off with walks. Courtney doubled driving in Tabatha and Keely drove in Tiffany with a ground out. Storm tacked on 1 in the 2nd on a couple of hits and an error. We were down 4-2 in the bottom of the 3rd with time running out. But we finished strong as Shelby led off by reaching on an error. Tabatha walked to move Shelby to 2nd. Courtney grounded out, moving up the runners. Keely and Holly each followed with run-scoring singles to tie the game. With time expired and Rachel announced as the last batter, she calmly stroked a single up the middle to score both Keely and Holly for a 6-4 victory. Alexis came on and pitched 3 strong innings of shutout ball to get the win.

* Round Robin #6, Sun, 1/14, 1:15pm, vs. Texas Hawks (Dutton)
This was another see-saw affair, this time with us on the wrong end. We started off with a run in the 1st. Shelby led off with a double over the center fielder's head. Tabatha sacrificed her to 3rd and Tiffany reached on a fieler's choice with Shelby crossing the plate safely. They answered with 3 runs in the bottom half on a hit batter and three strong hits. After they added another run in the 2nd, we got 2 in the top of the 3rd. Alexis singled and Cayla walked, then Shelby ripped another double scoring both runs. Another 2 scored in the 4th when Courtney and Keely walked and moved to 2nd and 3rd on a Holly ground out. Rachel drove in 2 runs with a single. We were up 5-4 in the bottom of the 4th when they got a 2-run homer to move ahead. We started with runners on 1st and 2nd in the 5th when Alexis singled and Cayla walked, but time expired. Final score, 6-5.

TROUBLE FINISHES 2ND AT "WHO LET THE DAWGS OUT"

Front Row (L-R): Cayla, Alexis, Tabatha, Tiffany, Holly
Back Row: Coach Jerry, Ally, Leslie, Courtney, Coach John, Keely, Rachel, Shelby

A cold and brisk weekend could not stop Trouble from finishing 2nd at the Austin Bulldog's "Who Let The Dawgs Out" tournament on the weekend of Dec 2-3.

* Pool #1, Sat, 12/2, 10:10am, vs. Texas Magic
Magic took a 1-0 lead after 1 and we didn't respond until the bottom of the 3rd. Tabatha singled and, after a wild pitch moved her to 2nd, Ally doubled her in to tie the score. Time ran out before we could do anything else. Shelby and Keely combined on a 2-hitter. Final score, 1-1.

* Pool #2, Sat, 12/2, 12:30pm, vs. Cy-Fair Battz
The bats were hotter in this game. After the Battz pushed 1 across in the top of the 1st, we responded with 3 runs in the bottom half. Shelby, Tabatha, and Ally led off with singles, with Ally's single driving in Shelby. 2 ground outs from Tiffany and Keely plated Tabatha and Ally for a 3-1 lead. We tacked on 1 more in the 3rd when Tabatha doubled, Tiffany moved her to 3rd with a ground out and Keely singled her in. Again Shelby and Keely combined to hold them to 1 run on a 1-hitter with Shelby getting the win and Keely the save. Final score, 4-1.

* Bracket #1, Sat, 12/2, 4:30pm, vs. Cy-Fair Battz
We saw the Battz again in the first bracket game and there was no scoring for the first 2 innings. However, everything broke loose in the bottom of the 3rd when we pushed across 7 runs. 7 singles from Leslie (2), Tabatha, Ally, Tiffany, Courtney and Holly mixed in with 2 doubles from Shelby and a sacrifice fly from Keely did the damage. They responded with 2 runs in the 4th, but we piled on 3 more in the bottom half. Tiffany walked and stole 2nd. Courtney followed with a walk and Holly hit a 2-run double. Keely and Rachel followed with singles to end the scoring. Keely went the distance scattering 6 hits and striking out 9 for the win. Final score, 10-2.

* Bracket #2, Sun, 12/3, 10:25am, vs. Texas Select
The cold weather couldn't silence our bats as we came back on Sunday morning and picked up where we left off. We scored 3 or more runs in all 3 innings while pounding out 12 hits. Everyone reached base at least once. It took until the 3rd inning before they could touch Alexis when they put together a couple of hits and, with the aid of 3 errors bounced back with 4 runs. Alexis threw a 3-hitter, allowing no earned runs for the win. Final score, 11-4.

* Bracket #3, Sun, 12/3, 1:15pm, vs. Texas Slam
Believe it or not, this was a close game until the end. Slam jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 1st on a single, an error and a walk. We got 1 in the 3rd when Leslie reached on a fielder's choice and Shelby drove her in with a single. Slam responded with another run on 3 consecutive hits. In the top of the 5th with Slam leading 3-1, the wheels fell off and Slam scored 8 runs on 4 walks, 2 errors, and 3 hits (one of them on a monster home run by Bre). Final score, 11-1.

* Bracket #4, Sun, 12/3, 2:40pm, vs. Texas Catz
Due to some late games, we got started about an hour late and the cold of the late afternoon was starting to settle in. However, it didn't cool of our bats as we pecked away in nearly every inning with a run or two to stay ahead. We scored 2 in the 1st, 2 in the 3rd, 1 in the 4th, 2 in the 5th, and 3 in the 6th for our 10 runs. We had 10 hits highlighted by a double and a triple from Shelby. Keely threw a 3-hitter for the shutout victory. Final score, 10-0.

* Championship Game, Sun, 12/3, 4:05pm, vs. Texas Slam
Slam jumped out to a 3-0 lead with some heavy hitting in the 1st inning. We got 1 back in the 2nd when Holly singled, Leslie reached on an error and Alexis drove in Holly with a single. They got their run back in the 3rd on a line drive homer from Dana. We responded with another run in the 4th when Courtney singled, moved to 2nd on a Holly ground out, moved to 3rd on a wild pitch and scored on a single from Leslie. Keely came on in relief and held them hitless for the final 2 1/3 innings, but we couldn't score in the final 2 innings despite lead off runners in the 5th (Shelby walk) and the 6th (Courtney double). Final score, 4-2.

TROUBLE TAKES 4TH AT TEXAS SLAM TURKEY JAM

With beautiful fall weather for the weekend, we ended up with a 4th place finish at the Texas Slam Turkey Jam at Imperial Park.

* Pool #1, Sat, 11/18, 8:00am, vs. Texas Slam
Slam jumped out to an early with 2 runs in the top of the first. We responded with a run in the bottom half when Shelby singled, Holly moved her to 2nd with a ground out, a wild pitch moved her to 3rd and Tiffany singled up the middle to drive her in. They got another in the 3rd to take a 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the 3rd, Shelby led off with a double and scored after 2 wild pitches. Consecutive singles from Tiffany, Keely, and Tabatha loaded the bases and an error allowed Tiffany to score. Keely and Shelby alternated innings and combined for 8 strikeouts over the 3 innings. The game ended in a 3-3 tie.

* Pool #2, Sat, 11/18, 10:20am, vs. Royal Purples
The bats were hot in this game as we started off with 4 runs in the 1st. After singles from Shelby and Ally, Tiffany doubled both of them in. The other two came in after a single from Keely, Tabatha and Rachel reaching on errors, and Erin and Cayla reaching on fielder's choices. They responded with 2 runs in the bottom half of the inning. The 2nd only produced 1 run, but it was another bomb from Ally that cleared the fence with ease. The 3rd inning broke the game wide open as we tallied 8 runs that included a catcher's interference, a walk, a hit batter, an error, 4 consecutive singles from Holly, Ally, Tiffany, and Keely, a 2-run double from Tabatha and a single from Rachel. Shelby and Keely combined on a 2-hitter, striking out 5. Final score, 13-2.

* Bracket #1, Sat, 11/18, 4:40pm, vs. Missouri City Magic
The crucial first bracket game gave us a big blow as we let one get away from us as the Magic battled tough and pulled out a 7-3 victory. We gave them some help as only 3 of the runs were earned. We scored 1 in the 3rd when Erin singled and Shelby brought her home with a triple. 2 more in the 5th when Tabatha doubled, moved to 3rd on a Keely ground out and scored on a Rachel ground out. Erin then reached on an error and Shelby got her home with a double. Keely went the distance while striking out 6. This put us through the longest portion of the loser's bracket meaning we had to play an 8:55pm Saturday game, then return for an 8am Sunday game and then play 4 more in a row beginning at noon on Sunday.

* Bracket #2, Sat, 11/18, 8:55pm, vs. Lady Titans
The Titans jumped out early with a 3-0 lead in the 1st due to 3 walks and an error. We started coming back in the 2nd when Keely and Cayla walked and Shelby drove home Keely with a single. We added 2 more in the third when Ally walked and Tiffany singled and after 3 wild pitches, both scored. The 4th inning saw us score 2 more. Erin led off with a single. Shelby had another extra-base hit and her double scored Erin. An error and a ground out from Tiffany brought Shelby in to finish off the scoring. Alexis came on in relief and pitched a strong 4 innings giving up only 2 hits. Final score, 5-3.

