Saturday, April 3, 2010. The Texas Mavericks come away victorious in an opening day rematch versus the Rio Grande Valley Bandits. Early league MVP candidate, Matt Jones, provided a gutsy individual performance, but the one man show wasn’t enough to bring the Bandits back from a 14-0 first quarter deficit.
FS Johnathan Batson quarterbacked the Mavericks offense for the third straight game, breaking yet another team record. His week four performance, versus the Bulldogs included the single game Mavericks rushing record of 130 yards on 16 carries. This week’s performance, 12 of 16 passing, 176 yards, 3 passing TDs, and no INT, produced a 150.0 QB Passer Rating. A new Mavericks single game record. RB James Tibbs’ return to the line-up also provided another Mavericks team record. His 74 yard TD run for the second score of the game, led the way for 117 yards on 7 carries, besting the 73 yard mark set in the 2009 season opener by James McGarity. WR Jerry Clouse posted his second 2-TD game of the season and K Max Rodriquez had a big day going 5 of 6 (1-blocked) extra point attempts and hitting on a 25 yard field goal. The Mavericks offense produced a new team record for points scored in this 44-0 route of the Bandits.
Defensively, the Mavericks produced 5 Sacks and 2 INT. DB Alvin Thomas led the way with 7 Tackles and 1 pass deflection, followed by MLB Vince Johnson’s 5 Tackles and 1 Sack. DE Jade Perez led the sack happy defense with 1.5 sacks, while McGarity brothers, Jason and Jarred, both had INT. SS Devan Hemphill had 3 Pass Deflections and it all added up to the Defenses first shut-out of the season. Hemphill also had an incredible 80 yard return on a quick kick that was called back by a holding call.
Next week “Your San Antonio Home Team”, Texas Mavericks (3-2) will go on to Edinburg, TX for a very important rematch versus the Landsharks (4-1). The Mavericks suffered their first loss of the season to the hands of the Landsharks in week two, 27-6. Mavs need to even up the head-to-head if they want to have a shot at the play offs.