* Bracket #3, Sun, 11/19, 8:00am, vs. Royal Purples
This was a close game from start to finish. Shelby led off with another double. Tabatha sacrificed her over to 3rd. Ally was hit by a pitch and Tiffany singled to drive in Shelby. As it turned out, that was the only run of the game as we finished with a 1-0 victory after 5 innings. Alexis pitched 4 strong innings again and Keely came on in the 5th for the save as they combined on a 4-hit shutout.

* Bracket #4, Sun, 11/19, 12:15pm, vs. Phaze 2
Another quick start helped us as we jumped to a 3-0 lead in the 1st. Shelby and Tabatha started it off with singles. Ally crushed a big double to right-center to drive them both in. Courtney moved Ally to 3rd on a ground out and Holly singled to left to bring in Ally. They got their lone run in the 3rd to make it 3-1. We added 2 more in the 4th when Courtney and Holly led off with singles. A wild pitch moved them up to 2nd and 3rd. Keely then hit a sacrifice fly to score Erin (who was pinch-running for Courtney). An RBI single from Alexis finished off the scoring. Keely scattered 5 hits over 6 innings giving up just the one run. Final score, 5-1.

* Bracket #5, Sun, 11/19, 1:40pm, vs. Texas Swing
There was no scoring until the 3rd inning when Swing pushed across 2 runs on 3 singles and 2 walks. We responded with 1 run in the bottom half when Leslie hit a rocket to the gap in right center for a triple. Alexis brought her home with a single. Swing added single runs in the 4th and 5th due largely to errors on our part. Shelby and Alexis worked together to only allow 2 earned runs over 5 innings. We couldn't manage any more runs, so a 4-1 final knocked us out with a 4th place finish.

TROUBLE TIES FOR 13TH OUT OF 24 AT RONALD McDONALD

Despite not developing much offense, Trouble managed to squeeze a 13th place finish at the Ronald McDonald Tournament on Oct 28-29.

* Pool #1, Sat, 10/28, 8:00am, vs. Sudden Impact
Shelby and Ally provided the only offense with singles. Alexis pitched well, only allowing 2 earned runs. The defense gave them a few more. Final score, 7-0.

* Pool #2, Sat, 10/28, 1:50pm, vs. Katy Express
Again, only a two-hit attack, this time with Leslie and Rachel providing the singles. Shelby didn't allow any earned runs as the defense allowed some more. Final score, 3-0.

* Bracket #1, Sat, 10/28, 4:20pm, vs. Katy Cruisers
Thru 4 innings, all we had was a lead-off single from Shelby in the first. The 5th brought a lead-off double from Tabatha and a single from Keely, but we couldn't get any across the plate. Keely held them scoreless throughout, with their first runner not getting on until the 5th inning. Despite some well-placed bunts, the defense held strong and we got out of the inning with 2 hits, but no runs. Keely got them 1-2-3 in the 6th as time was out. That left it up to us in the bottom half. Shelby led off with a big double. Holly reached on a perfectly-placed bunt single to move Shelby to 3rd. Ally came up and hit a line drive to shortstop and they were able to double off the runner at first, but Shelby was alert and left for home during the play. The throw from 1st was in time, but Shelby slid around the tag for the game-winning, walk-off double play! Final score, 1-0.

* Bracket #2, Sat, 10/28, 7:00pm, vs. Katy Express
This time we got just one hit ... but what a hit!! Down 6-0 in the bottom of the 4th with time out, Ally came up and launched a bomb over the center field fence. Final score, 6-1.

* Bracket #3, Sat, 10/28, 8:20pm, vs. Texas Crossfire
Only one hit in this game, but we managed a way to scratch 2 runs across. Meanwhile, Keely dominated with a one-hit shutout. In the 1st, Ally walked and Tiffany rocketed a double to deep left-center for our 1st run. In the 5th, Alexis reached on an error and Shelby walked. Ally reached on a fielder's choice as Alexis was cut down at the plate, with Shelby moving over to 3rd. A wild pitch brought in our insurance run. Final score, 2-0.

* Bracket #4, Sun, 10/29, 9:20am, vs. High Voltage
The offense came around this game, getting solid contact throughout game. Unfortunately, our 5 hits were scattered across 4 innings and didn't result in any runs. In the meantime, the High Voltage bats were electrified as they scored 2 in the 1st, 2 in the 2nd, and 1 in the 3rd. Final score 5-0.

TROUBLE TAKES 2ND AT MAYHEM V

Front Row (L-R): Leslie, Alexis, Holly, Shelby, Tabatha, Tiffany
Back Row: Erin, Ally, Courtney, Keely, Rachel, Cayla

Playing in the 18U division again ... we were able to finish in 2nd place ...

* Pool #1, Sat, 10/14, 10:20am, vs. Lady Titans
We got off to a good start as we took a 1-0 lead after 1. Shelby was hit by a pitch and moved up to 2nd when Holly reached on an error. A wild pitch moved them up a base. Tiffany and Ally each followed with walks, Ally's driving in the run. In the 3rd, we added 2 more when Tiffany led off with a walk. A wild pitch and a stolen base got her to 3rd. After Courtney reached on a dropped third strike and took 2nd one pitch later, Tabatha came up and ripped a long double to drive them both in. The 3-0 lead held up as Keely pitched a perfect game with 9 batters up and 9 batters down, 4 by strikeout. Final, 3-0.

* Pool #2, Sat, 10/14, 11:30am, vs. Royal Purples
A closer game, but we got ahead early in the first. Shelby and Holly singled to start things off. Ally reached on a fielder's choice with Shelby out at 3rd. Then Courtney drove a 2-run double. We added another in the 3rd when Tiffany walked and Ally singled her to 2nd. After Courtney reached on a fielder's choice with Tiffany out at 3rd, Tabatha singled to score Ally. Shelby gave up just 3 hits and 2 runs and struck out 5. Final score, 3-2.

* Bracket #1, Sat, 10/14, 1:50pm, vs. Royal Purples
Bracket play started out with a bang. All the bats seemed to get hot at once. 4 runs in the 1st, 3 in the 2nd, and 7 more in the 3rd gave us a run-rule victory. Many highlights in this game as we punched out 17 hits capped off by a mighty 3-run blast over the right-center field fence by Ally. Keely topped things off by pitching a no-hitter with 3 strikeouts. Final score, 14-0.

* Bracket #2, Sat, 10/14, 4:50pm, vs. The Woodlands Shock
We took only 1 inning off before heating up the bats again. They took an early 1-0 lead in the first on no hits, but we responded in the 2nd. Keely got things started with a triple to right-center. Cayla walked and took second on the following pitch. Shelby reached on an error that had Keely scoring and Cayla getting to 3rd and Shelby to 2nd. Tiffany came up and hit a 2-run single and ended up on third. Ally finished the inning off with a single to drive in Tiffany. With 4 runs in the 2nd, we followed up with 2 more in the 3rd. Tabatha was hit by a pitch and Keely poked another triple to drive her in. A wild pitch brought Keely home and ended the scoring for us. Keely ended up with the win scattering 3 hits and striking out 3. Final score, 6-2.

* Bracket #3, Sat, 10/14, 7:50pm, vs. Lady Titans
This was a hard fought game throughout. The Lady Titans struck first in the bottom of the 3rd with 2 unearned runs due to a couple of walks, an error, and a run-scoring ground out. We got 1 back in the 4th when Tabatha singled and Leslie drove one to the fence for an RBI double. They tacked on another unearned run in their half thanks to 2 walks and 2 errors. The inning ended with 12 seconds on the clock, forcing a decisive 5th inning. Things looked promising as Cayla lead off with a walk. Holly reached on a fielder's choice and with an error on the play, Cayla was safe at 2nd. Tiffany drove in Cayla with a single which moved Holly to 3rd. After Tiffany took 2nd, Ally hit a sacrifice fly to score Holly to tie it up. The bottom of the 5th saw the Lady Titans get their first hit - a triple down the right field line. The next batter followed up with a walk-off single to win the game. Shelby and Keely combined to give up just 2 hits over 4 innings. Final score, 4-3.

Sunday morning, the rains came and washed out the rest of the tournament.

TROUBLE FINISHES 3RD AT BEKAH BOO FEST

Front Row (L-R): Tabatha, Andy, Erin, Cayla, Holly, Alexis, Shelby
Middle Row: Courtney, Ally, Keely, Rachel, Tiffany, Leslie, Coach Jerry
Back Row: Coach Al, Coach Charles, Coach John

Once again we played up in the 18U division and, this time, we walked away with 3rd place honors ...

* Pool #1, Sat, 10/7, 8:00am, vs. Texas Connection
Our bats were going good to start off the tournament. We scored in each of the first 3 innings. We got 1 in the first when Shelby singled and Holly reached on a fielder's choice. Tiffany walked and stole second and Ally came thru with a sacrifice fly. In the 2nd, Tabatha walked, stole 2nd, and scored on an outfield error. We opened it up in the 4th with 4 consecutive singles from Cayla, Shelby, Holly, and Tiffany. Courtney followed with a 2-run singled and Tabatha came thru with a 2-run double. Our excellent pitching continued as Shelby threw a 2-hitter, striking out 7. Final score, 6-1.

* Pool #2, Sat, 10/7, 9:15am, vs. Turn 2
After a scoreless 1st, the bats started going again. A 3-run 2nd happened thanks to a double from Ally and Tabatha driving her in with a single, then Leslie walking. After a pitching change, Erin walked, Rachel drove in a run by getting hit by a pitch and Cayla drove in the final run of the inning with a single. 3 more were tacked on in the 4th. Ally started this one again with another double and Courtney followed by driving her in with a triple. Tabatha walked and Leslie hit a 2-run single. Keely dominated with a 1-hitter, striking out 2. Final score, 6-1.

* Bracket #1, Sat, 10/7, 3:40pm, vs. MC Elite
This was close for most of the game. We managed a run in the 2nd when Courtney singled and Tabatha reached on a fielder's choice. Keely then hit a big triple to give us the lead. It wasn't until the top of the 4th that any other scoring occurred. We got 3 more when Courtney doubled, Tabatha singled, and Leslie singled to score Courtney. After a ground out and a wild pitch scored Tabatha, Cayla doubled to score Leslie. Shelby threw a 2-hit shutout, striking out 9. Final score, 4-0.

* Bracket #2, Sat, 10/7, 6:30pm, vs. Royal Purples
This was scoreless until the 4th when Tabatha singled, Leslie reached on an error and Keely singled to load the bases. Cayla drove in a run with a ground out and Holly drove in another with a walk. We got another in the 5th when Courtney reached on an error, Tabatha sacrificed her to 2nd. Leslie moved her up on a ground out and Keely drove her in with another triple. Keely did it again on the mound, throwing a 2-hitter and striking out 8. Final score, 3-0.

* Bracket #3, Sun, 10/8, 9:25am, vs. Lady Stros
As is usually the case when we play the Stros, it was a low-scoring affair. Unfortunately, they did all of the scoring when they put together 2 runs in the 3rd on some timely singles bunched together. Despite a strong pitching performance from Shelby, our bats were held in check and moved to the loser's bracket. Final score, 2-0.

* Bracket #4, Sun, 10/8, 12:15pm, vs. Texas Slam
Unlike our last game against the Slam (a 12-11 slugfest), this was a pitcher's duel. The only runs of the game were in the 3rd by us when Rachel timed a change-up and ripped a double down the left-field line. Holly drove her in with a single and Ally moved Holly up with a single of her own. Tabatha completed the scoring with an RBI single. While the Slam were able to put together 6 hits, they were scattered over 5 innings and Keely got the victory, 2-0.

* Bracket #5, Sun, 10/8, 1:40pm, vs. College Station Tigers Teal
A little more scoring this time, starting in our 2nd inning. Tabatha reached on an error and stole 2nd. Leslie reached on an error, moving Tabatha to 3rd. Keely's ground out scored Tabatha and Erin's singled scored Leslie. After they scored 2 unearned runs in the top of the 3rd, we opened it up in the bottom half with 5 hits in a row - singles by Ally, Tiffany, and Tabatha, and doubles by Courtney and Leslie pushed us to a 6-2 lead which is how it ended. It was Alexis' turn for the victory as she scattered 7 hits over 5 innings and no earned runs, striking out 4.

* Bracket #6, Sun, 10/8, 3:05pm, vs. National RBI
It appeared that the 4th game of the day and 8th game of the weekend may have taken its toll as we played a bit sloppy in this game. We "gave up" 4 runs in the 1st on a combination of walks, errors, mental errors, etc. It didn't end in the 2nd as 2 more runs were given up helped by two more errors. We managed only 1 run on a Shelby singled and an Ally double. Final score, 7-1 and we were done.

We added another in the 2nd when Shelby walked again and Holly moved her up when she reached on an error followed by a wild pitch to plate Shelby. While rain washed out Sunday, 9/24, we were able to finish the tournament on the following Sunday.

* Round Robin #4, Sun, 10/1, 3:05pm, vs. Royal Purples
Another game where we scored in each inning. 1 in the 1st after Holly walked and Ally doubled her in. 2 in the 2nd when Tabatha, Leslie, Erin, and Shelby singled. 2 more in the 3rd when Ally reached on a dropped 3rd strike, Courtney singled, Rachel walked, Leslie drove in 1 with a single and Alexis drove in the other with a bases loaded walk. Shelby threw a 1-hitter and struck out 5 again. Final, 5-0.

* Round Robin #5, Sun, 10/1, 4:30pm, vs. Havoc
In our closest game of the fall, we dropped to a 2-0 deficit in the 4th and responded with 1 in the bottom half. The fall season started off like the summer season ... high probability of rain for the weekend ... but, this time, the softball gods smiled on Sugar Land and kept it relatively rain-free as the Fire Up The Fall tournament completed Sunday evening. Being our 16U debut, the Trouble Makers were out to prove we belong with the best and went undefeated throughout the tournament to take home the championship. Here's a recap ...

* Pool #1, Sat, 9:15am, vs. Texas Slam
We got to start off the season against our good friends and, like it usually is, it was a nip-and-tuck battle. After a scoreless first inning, we got on the board in the bottom of the second. Keely singled and Rachel walked and Erin took advantage of her first Trouble at-bat with a double to the fence in left to clear the bases and give us a 2-0 lead. But the Slam responded in the 3rd with a couple of walks and well-placed double to tie it up. With time running out and Shelby on 3rd, a ground ball to 2nd was enough to get her home and give us the win, 3-2. It was a combined one-hitter for Shelby and Keely.

* Pool #2, Sat, 10:30am, vs. Lady Titans
As a sign of things to come, our bats came around in this game. We jumped out to 5-0 lead in the 1st. We got singles from Shelby, Tabatha, Ally, and Leslie. Throw in a walk from Courtney and a couple of errors and that gave us the lead for good. Both teams came back for runs in the 2nd, with ours coming on Tabatha reaching on an error and Tiffany tripling her home. Once again, Keely and Shelby combined for a tough 2-hitter.

* Bracket #1, Sat, 5:15pm, vs. Texas Slam
The luck of the draw lined us up against Texas Slam again and we got off to a good bracket start. After two scoreless innings, we broke it open in the 3rd when Holly started it off with a single. Shelby moved her to 2nd with a ground out. Tiffany walked and Ally started off the scoring with an RBI single. Courtney loaded the bases with a single and Keely cleaned them all off with a double ending up with a 4-0 lead which is how it ended. Shelby was nails throwing a 2-hit shutout while striking out 6.

* Bracket #2, Sat, 8:15pm, vs. Barber's Hill Elite
While the Elite played us tough, it was time for our bats to explode with a 17-hit attack. 2 in the 1st came across on a Shelby single, an RBI double from Ally and an RBI triple from Courtney. 4 came across in the 2nd when Leslie singled, an RBI single from Shelby, a Tabatha single, then a 2-RBI Tiffany double and an RBI Ally double. 5 more in the 4th on an 8-hit inning, highlighted by another RBI double from Tiffany and another RBI triple from Courtney. Final score, 11-1. This time, it was Keely's turn to throw a 2-hitter with 5 strikeouts.

* Bracket #3, Sun, 12:30pm, vs. Texas Nine
Shelby and Keely made it easy on the offense by throwing a combined no-hit shutout. It took us until the 3rd inning before we got things going. But like the other games, we got a big inning in the 4th started by a Holly single. After Alexis reached on an error, Shelby drove in Holly with a single. Newcomer Cayla reached on an fielder's choice and Tiffany followed with an RBI single. Ally walked and Courtney came thru again with a 2-RBI double. We added 1 in the 5th when Holly and Alexis reached on errors and Shelby got on with a fielder's choice. Tiffany ended the scoring with an RBI single and the game ended 5-0.

* Championship game, Sun, 5:00pm, vs. (who else) Texas Slam
The Slam fought their way thru the loser's bracket to the championship game and you could tell they were getting better with every game. Despite having our pitching holding the opposing teams for 4 total runs for the whole tournament up to that point, the Slam came out firing. After a 1-2-3 1st for us, they opened up with their first 7 batters getting on with 6 singles and a walk. We managed to throw out a couple of the runners on the bases and Alexis came in to strike out the next batter to end the inning. Down 5-0 after one inning, we didn't get down. We responded with a huge 9-run 2nd inning. After 7 hits and going thru 2 pitchers who combined to throw 65 pitches in that inning, it was 9-5 going into the bottom of the 2nd. The first 11 batters reached base (7 singles, 3 walks, and a fielder's choice). That didn't seem to phase the Slam as they came back with 3 more in the bottom of the 2nd. It was now 9-8 and the 70 minute time clock expired going into the top of the third!! We went down scoreless and the Slam tied it up 9-9 with a run in the bottom half and brought on ITB. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, Courtney started it off with a double to the gap in right to clear the bases. We had to keep them from scoring 2 in the bottom half, but they didn't make it easy. After a run-scoring single newcomer Erin fired the ball to Holly at home to nail the 2nd runner at the plate for the second out. Despite getting hurt on the play at the plate, Holly was able to dive and catch the short pop-up from the next batter to end the game and give us the championship! Final score 11-10.

TROUBLE FINISHES 7TH AT USFA WORLD SERIES

It looked like we brought all of the Texas rain to Florida with us, but, fortunately, the rain was always at the park that we weren't at, so we got all of the games in. We found out quickly that it would take a couple of games before we got into our rhythm. Fortunately, there were 3 pool games, so we played well once the bracket games started. Here's a recap ...

* Pool #1, Mon, 2:00pm, vs. Georgia Impact Red
The pitching was good from Alexis and Keely, but we didn't handle their bunts well and could not get untracked at the plate. They scratched across runs in the 1st, 2nd, and 5th innings. We managed only two hits (from Holly and Leslie) and couldn't string anything together. Final score, 3-0.

* Pool #2, Mon, 6:30pm, vs. Indiana Earthquake Gold
This time it was the defense's turn to break down as we committed 5 errors in the first two innings and, before we knew it, it was 8-0 after 2 innings. The 3rd inning is when things finally got turned around. The defense solidified and, in the 4th, the bats started to come to life. We pushed across 3 in the 4th after Leslie reached on an error, Lori walked and Shelby drove them both in with a triple. J.T. scored Shelby with a ground out and Tiffany followed with a single and Courtney with a walk. Unfortunately, it was too little, too late and we lost 8-3.

* Pool #3, Tue, 12:30pm, vs. Southern Elite (Illinois)
Now that things were clicking, we enjoyed a game where things went our way. Although it was a close game, it was a total team effort as all 4 pitchers got into the game, each one pitching a strong inning. We got all of the runs we needed in the 1st when Shelby led off with a single and got moved to second on a ground out from Holly. J.T. drove in Shelby with a single and advanced to 2nd on the play. Courtney then delivered a single to right to bring in J.T. Final score, 2-1.

* Elimination Bracket #1, Wed, 2:00pm, vs. Frisco Force
We got off to a good start against the team that sent us home from Nationals last year. The 2nd inning produced 2 runs for us as Courtney led off with a single and advanced to 3rd when Tabatha followed with a single of her own. Tabatha moved up to 2nd on the next pitch and Alexis drove a single that scored Lori (courtesy running for Courtney). When Alexis was thrown out stealing second, Tabatha raced home for the 2nd run. Shelby threw a complete game shutout, scattering 4 hits and striking out 9 in 5 innings. Final score, 2-0.

* Elimination Bracket #2, Wed, 5:00pm, vs. Mississippi Elite
A good strong start produced 5 runs in the 1st for us. Holly singled and J.T. walked. Tiffany came up and lined a double to score Holly. Courtney walked to load the bases, then Tabatha lined anouther double to score J.T. and Tiffany. Alexis singled to drive in Tabatha and end the scoring in the inning. Keely was on the mound for this game and gave up just one earned run while giving up 6 hits striking out 4 in 4 innings for the win. Final score, 5-2.

* Elimination Bracket #3, Thu, 2:00pm, vs. North Fulton Flames (Georgia)
A couple of walks, a couple of hits, and an error allowed the Flames to score 3 in the first. Keely came on in relief of Shelby to throw 3 2/3 strong innings, but we could only muster 1 run in the bottom of the 5th when Lori walked, stole 2nd, and came home on Leslie's single. Final score, 4-1.

* Elimination Bracket #4, Thu, 5:00pm, vs. Orange Crush (Texas)
This was a crucial game as a loss would send us home on Thursday and a win would put us into the Gold Bracket which included a day off on Friday and games starting on Saturday. It was neck-and-neck for 3 innings as neither team managed to score any runs. However, we broke thru in the top of the 4th when Shelby reached on an error and advanced to 2nd on Holly's ground out. J.T. walked and Tiffany hit a shot over the center fielder's head to clear the bases and give us a 2-0 lead. An insurance run was added in the 5th when we loaded the bases after Alexis reached on an error and Lori and Rachel singled. Shelby battled on her at-bat drawing a full count and fouling off three pitches before drawing a run-scoring walk. Shelby started the game and pitched three innings of no-hit ball and striking out 8. Keely came on in relief for two innings to get the save. Final score, 3-0.

This completed the Elimination Bracket play with Trouble finishing 2nd in the bracket and earning a spot in the Gold Bracket. It was off for a day of fun on Friday and Gold Bracket games starting up Saturday morning.

* Gold Bracket #1, Sat, 8:00am, vs. Indiana Earthquake Gold
This turned out to be a hitter's game as we scored first in the top of the 2nd when Courtney singled and Lori went in as a pinch-runner. She promptly stole 2nd, went to 3rd on a grounder to short, then scored on another grounder to short. They responded with 3 unearned runs in the bottom half of the inning, courtesy of a couple of errors and a walk and a single. They added a 4th run in the 3rd on a hit batter, passed ball, and a double. In the 5th, the hard-hit balls that we had been hitting all game now started to fall in. Leslie walked and Shelby singled. Holly reached on an error allowing Leslie to score. J.T. came up and drove a shot to the left-center field gap scoring both Shelby and Holly to tie the game at 4. However, they came back in the bottom of the 5th with 2 more runs on 3 hits, a sacrifice bunt, and a fielder's choice. That would complete the scoring with the Earthquake up 6-4 and sending us home.

WASHOUT AT TEXAS OPEN

Same old story ... rain, rain, rain. We played Friday night, but Saturday games were cancelled and Sunday was cancelled after two games were played.

* Pool #1, Fri, 7:30pm, vs. Spring-Klein Sliders
It took a few innings, but we got going in the 4th inning. J.T. walked and Tiffany drove her home with a triple. Then we really got in a groove in the 5th inning, scoring 4 more. Keely, Rachel, Leslie, and Lori all reached base while Shelby and J.T. banged out 2-RBI doubles. Alexis threw a two-hit shutout and faced the minimum number of batters (15 in 5 innings) as both runners were thrown out on the basepaths. Final score, 5-0.

* Pool #2, Fri, 9:00pm, vs. Katy Express
This was a game to forget. We were no-hit and gave up 4 earned runs out of 8 total due to 4 errors. Enough said. Final, 8-0.

Just as we were ready to play our first bracket game at 3:30 on Saturday, the approaching thunderstorm cancelled all Saturday games so we went home without playing a game. In addition, our first Sunday game was scheduled for 6:30am!!

* Bracket #1, Sun, 6:30am, vs. Xtreme Black
This game would determine whether we went to the Gold or Silver bracket. It was a hard-fought game as each team managed just 3 hits. In the first, Shelby retired them 3-up, 3-down. The 2nd started off a little shaky with a single, hit batter, and a walk. Keely came in with the bases loaded and nobody out and got the first batter to pop-up to 2nd. The next batter hit a hard grounder to Shelby at 3rd, who fired to Courtney at home for the force and then on to J.T. at first to complete the double play and end the inning!! J.T. and Tiffany also turned in a couple of fielding gems to keep them from scoring. It was a good thing, because it was 0-0 going into the bottom of the 4th with time running out. Courtney got on with a single. Lori was put in as a courtesy runner and promptly stole 2nd. Tabatha followed with a single to move Lori to 3rd. With Alexis at the plate, Tabatha went to steal 2nd. A throw was made towards 2nd allowing Lori to scamper home with the winning run! Final score, 1-0 and on to the Gold bracket.

* Gold Bracket #1, Sun, 10:15am, vs. Texas Storm
Another game that started off as a pitcher's duel. We scored one in the first when Shelby singled and was moved up to 2nd on J.T's single. Tiffany reached on a fielder's choice as J.T. was forced at 2nd, but Shelby came around to score. They tied it up in the 2nd on a single, an error, a couple of stolen bases and another error. After 4 innings it was still tied 1-1, so it was on to ITB. Lori started at 3rd and Tabatha started at 2nd. Alexis laid down a great bunt that scored Lori and moved Tabatha to 3rd, with Alexis taking 2nd at the end of the play. Leslie repeated with a bunt single of her own to load the bases. Rachel then singled in Tabatha, keeping the bases loaded. Shelby hit a fielder's choice with Alexis forced at home, bases still loaded. Holly singled in a run and J.T. followed with a fielder's choice. Tiffany then ripped a 3-run triple to end the scoring. They led off the bottom of the 5th with a sacrifice fly to score a run, but then the next batter hit a liner to Shelby who turned and doubled off the runner at 2nd thanks to some acrobatic fielding by Holly to end the game.

Now it was time for lunch. Unfortunately, while we were away, the skies opened up again and washed out the rest of the tournament.

Game recaps:
Pool 1: Trouble 5, Spring-Klein Sliders 0
Pool 2: Katy Express 8, Trouble 0
Bracket 1: Trouble 1, Xtreme Black 0
Gold Bracket 1: Trouble 7, Texas Storm 2

TROUBLE FINISHES FIFTH AT USSSA STATE

Well, since it was a weekend and there was softball to be played, rain had to be in the picture.

* Pool #1, Sat, 8:00am, vs. Texas Bandits
Our bats started off strong as we scored 4 times in the first. Shelby walked and Holly doubled. J.T. hit another double to drive in two. Tiffany tripled to drive in J.T. and Courtney scored Tiffany on a ground out. The 3rd inning saw another 4 score as Lori started it off with a single. Shelby walked again and Holly drove in Lori with a single. J.T. hit another 2-run double and Tabatha drove in J.T. with a single to finish off the scoring. J.T. went the distance on the mound throwin 3 innings of 1-hit ball. They managed a couple of hits in the fourth when time ran out. Final score, 8-0.

* Pool #2, Sat, 11:00am, vs. Texas Velocity
This was a pitcher's duel to the end. Keely pitched 6 strong innings, scattering 4 hits and striking out 6 and allowing no runs. However, our bats were silent as we managed only 2 hits and never had a runner past first base. Final score, 0-0.
and, on a second error, scored the game's only run. Final 1-0.

The rains came during the pool games and cancelled the remaining pool games and wiped out Saturday play. It was decided to have a single-elimination bracket on Sunday.

* Bracket #1, Sun, 9:45am, vs. Lady Titans
Shelby took the mound and pitched a complete game over 7 innings, giving up 8 hits and striking out 7. Unfortunately, they had one inning where they were able to push across 2 runs with a single, double, bunt, and bloop single. We got a run in the 2nd when Courtney led off with a single. Lori went in as a courtesy runner and prompty stole 2nd. Rachel moved her to 3rd on a ground out and Alexis drove her in with a single to right-center. Although hitting a few other balls hard, we never managed any other runs. So the long, 7-inning game ended with go the Titans' way, 2-1. With the single-elimination format, we were out.

TROUBLE CROWNED 14U USFA SOUTH TEXAS STATE CHAMPS!!!

Despite Mother Nature's best efforts, nothing could stop Trouble from winning the 14U USFA South Texas State Championship !!!

* Pool #1, Sat, 8:00am, vs. Austin Storm
We started off in Centennial Park in Pearland against the Austin Storm in our first pool game. After a couple of close innings, we were tied going into the bottom of the third when we managed to bat out the rest of the game. We had a 4-run inning that included walks to Lori and Alexis, singles by Shelby, Tiffany, Courtney, and Tabatha. J.T. drove in a run with a sac fly and Holly had the big hit of the inning, lining a 2-run double. J.T. scattered 5 hits while not allowing an earned run and striking out 3. Final score, 5-1.

* Pool #2, Sat, 10:30pm, vs. Texas Wildfire
Alexis pitched and threw a one-hit shutout while striking out 2. It was close and no one had scored going into the bottom of the 4th. But Shelby reached on an error and, on a second error, scored the game's only run. Final 1-0.

* Bracket #1, Sat, 6:10pm, vs. Texas Eclipse
We moved over to the Dobie High School field for our first bracket game against the hard-hitting Eclipse. Despite Keely pitching a strong game, they finally got on track and managed to squeeze together a few hits and put three runs across in the 3rd and 4th innings. Tabatha was the only one to get a hit as we couldn't figure out their pitcher. Final score had Eclipse winning 3-0.

The rains were finally too much even for El Franco Lee Park and their tarps as Sunday was washed out. After trying to reschedule on Monday and then Tuesday, we were finally able to resume on Wednesday night. Due to the delays, it was now a single elimination bracket for the 8 teams.

* Bracket #2, Wed, 6:30pm, vs. Lady Warriors
It was another long scoreless game for 4 innings when our bats came alive. The top of the 5th got cranking with a single from Alexis. Rachel followed with a single of her own. Shelby came up and reached on an error which scored Alexis and left runners on 2nd and 3rd. Holly came up big again with a 2-run single to give us a 3-0 lead. Shelby was stingy in this game, only allowing an unearned run while throwing a one-hitter and striking out 7. Final score, 3-1.

* Bracket #3, Wed, 8:00pm, vs. Lethal Weapon
This time we got started early with 3 runs in the bottom of the first. Shelby walked and Holly singled. J.T. hit a fly to center that was missed which allowed Shelby to score and left runners on 2nd and 3rd. Courtney came up and singled to score Holly. With J.T. at 3rd, Courtney stole 2nd, which allowed J.T. to complete the double steal and score. As it turned out, that was all of the scoring in the game (3-0). Kelly pitched a one-hit shutout and struck out 5 and it was on the 'ship!!

* State Championship Game, Thu, 7:30pm, vs. Texas Eclipse
This time it was Shelby's turn to face the Eclipse and she came thru big time! She scattered 4 hits and struck out 6 while shutting them out. The lone run of the game came on a walk to Courtney followed by Tabatha slicing a triple down the left field line. With the Eclipse batting in the top of the fifth, we needed three outs to take State. Never giving up, they led off with 2 singles; so they had runners on 1st and 2nd and nobody out. Shelby came thru with a strike out and a pop to 1st. With the last batter at the plate, it came down to a full count. A ball and the bases would be loaded with the top of their lineup coming up, a strike and the championship was ours. Shelby fired a strike for the last out and it was celebration time !!!

TROUBLE FINISHES FOURTH AT SUMMER SIZZLE

Summer Sizzle (16U) June 5-6, Imperial Park

Sizzling it was as the rains stopped in the nick of time.

* Pool #1, Sat, 12:40pm, vs. Havoc
A slow start as Havoc jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but as time was running out, the bats started coming alive. We got runners on 2nd and 3rd after J.T. and Tiffany singled. Courtney then doubled them in to take the lead. After Tabatha singled and the third out was made, time was up and we came away with a 2-1 win. J.T. scattered 5 hits over 4 innings to take the win.

* Pool #2, Sat, 1:50pm, vs. Texas Peppers
The hot bats carried over into the 2nd pool game. We pushed across 5 runs in the first as six consecutive batters reached base. Walks to J.T. and Tiffany were mixed in with singles from Holly, Courtney, and Keely and a double from Tabatha. The 2nd inning continued with 3 more runs on a single by Lori with Shelby driving her in with a triple. Holly drove in Shelby with a double. 2 runs were all that Alexis would allow on 3 hits - a very efficient game. Final score, 8-2.

* Bracket #1, Sat, 6:00pm, vs. South Texas Sting
We always seem to play close games against this team and this was another one. They started the scoring in the bottom of the 1st on a couple of singles, a groundout, a suicide squeeze and an error. They returned the favor in the 2nd as Courtney singled and was safe at 2nd on Tabatha's fielder's choice. Alexis then followed with a dribbler in front of the plate. The throw was wide at first and rolled all the way to the right field fence. Everyone came into score only to have the last run negated by an appeal for missing third base. They added another in the 4th on two doubles. Keely scattered 6 hits and struck out 5 while allowing just 2 earned runs. We could not put together any other offense, so it was off to the loser's bracket after a 3-2 loss.

* Bracket #2, Sun, 11:00am, vs. Texas Peppers
Our 2nd bracket game brought us up against the Peppers again. This time it was a pitcher's duel all the way to the last inning. Shelby shut them out on a 2-hitter with 6 strikeouts. We finally pushed across a run in the 4th when Shelby led off with a double. Tiffany singled up the middle to score Shelby. We needed to kill some time in the top of the 5th and we did it the best way - by scoring runs. Tabatha started off with a double. Alexis moved her to 3rd with a single and advanced to 2nd. Keely was intentionally waked to load the bases. Rachel singled to score a run and keep the bases loaded. Leslie reached on a fielder's choice when they forced Alexis out at home. Shelby then dropped one down the 1st base line into right field to clear the bases and end up on 3rd. Holly finished off the scoring with an RBI ground out. Final score, 6-0

* Bracket #3, Sun, 12:30pm, vs. Havoc
This was a game that was not meant to be for us. Alexis pitched well but a lack of offense and defense spelled doom. Havoc scored one 1 in the 1st, 3 in the 2nd, and another one in the 4th and we could never quite get the other pitcher figured out despite scattering some well-hit balls to the outfield. We managed a little comeback in the bottom of the 5th as Alexis doubled and moved to 3rd on a wild pitch. Keely drove her in with a single. Shelby singled to move Keely to 2nd. Holly followed with another single, but Keely was cut down at the plate for the third out. Final score, 5-1.

Game recaps:
Pool 1: Trouble 2, Havoc 1
Pool 2: Trouble 8, Texas Peppers 2
Bracket 1: South Texas Sting 3, Trouble 2
Bracket 2: Trouble 6, Texas Peppers 0
Bracket 3: Havoc 5, Trouble 0

(unofficial) Tournament Rankings (W-L):
1st - South Texas Sting (4-0)
2nd - Havoc (3-2)
3rd - Crossfire (1-2)
4th - Texas Trouble (1-2)
5th - Texas Peppers (1-2)
5th - Cy-Fair Shock (0-2)

TROUBLE TAKES SECOND AT FUN IN THE SUN

Fun In The Sun, May 19-21, Softball USA

Well we finally got a weekend where we could play all of the scheduled games without having to worry about the weather!!

* Pool #1, Fri, 7:10pm, vs. Lady Stros
Not a lot of offense on either side in our first pool game. The lone run was scored by the Lady Stros in the top of the 4th on a couple of singles. J.T. pitched well, giving up only 3 hits in 4 innings, while striking out 3 and walking none. Final score, 1-0.

* Pool #2, Sat, 6:10pm, vs. Hearts of Texas
Another low-scoring affair with no score until the bottom of the 3rd when Hearts of Texas pushed across a run on a single and a double. With time running out, we managed a comeback loading the bases on consecutive singles from Courtney, Tabatha, and Alexis. In what turned out to be the last at-bat, Rachel shot one thru the right side of a pulled-in infield to drive in two runs as the umpire announced that time had run out. Alexis pitched well going 3 innings and allowing just 3 hits, while striking out 2 and walking 2 for the win. Final, 2-1.

* Pool #3, Sat, 7:20pm, vs. Texas Terror
We decided it was our turn to score first, so Shelby led off with a single. Holly singled her to 2nd and J.T. came up with a third consecutive single to score Shelby. Terror was able to score 3 in the bottom of the 2nd putting us in another comeback situation. The top of the third looked promising as we put the first three runners on with two walks to Shelby and J.T. and a single by Holly. However, some good Terror defense kept us from scoring, giving them the win. Final score, 3-1.

* Bracket #1, Sat, 8:30pm, vs. Texas Lady Cats
In the only single-elimination bracket game of the tournament played on Saturday, it was a struggle to see which would be the only team not returning to play on Sunday. Neither team gave in, and, as usual in our matchups with the Lady Cats, it was a nail-biter to the end. Rachel led off the top of the 3rd with a single. Shelby walked to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Holly laid down a crucial sacrifice bunt to move the runners to 2nd and 3rd. J.T. followed with a walk to load the bases. Keely drove in the run with a ground out to 2nd. Keely wouldn't give in on the mound, scattering 6 hits over 4 innings while striking out 3 and walking none. We threathened again in the top of the 4th, but some good defense by the Lady Cats had us with no runs, two outs and a runner on 2nd after Courtney singled, Tabatha doubled, and Alexis singled. So it was up to Keely to hold them in the bottom half of the inning with time expired. After the first out, they singled, stole 2nd, and moved to third on a ground out. That put the tying run on 3rd and the winning run at the plate against their speedy leadoff batter. She lined one up the middle that Keely was able to snag to end the game! Final, 1-0. We get to come back on Sunday!

* Bracket #2, Sun, 1:20pm, vs. '92 Texas Peppers
Rebounding from a bad game against this team in Burroughs Park, we managed to play them tight in a back-and-forth game and come out on top. They started off the scoring in the top of the 2nd with a leadoff triple that was able to score on a single a couple of batters later. We responded with 1 in the bottom of the 3rd when Rachel singled. Holly singled her to 2nd. Keely singled to center, allowing Rachel to score and we had tied it up, 1-1. They got an unearned run in the 4th to take a 2-1 lead. The bottom of the 4th started off with leadoff singles from Courtney, Tabatha, and Alexis. Lori (who was running for Courtney) scored on Alexis' hit. Shelby lifted a fly to short center that was fielded by the second baseman and an alert Tabatha tagged up at third and slid under the tag at home for another run. Keely held them in check in the 5th to preserve the victory at 3-2.

* Bracket #3, Sun, 5:20pm, vs. Texas Bandits
With late-running games, we didn't get started until 6:20, but we came out with a bang as Shelby tripled down the left field line, Holly singled to left to plate Shelby, then J.T. launched a triple to deep right-center to bring Holly home. Courtney followed with a double to bring home J.T. and we had a 3-0 lead after one. Rachel led off the 2nd with a big double down the left field line and Shelby singled her home to make it 4-0. They made it interesting in the bottom of the 4th when, with two out, they got a triple and a single to make it 4-1. But Shelby struck out the last batter to take us to the 'ship!

* Championship Game, Sun, 6:40pm, vs. Lady Stros
Not starting until 7:50pm, this game turned out to be a one-sided affair with the Lady Stros doing everything right and us doing everything wrong. They scored 2 in the first on some good bunting that we didn't handle like we usually do. In the second, they added 5 more runs on 6 hits. Even changing pitchers didn't seem to help as they scored 4 more in the 3rd on 5 hits. They added two more hits in the 4th when the umpire graciously ended the game as time expired. Our only offense consisted of a single from Rachel, a walk to Shelby and an RBI single from J.T. despite some other strong hits that always seemed to go right to them. Final 11-1 and a 2nd place finish.

TROUBLE FINISHES FIFTH AT FASTPITCH FIESTA

Fastpitch Fiesta, May 6-7, Burroughs Park, Tomball

This time April showers brought May ... showers. As with most weekends this year, weather played a role in our tournament, but it cleared up enough to get in a pool game and a complete bracket.

* Pool #1, Sat, 3:30pm, vs. Texas Fire
In our only pool game, we managed to get off to a good start. After a scoreless first, we pushed across a run in the 2nd on a walk by Courtney who was driven in on a big double to right center by Keely. Things broke loose in the 3rd on walks to Shelby, J.T., and Courtney. Add to that singles by Rachel, Holly, and Tabatha and then the big triple by Keely and it added up to a 6-run inning. Alexis pitched 3 strong innings giving up just two hits, striking out 2 and walking 1 for the shutout. Final score, 6-0.

* Bracket #1, Sat, 6:00pm, vs. Texas Showdown Blue
A great pitcher's duel here to start off the bracket. The only inning with any runs was the bottom of the 3rd for Showdown Blue as they put together a single and a double mixed in with an error for two runs. Keely shut them down for the other innings, but we could only manage 3 hits of their pitcher, so they won 2-0 and moved us to the loser's bracket and a long, tough schedule.

* Bracket #2, Sat, 9:45pm, vs. Texas Terror
A late start time due to the rain and some delays in previous games made it so the first pitch wasn't thrown until after 10pm. Nevertheless, we played a strong game. After 3 scoreless innings, we scratched across runs in the 4th and 5th. The 4th started off with Tiffany getting hit by a pitch, Courtney reaching on a fielder's choice, then ... who else ... Keely slamming a triple to drive in Courtney. In the 5th, it was a walk to Shelby, a ground out and a couple of wild pitches to get her across the plate. Shelby pitched 5 strong innings, giving up just 4 hits and striking 5 and not allowing any runs. Final score, 2-0.

* Bracket #3, Sun, 8:00am, vs. High Voltage
Facing 6 games in 7 time slots and showing up at 6:45am after getting home after midnight, the girls started off surprisingly strong in what was the best game of the tournament for us. We jumped out early with 3 runs in the first as Shelby walked and Tabatha reached on an error. After another triple from Keely and a double from Courtney, we were up 3-0. In the 2nd, we added 2 more with a single up the middle from Alexis followed by Rachel moving her to 2nd on a ground out. It was Shelby's turn for a triple to drive in Alexis while Tabatha singled in Shelby. One more was added in the 5th on a double from Courtney and Tiffany driving her in with a single. Meanwhile, Keely was "nails" on the mound with 5 more strong innings, scattering 4 hits and striking out 4, walking none. Final score, 6-0

* Bracket #4, Sun, 11:00am, vs. '92 Texas Peppers
As good as the last game was, this game was that bad. The Peppers were given 5 runs in the 1st on just one hit. 4 walks, 2 steals, and 2 errors did the rest. They tacked on 3 more runs in subsequent innings. We put together 2 runs in the 3rd on a long triple to center by Leslie who scored on a wild pitch. Tabatha walked then stole 2nd and 3rd and came home. One more in the 4th as Alexis, Holly, and Rachel lead off with walks to load the bases which seemed to start a comeback. But a strikeout and a line drive to 3rd that doubled-off the runner ended the game and we were done. Final score, 8-3.

Game recaps:
Pool 1: Trouble 7, Texas Fire 0
Bracket 1: Showdown Blue 2, Trouble 0
Bracket 2: Trouble 2, Texas Terror 0
Bracket 3: Trouble 6, High Voltage 0
Bracket 4: '92 Texas Peppers 8, Trouble 3

(unofficial) Tournament Rankings (W-L):
1st - Elgin Express (4-0 or 5-1)
2nd - Texas Fire (4-2)
3rd - Texas Showdown Orange (3-2)
4th - '92 Texas Pepeprs (2-2)
5th - Texas Trouble (2-2)
5th - Texas Showdown Blue (2-2)
7th - South Texas Dream Team (1-2)
7th - High Voltage (0-2)
9th - Texas Terror (0-2)

TROUBLE GOES UNDEFEATED AT DEER PARK USFA QUALIFIER

On a beautiful Apr 8-9 weekend, Trouble went undefeated at Deer Park.

* Pool #1, Sat, 11:00am, vs. Mid Country Madness
Shelby pitched the first game and, after a bit of a wobbly start, settled down to earn a 10-4 victory. We pushed across 6 in the first and 4 in the 2nd as the whole lineup contributed one way or another with 6 hits, 4 walks, and 9 steals.

* Pool #2, Sat, 12:20pm, vs. Gulf Coast Breakers
Alexis went to the mound in the second pool game and made it easy on our offense as she tossed a no-hitter. We overcame 3 errors in the 2nd, but when you're not giving up any hits, you've got a good chance. The offense was "on" again, as we got 3 in the 1st and 6 in the 2nd. This time, it was 6 hits, 2 walks, 4 steals mixed in with a few errors and wild pitches. Final score, 9-0.

* Bracket #1, Sat, 4:00pm, vs. Gulf Coast Breakers
This game started looking a little scary as we faced the team we had just beaten 9-0 and started off on the wrong foot by not putting together much offense in the first 2 innings while the Breakers jumped out to leads of 2-0 and 5-1. With time running out, we had our last at-bats coming up and, boy, did the girls deliver. Alexis and Shelby started us off with walks, then, J.T. (who had just arrived from her school's tournament) stepped up with a big triple to make it 5-3. Tiffany walked and took second, then Courtney came up and grounded one to the gap in left center for a triple to tie the game at 5-5. Keely was next and delivered the "walk-off" single to win the game 6-5 (remember that name!!!!)

* Bracket #2, Sat, 7:00pm, vs. Texas Jets
It was Keely's turn on the mound and she turned in a strong performance over 4 innings, allowing just 4 hits and striking out 6. They managed a run in the first on a couple of hits, but that was all Keely would allow. Their pitchers ran into a little difficulty with the strike zone and, after adding a few hits, we came away with a big victory, 13-1.

* Bracket #3, Sun, 12:00pm, vs. Lethal Weapon
This game was a back-and-forth affair for the first 3 innings as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. We took the lead back in the 2nd, 3-2. They went ahead 4-3 after 3. We then exploded for 7 runs in the 4th highlighed by a J.T. home run to finish off the scoring and sending us to the championship game. Final score, 10-4.

* Championship Game, Sun, 2:40pm, vs. Lethal Weapon
Keely took the mound for the championship game and the two pitchers did not disappoint. It was a 0-0 pitcher's duel for 4 innings. Keely allowed just two singles and their pitcher had allowed just a bloop bunt single. As time ran out in the 5th inning, we knew we just had to score one run to win the game. After a strike out and a ground out, we were just one out away from going to ITB. But Tabatha worked the count well and drew a walk to bring up (remember??) ... Keely. You knew something was in the air when she came to bat and, sure enough, she drove one to deep right, coming ever so close to going over, giving enough time for Tabatha to come around from first to win the championship ... a walk-off triple!! Final score, 1-0.

Game recaps:
Pool 1: Trouble 10, Mid County Madness 4
Pool 2: Trouble 9, Gulf Coast Breakers 0
Bracket 1: Trouble 6, Gulf coast Breakers 5
Bracket 2: Trouble 13, Texas Jets 1
Bracket 3: Trouble 10, Lethal Weapon 4

TROUBLE TAKES 2ND AT TEXAS ACES SHAMROCK CLASSIC

After a six-week layoff due to high school softball, we were finally able to get nearly everyone together to play and, for the first time since December, we were able to complete the tournament without getting rained out.

It was a long, hard-fought weekend and we managed a 2nd place finish at Imperial Park in Sugar Land on March 18-19.

* Pool #1, Sat, 9:00am, vs. Texas Wildfire
J.T. started us off on the mound with a no-hitter. They managed a run in the first on a walk, sacrifice bunt, ground out, and wild pitch. Our bats started off hot with 3 in the first and 5 in the second on 10 hits highlighted by two triples by Shelby. Final score, we win 8-1.

* Pool #2, Sat, 10:15am, vs. Texas Cobras
Alexis followed up with a 4-hit performance that limited them to 2 runs. We responded with 3 in the 1st and 2 in the 3rd. The first inning had extra-base hits from Holly, Tiffany, and Courtney. The 3rd had leadoff singles by J.T. and Tiffany and an error to push 2 across. Final score, we win 5-2.

* Bracket #1, Sat, 1:00pm, vs. Texas Cobras
Luck of the bracket draw pitted us against our last pool game opponent. We were able to continue our timely hitting while Shelby was shutting them down on a 1-hitter. We got 3 in the first on a leadoff double by Shelby, an RBI single from J.T., an RBI triple from Tiffany who was able to score on a passed ball. We scratched across one more in the 4th on a leadoff walk to Tabatha, who stole second, moved to third on Leslie's single and scored on Rachel's groundout. Final score, we win 4-1.

* Bracket #2, Sat, 2:30pm, vs. Rock-N-Fire
This one appeared to be in the bag until our opponent mounted a late inning comeback that fortunately fell short (not the last we would see unfortunately). We jumped to a 5-0 lead by scoring 2 in the 2nd and 3 in the 3rd. Courtney ledd off the 2nd with a single and moved to 2nd on Tabatha's single. Wild pitches moved them both up until Rachel hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Courtney and move Tabatha to 3rd. Tabatha then scored on a wild pitch. The 3rd innning had J.T. reaching on an error and Tiffany uncorking a long triple to bring her home. Courtney followed up with up a double to score Tiffany and Tabatha doubled Courtney home to end our scoring attack. J.T. was cruising along thru 3 innings when they mounted their comeback in the 4th. J.T. only allowed a walk and a double, but four errors helped out our opponent and they ended up scoring 3 but a ground out to third ended the inning and the game, leaving us with a 5-3 victory.

* Bracket #3, Sat, 4:00pm, vs. Mystixx
A real back-and-forth game was marred by a number of defensive lapses allowing 5 of their 6 runs to be unearned. Alexis pitched a great game giving up 5 hits and striking out 3 and giving up no earned runs. We picked up one run in the second when Courtney led off with a triple and scored on Tabatha's ground out. After being down 5-1 after 3 innings, we put together a 4-run comeback. Tabatha and Alexis started off the 4th with singles and Rachel followed with a double to bring home Tabatha. Shelby hit a clutch, 2-run single and ended up on third when the dust settled on the play. Holly drove in Shelby with a single to close out the scoring in the 4th. This evened the game at 5-5 and put us into ITB. We couldn't score in our half of the fifth and they led off the bottom of the sixth with a single to center scoring the ITB runner to end the game. It was onto the loser's bracket after a 6-5 loss.

* Bracket #4, Sat, 7:00pm, vs. Humble Cobras
In our sixth game of the day, J.T. came on in relief of Shelby and pitched three strong innings giving up just one run on two hits. Our big 5-run 2nd inning proved enough as Tabatha reached first on a hit-by-pitch. Despite a nasty-looking, swollen left hand she remained in the game to steal second and move to third on a single from Alexis. Rachel had a big 2-RBI single to bring home Tabatha and Alexis and ended up on third after the play. Leslie laid down a great bunt to bring home Rachel and reaching first. She stole second, and, after walks to Shelby and J.T., we had the bases loaded. Tiffany broke thru with a 2-run single to end the scoring. Not quitting, our opponent started a late rally in the 4th on a couple of walks and a couple of singles, but managed only one run as J.T. struck out the last two batters to win the game, 5-3.

* Bracket #5, Sun, 9:00am, vs. Rock-N-Fire
We met Rock-N-Fire again on Sunday morning, but this game was nip-and-tuck the whole way. We jumped to a 1-0 in the 1st when Shelby doubled, moved to third on Holly's ground out and scored on an error. They answered with 2 in the bottom of the first, courtesy of some walks and a well-placed 2-RBI single. In the third, we added two more on a single by Shelby who went all the way to third on Holly's groundout. J.T. drove in Shelby with a single and Courtney hit a triple to score J.T. They answered with one in the bottom half of the third on two hits off of Keely, who had come on in relief of Shelby. That was all they would get off Keely as we tacked on 2 more in the 4th courtesy of a walk and four errors. Keely shut them down in the bottom half to seal the victory at 5-3.

* Bracket #6, Sun, 12:00pm, vs. Attack
They jumped out early with 2 runs in the first off of Alexis with several hits. We came back strong with 4 in the 2nd and 4 in the 3rd. Tabatha led off the 5-hit attack in the 3rd that also had singles from Keely, Alexis, J.T., and Tiffany in addition to Leslie reaching on a fielder's choice, a sacrifice fly from Shelby and an RBI sacrifice bunt from Holly. 6 more hits in the third from Tabatha, Leslie, Shelby, Holly, J.T., and Tiffany, plus a walk from Alexis accounted for the 4 runs in the third. Little did we know that we would need nearly all of those runs to secure the victory. The top of the 4th saw Attack bring across 4 runs after the first 2 batters made outs. A double, two singles, two errors, and two wild pitches brought on Keely to put out the fire. Despite them getting two walks and a hit batter, Keely shut the door with a bases loaded strike out to end it all, leaving us with a an 8-6 victory and a spot in the championship game.

* Bracket #7, Championship game, Sun, 1:30pm, vs. Mystixx
In our 9th game of the weekend, our bats finally succumbed to fatigue or to the great pitching of the Mystixx pitcher. Whichever the case, we could only manage three walks and having our strong bats shut out in a no-hitter. We had our "one bad inning" on defense in this game as well as them putting together 4 runs on one hit in the 2nd. Two walks and three errors completed their 4-run inning which proved to be the difference as we ended up with a 4-0 loss and a 2nd place finish.

TROUBLE FINISHES FIFTH IN RAIN-SHORTENED STING IN THE NEW YEAR TOURNAMENT

Despite a month-long drought, for the second week in a row, rain shortened our tournament. This one ended up being a single-elimination bracket where one loss knocks you out. Unfortunately, we stumbled early, but still played a good, hard game against a good team.

* Pool #1, Sat, 11:30am, vs. Texas Peppers/Tanel
J.T. went to the mound, and despite facing the strong bats of the Peppers, held them to no runs on 4 hits. Three times we were able to push across two runs. In the first, Shelby singled, stole second, was wild pitched to third and scored on Tiffany's single. Tiffany was driven in when Courtney came ever-so-close to hitting one out. In the third, Shelby led off with a double and Holly moved her to third on a single. A wild pitch and ground out brought both of them home. In the fourth, Leslie led off with a single and Rachel drove one to the fence in right-center for a triple and scored on an error. Final score, Trouble 6, Peppers/Tanel 0.

* Pool #2, Sat, 12:40pm, vs. Texas TNT
The bats were working well as 9 runs came home in the first two innings. Shelby, Holly, J.T., Tiffany scored 8 of those runs, while RBI's were contributed by Holly, J.T, Tiffany, Keely, and Shelby (2). Alexis fired a no-hitter, facing the minimum number of batters over three innings. The only runner being a walk that was promptly thrown out stealing from Holly to Shelby. Final score, Trouble 9, TNT 0.

* Bracket #1, Sun, 1:00pm, vs. Elgin Express
This was essentially our championship game as Elgin Express eventually went on to win the tournament. It was a Shelby vs. Shelby pitching match-up and they didn't disappoint. The first four innings went scoreless, with "their" Shelby giving up just one hit, and "our" Shelby giving up just two hits (a lost-in-the-sun infield blooper and a single to left). "Our" Shelby fanned 11 (the first 6 in a row!). We scratched across a run in the fifth when J.T. led off with a double to the center field fence. Tiffany moved her to third on a single and stole second. Courtney then delivered a sacrifice fly to score J.T. and a good defensive play by the Express caught Tiffany going to third. In the bottom of the sixth they turned an error and a walk into runners on 1st and 2nd and nobody out. After a pop up to J.T. at first, their clean-up batter did just that by ripping a double to right-center scoring both runners and winning the game. Express 2, Trouble 1.

TROUBLE TAKES FIRST AT ANNUAL ALL-AMERICAN WINTER CLASSIC IN 16U !!!

To start off the 2006 Summer season, Texas Trouble travelled to El Franco Lee Park to play up in the 16U bracket of the Annual All-American Winter Classic USSSA Qualifier. In just our second 16u tournament, we went undefeated thru the bracket to take 1st place despite the weather. Here's the details:

* Pool #1, Sat, 8:00am, vs. Cy-Fair Battz
This was the start of a couple of disappointing, but well-fought pool games. The Battz jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first on a double, sacrifice bunt, and sacrifice fly. We responded in the bottom of the 2nd when Courtney led off with a triple to the gap in right center and scored on a Keely single. Our rust showed (from not playing in six weeks) when we gave them 2 in the top of the third on an infield single, an error, and a sacrifice fly. We mounted a comeback in the bottom of the third when Lori walked and went around to 2nd as the ball got by the catcher. She stole third and, after Shelby walked, Lori stole home as they tried to throw out Shelby stealing second. But that's as far as it went and we went down 3-2. Alexis pitched a strong game giving up just two hits in three innings of work.

* Pool #2, Sat, 12:40pm, vs. College Station Tigers
J.T. pitched and held them down into the third inning, but they had some strong bats and were able to put together some hits combined with three errors to get a 5-1 win. We pushed across our run in the 4th on a single by Shelby, a steal of second, then J.T. doubled in Shelby.

* Bracket #1, Sat, 6:00pm, vs. Texas Eclipse
Shelby started this game and, while the strong-hitting Eclipse team managed to get a few lead-off batters on base, Shelby hung tough and shut them out for 5 innings with a little help from 7 strikeouts and just 3 hits. Our lone run came when Tiffany walked, stole second, moved to third on a groundout by Courtney, then Leslie came thru with a clutch single. The game ended on an exciting note. With runners on second and third and one out, there was a fly ball to right that Leslie caught and threw out the runner from third that had left early to seal the victory on a double play. Trouble wins 1-0.

* Bracket #2, Sat, 9:00pm, vs. College Station Tigers
Now it was Keely's turn in the circle against the good hitters of the Tigers. Keely held them scoreless into the fifth when they scratched across two runs on a walk, an error, a fielder's choice, a groundout, and a single. We had gotten two in the bottom of the fourth on a walk to J.T., a screaming triple from Tiffany and an error. Tied 2-2 going into the bottom of the fifth, Keely led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Leslie singled Keely over to third and got to second. A passed ball plated Keely and, after Alexis came thru with a bunt single, Rachel was up when time expired. Trouble wins 3-2.

* Bracket #3, Sun, 12:30pm, vs. South Texas Sting
With a 100% chance of rain on Sunday, we managed to get in the winner's bracket final before the skies opened up. Shelby returned to the mound and came thru with a no-hitter, but there were still some tense moments toward the end. We jumped out to 2-0 lead in the first when Shelby reached on an error, stole second and scored on a J.T. double. J.T. was driven in on a single from Tiffany. They scratched a run across in the second on two errors. We kept plugging away and got another run in the second on a triple from Rachel and a passed ball. We got another in the third when Keely led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a ground out by Tabatha and scored when Alexis reached on an error. Up 4-1 in the sixth, the rains finally arrived. Having to throw a wet ball, Shelby walked the leadoff hitter and the next batter reached on an error. A couple of wild pitches during the next two batters (who flied to center and popped to the catcher) and it was 4-3 and still raining. The umps, while trying to get the game finished, finally had to suspend the game with one out to go. The rain slowed a bit and the girls took the field again in light rain and Shelby faced her final batter. The rains got heavier during the at-bat, but Shelby somehow managed to get the ball in the strike zone despite all of that to strike out the last batter, giving us the championship!! Final score, Trouble 4, Sting 3.
